San Nicola nacque in Turchia,  allora sotto l’Impero romano,  nel II secolo d.C. ma attorno all’anno mille un gruppo di marinai baresi trafugo’ i resti del santo e le trasportarono a Bari.   Di li’ in poi il culto del santo si diffuse rapidamente e gli vennero attribuiti grandi miracoli,  in particolare riguardanti salvataggi in mare. Oggi San Nicola e’ il santo piu’ invocato nei Paesi balcanici,  fino alla Russia,  di cui e’ patrono.

Proprio San Nicola,  venerato come elargitore di doni,  ha originato la leggenda di Babbo Natale.  Le ragioni sono molteplici.  Nicola nacque da una famiglia benestante e cristiana:  alla morte dei genitori si dice abbia dato tutti i propri beni ai poveri,  per abbracciare il sacerdozio;  la sua morte si data il giorno 6 dicembre,  gia’ in periodo natalizio;  nell’iconografia piu’ antica,  San Nicola vescovo indossa il mantello rosso.

Da qui,  fra storia e leggenda,  prende forma il generoso barbuto dispensatore di doni entrato poi nell’immaginario mondiale.

St. Nicholas was born in Turkey,  then part of the Roman Empire,  in the year 270 AD presumably,  but around the year 1000 AD a group of sailors from Bari stole the remains of the Saint and transported them to Bari.  Since then the cult of the saint spread rapidly and important miracles were attributed to him,  in particular concerning rescues at sea.  Today St. Nicholas is the most celebrated saint in the Balkan countries, up to Russia,  of which he is the patron saint.

From the historical St. Nicholas,  venerated as a gift-giver,  originated the legend of Santa Claus.  The reasons are manifold.  Nicholas was born into a wealthy and Christian family:  on the death of his parents he is said to have given all his possessions to the poor in order to become a priest;  his death took place on December 6th,  already in the Christmas period;  in the most ancient iconography,  St. Nicholas as a  bishop wears the red cloak.

From these details,  between history and legend,  the generous bearded gift-deliverer took shape and then entered the world imagination.
