Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Gennaio ha avuto assolutamente due facce in Finlandia:  le prime settimane sono state ricche di precipitazioni nevose e soprattutto di gelide ondate da nord:  abbiamo sfiorato i -30 gradi C in molte parti del Paese;  dalla terza settimana in poi invece,  aria calda e’ iniziata ad arrivare da sud e il termometro e’ schizzato sopra lo zero:  fino a +2/+4.  La quantita’ di neve al suolo era notevole:  fino a 70cm in Lapponia e da noi fino a 40,  ma ora in parte si sta sciogliendo.  Ovviamente la neve presente sugli alberi e’ stata la prima a sciogliersi o a cadere al suolo,  togliendo attrattiva al paesaggio,  che prima era davvero una winter wonderland.

In Italia e’ successo piu’ o meno lo stesso:  dopo un inizio mese freddino (a Verona siamo andati sottozero diverse notti),  e’ arrivato il vento tiepido a cambiare tutto.  Per fortuna il Calycanthus nel mio giardino e’ felicemente fiorito,  come tutti gli anni.  Lo potete vedere QUI.

Comunque noi non ci siamo fatti sorprendere:  abbiamo approfittato del tempo mite in Italia per fare un po’ di bicicletta e della neve in Finlandia per sciare:  i miei sport preferiti.

In Italia sono anche riuscita a fotografare qualche uccellino migratore che trascorreva la brutta stagione li’;  ora si tratta di identificarlo…libri alla mano.

In Finlandia invece abbiamo avuto la visita dello sparviero piu’ volte,  soprattutto nelle giornate piu’ fredde.  Mio marito lo ha anche salvato dalla collisione col vetro della nostra finestra…ma ve ne parlero’ piu’ avanti.  Ho trovato altre foto della lince nella fototrappola,  ma stavolta solo notturne.

Le giornate si sono notevolmente allungate e finalmente i poveri uccellini che si nutrono alle nostre mangiatoie hanno piu’ tempo per mangiare – tenete presente che loro vanno a dormire appena fa buio – e con queste temperature hanno proprio bisogno di mangiare!

Come sapete io non seguo gli sport in tv,  (per me e’ tempo sprecato),  ma non ho potuto fare a meno di sentire e leggere sui quotidiani le notizie sportive riguardanti il tennis italiano:  l’Italia ha vinto la coppa Davis a novembre 2023,  dopo un’infinita’ di anni dall’ultima volta e la settimana scorsa un tennista italiano ha vinto gli Australian Open per la prima volta in assoluto.  Due notizie assolutamente sorprendenti.

Le notizie del mese sono due,  in Finlandia:  l’elezione del capo dello stato,  che viene eletto dal popolo tutto ogni sei anni e lo sciopero generale di due giorni contro le nuove misure del governo.  Riguardo alla prima notizia,  si andra’ al ballottaggio fra due candidati arrivati abbastanza vicini,  come preferenze;  uno proviene dal partito conservatore,  e’ stato anche primo ministro e poi ha insegnato per vari anni in una scuola di politica internazionale a Firenze.  Si chiama Alexander Stubb,  proviene dall’area di lingua svedese della Finlandia ed e’ molto addentro alle politiche europee.  L’altro si chiama Pekka Haavisto,  viene dal partito dei Verdi,  e’ in politica da molti anni ed e’ stato ministro degli esteri nel governo Marin,  seguendo il processo di adesione della Finlandia alla NATO.  La curiosita’ che li accomuna e’ che entrambi hanno il coniuge/compagno straniero,  non finlandese di nascita.

Riguardo invece allo sciopero generale,  cui partecipano proprio tutte le categorie sociali e perfino molti negozi e supermercati saranno chiusi,  le motivazioni sono che il governo di destra eletto l’anno scorso,  ha proposto drastici tagli alla spesa pubblica.  Un esempio su tutti:  i lavoratori che mancano dal lavoro per malattia per un giorno non saranno pagati.  Queste cose sono assolutamente nuove in Finlandia:  qui sono abituati allo stato sociale.  Una contraddizione aver eletto un governo di destra,  ma d’altra parte questo e’ anche frutto dell’astensionismo,  come e’ successo in Italia.

In Italia invece abbiamo aperto l’anno con tanti fatti di cronaca nera.  Fra i piu’ dolorosi ci sono sempre i femminicidi.  Fra l’altro e’ un problema anche gestire le conseguenze del femminicidio nelle famiglie.  Ad esempio le vite dei bambini che vengono sottoposti a questo trauma:  in Italia ci sono al momento circa duemila bambini,  figli di femminicidio e l’attuale governo ha stanziato quest’anno solo 60mila euro destinati alle cure psicologiche per questi bambini.  (Fonte:  RaiRadiodue).

Un’altra notizia che mi ha toccato il cuore,  e’ stata la morte del marito appena quarantenne di un’amica che frequenta con me il corso di lingua finlandese.  Era una persona sana e se n’e’ andato in un mese,  a causa di una brutta influenza.  Certo,  anche nei piu’ giovani i malanni di stagione possono provocare gravi conseguenze o addirittura essere fatali.  Voglio mandare alla cara D. un grande abbraccio!

A Month in my Photos.

January absolutely had two faces in Finland:  the first weeks brought heavy snowfalls and above all cold snaps from the north:  we touched -30 degrees C in many parts of the country;  from the third week onwards however,  warm air began to arrive from the south and the thermometer jumped above zero:  up to +2/+4.  The amount of snow on the ground was notable:  up to 70cm in Lapland and up to 40cm in our area,  but now part of it is melting.  Obviously the snow on the trees was the first to melt or fall to the ground,  spoiling the landscape attractiveness,  which earlier was truly a winter wonderland.

More or less the same thing happened in Italy:  after a cold start to the month (in Verona we went below zero several nights),  the warm wind arrived to change everything.  Luckily the Calycanthus in my garden happily bloomed,  like every year.  You can see it HERE.

However,  we weren’t surprised:  we took advantage of the mild weather in Italy to do some cycling and the snow in Finland to ski:  my favorite sports.

In Italy I also managed to photograph some migratory birds that were spending the bad season there;  now the question is to identify them…books at hand.

In Finland we had the visit of the sparrowhawk several times,  especially on the coldest days.  My husband even saved him after a collision with our window panes… I’ll tell you more about that later.  I found more photos of the lynx in the camera trap,  but just night shots.

The days have gotten considerably longer and finally the poor birds that feed at our feeders have longer time to eat – keep in mind that they go to sleep as soon as it gets dark – and in these temperatures they really need to eat!

As you know,  I don’t follow sports on TV (to me it is wasted time),  but I couldn’t help but hear and read the sports news regarding Italian tennis in the newspapers:  Italy won the Davis Cup in November 2023,  after an infinite number of years since the previous time and last week an Italian tennis player won the Australian Open for the first time ever.  Two absolutely surprising news.

There are two important news this month in Finland:  the election of the new President of the Republic,  who is elected by the people every six years and the two-day general strike against the government’s new measures.  Regarding the first news,  there will be a run-off between two candidates who have arrived quite close,  in terms of preferences;  one comes from the conservative party,  he was also prime minister and then taught for several years at a school of international politics in Florence.  His name is Alexander Stubb, he comes from the Swedish-speaking area of Finland and is very familiar with European politics.  The other is called Pekka Haavisto,  he comes from the Green party,  has been in politics for many years and was foreign minister in the Marin government,  and took care of Finland’s accession process to NATO.  The fun fact that unites them is that they both have foreign spouses/partners who are not Finnish by birth.

All social categories will participate in the proclaimed general strike and even shops and supermarkets will be closed.  The reasons for it are the drastic cuts in public spending proposed by the right-hand government elected last year.  One example above all:  workers who miss work due to illness for one day will not be paid.  These things are absolutely new in Finland:  the Finns are used to the welfare state.  It is a contradiction to have elected a right-wing government,  but on the other hand this is also the result of abstentionism, as well as happened in Italy.

In Italy we opened the year with many crime news.  Among the most painful are always femicides.  Among other things,  managing the consequences of femicide in families is an important issue.  For example,  the lives of children who are subjected to this trauma:  in Italy there are currently around two thousand children in this situation and the current government has allocated only 60 thousand euros this year for psychological care for these children. Another piece of news that touched my heart was the death of the husband of a friend who attends the Finnish language course with me.  He was a healthy person in his early forties and passed away in a month,  due to a bad flu.  Of course,  seasonal ailments can cause serious consequences even in the youngest or even be fatal.  I want to send dear D. a big hug!
