In un punto particolarmente panoramico del fiume Aura,  non lontano da Turku e quindi nella Finlandia del sud,  ma continentale,  abbiamo visto dei vispi Germani reali in un giorno di pieno inverno,  con parecchia neve e -9 gradi C.

Cio’ significa che anche loro talvolta decidono di rimanere in Finlandia,  di non migrare,  convinti che troveranno cibo nei punti dei fiumi/laghi che non gelano.DSCN9891DSCN9892DSCN9895DSCN9894Ne abbiamo visti anche sotto i pontili della bella Naantali,  e qui siamo sul mare.DSCN8858XX (1)DSCN8858XX (2)

Brave Mallards.

In a particularly panoramic place along the Aura river,  not far from Turku and therefore in southern but continental Finland,  we saw some lively Mallards on a winter day with a lot of snow and -9 degrees C.

This means that some of them sometimes decide to stay in Finland,  not to migrate,  believing that they will find food in those special spots where rivers/lakes do not freeze. 

We found some Mallards under the boardwalks of pretty Naantali too,  along the sea bank.

  2. We have a large resident flock of mallards that stay all year, too. Our temperatures throughout the winter are usually above 0C although last month we had a terrible cold snap that lasted about 5 days (lows of -20C). The ducks were provided with some grain to get them through though.
