Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Aprile e’ stato un mese molto piu’ freddo e nevoso della media.  Un vero record.  Solitamente qui nel sud Finlandia il massimo accumulo di neve si ha la prima meta’ di Marzo e poi inizia il lento scioglimento,  mentre il sole si fa via via piu’ potente e le precipitazioni sono solo di pioggia.  Quest’anno invece e’ continuato a nevicare per tutta la prima meta’ del mese,  fino a Pasqua,  e dato l’enorme accumulo dei mesi precedenti,  ci ritroviamo adesso con ancora qualche mucchio di neve in giardino.

Naturalmente non e’ cosi’ dappertutto:  nell’estremo sud e nelle zone costiere la neve e’ molta meno,  ma restera’ il ricordo di un anno straordinario.

Nella seconda meta’ del mese invece la situazione si e’ ribaltata totalmente:  sole e fino a 15 gradi pomeridiani hanno fatto si’ che iniziassimo a sentire la primavera!

In Italia abbiamo avuto giorni di freddo e pioggia ad inizio mese,  tanto che il Monte Baldo si era imbiancato consistentemente.

Anche in Finlandia si fanno le pulizie di primavera,  che in Italia chiamiamo “di Pasqua”.  Certo i riscaldamenti sono ancora accesi e si possono fare solo determinate attivita’;  per esempio il lavaggio vetri non e’ sempre possibile…spesso per posizionare la scaletta alle finestre occorre attendere che la neve caduta dal tetto ed accumulata sotto le finestre si sciolga.  😉

Le giornate sono gia’ lunghissime.  Alle 22.00 ci si vede ancora,  nonostante il sole sia gia’ tramontato.

La guerra in Ucraina preoccupa non poco,  tanto che i finlandesi stanno pensando di aderire alla Nato infrangendo la loro neutralita’ lunga 70 anni.  Sia ben chiaro:  i finlandesi sono un popolo gentile,  civile e niente affatto guerrafondaio,  ma se entrano nella Nato e’ perche’ cercano aiuto e sicurezza di fronte alla minaccia russa.  Fino a poco tempo fa la Russia non costituiva una minaccia e ci sono sempre stati buoni rapporti diplomatici con questo vicino ingombrante,  ma dal 24 febbraio purtroppo tutto e’ cambiato.  Faccio mie le parole di Paolo Mieli:  a chi devono rivolgersi i finlandesi in cerca di sicurezza?  Certo,  la Nato non e’ il paradiso e non si puo’ mai dire come andranno le cose anche in America.  L’unica via percorribile sarebbe una difesa Europea,  ma purtroppo questa e’ ancora lontana.

Per quanto riguarda le minacce del Cremlino a Svezia e Finlandia se osano aderire alla Nato,  va detto che la Finlandia ha un esercito moderno,  ben equipaggiato e perfino i riservisti sono ciclicamente richiamati e riaddestrati;  la Svezia una aviazione militare fra le piu’ brillanti al mondo.  Per gli svedesi si tratterebbe di un passo storico:  sono neutrali sin dalle guerre Napoleoniche.

Un discorso a parte merita lo stile di vita diametralmente opposto di Finlandia e Russia:  qui siamo in un Paese libero e democratico,  nel Paese delle liberta’ personali garantite dalla Costituzione,  il Paese dove la comunita’ LGBTQ vive tranquillamente,  dove i sacerdoti si sposano,  divorziano e cambiano sesso,  dove le liberta’ di pensiero e di stampa sono sacre;  qui il senso di comunita’ e di uguaglianza e’ proverbiale e non abbiamo magnati che sciupano le risorse statali per il proprio tornaconto e nemmeno mafiosi.  Il gap fra ricchi e poveri non e’ certo ai livelli degli stati totalitari.  L’evasione fiscale e’ pressoche’ inesistente e tutti seguono le regole del buonsenso e del vivere civile.

Ecco che cos’e’ la Finlandia:  uno stato progredito,  coi piedi ben piantati nei valori dell’Europa piu’ moderna.

Il giorno 8 aprile,  quando il presidente ucraino ha parlato in videoconferenza al parlamento finlandese,  come aveva fatto in altri consessi europei,  la Russia ha sforato lo spazio aereo finlandese.  Se non fosse tragico,  questo atteggiamento sarebbe perfino ridicolo o fanciullesco!

La situazione covid va piu’ o meno come in Italia:  il virus circola eccome,  nessuno dice che non ci sia piu’,  anche se il governo ha tolto tutte le restrizioni,  incluse le mascherine al chiuso,  forte del fatto che la quasi totalita’ della popolazione e’ vaccinata.  Anche qui comunque la pandemia non e’ piu’ fra le prime notizie dei tg,  anche se la raccomandazione ad essere prudenti vale sempre.  Le infezioni sono piu’ diffuse fra la popolazione scolastica,  in questo momento.

A Month in my Photos.

April was a much colder and snowier month than average.  A true record.  Usually here in South Finland we have the maximum amount of snow in the first half of March and then it begins to melt away,  while the sun becomes more and more powerful and the precipitations are only rain.  This year,  on the contrary,  it kept snowing throughout the first half of the month,  until Easter,  and given the enormous accumulation of the previous months,  we now find ourselves with still some snow piles in the garden.

Of course this is not the case everywhere:  in the far south and in the coastal areas there is much less snow,  but the memory of an extraordinary year will remain. 

In the second half of the month,  however,  the situation was completely reversed:  sunshine and up to 15 degrees C in the afternoon meant that we began to feel spring!

In Italy we had days of cold and rain at the beginning of the month,  so much so that Monte Baldo got a white cap.

Also in Finland we do the spring cleaning,  which in Italy we call “Easter cleaning”.  Of course the heaters are still on and only certain activities can be done;  for example,  glass washing is not always possible:  in order to position the ladder at the windows it is necessary to wait for the snow that has fallen from the roof and accumulated under the windows to melt. 😉

The days are already very long.  At 10.00 p.m. we can see clearly outside, despite the fact that the sun has already set.

The war in Ukraine is of great concern,  so much so that the Finns are thinking of joining NATO by breaking their 70-year neutrality.  Let me be clear:  Finns are a kind,  civilized people and not at all warmongers,  but if they join NATO it is because they seek help and security in the face of the Russian threat.  Russia has not been a threat and there have always been good diplomatic relations with this cumbersome neighbor so far,  but unfortunately everything has changed since 24th February.  On the other hand,  who should the Finns in search of security turn to?  Of course NATO is not heaven and you can never say how things will go in the U.S. too.  The only way would be a shared European border defense,  but unfortunately this is still a long way off.

As for the Kremlin’s threats to Sweden and Finland if they dare to join NATO,  it must be said that Finland has a modern,  well-equipped army and even reservists are recalled and retrained every once in a while and Sweden has one of the most brilliant military aviation in the world.  For the Swedes it would be a major step:  they have been neutral since the Napoleonic wars.

You must also be aware of the opposite lifestyle of Finland and Russia:  here we are in a free and democratic country,  in a country of personal freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution,  a country where the LGBTQ community lives peacefully,  where priests can get married,  divorce and be transex,  where freedom of thought and press are sacred;  here the sense of community and equality is a value and we do not have tycoons who waste state resources for their own gain and not even mafia members.  The gap between rich and poor is certainly not at the level of totalitarian states.  Tax evasion is almost non-existent and everyone follows the rules of common sense and polite society.

The flags in my above shot will tell you what Finland is:  a developed state,  with its feet firmly in the values of modern Europe.

On April 8,  when the Ukrainian president spoke by videoconference to the Finnish parliament,  as he had done in other European states,  Russia breached the Finnish airspace.  If it weren’t tragic,  this attitude would even be ridiculous or childish!

The covid situation is more or less the same as in Italy:  the virus is still circulating,  no one says it is gone,  even if the government has uplifted all restrictions,  including masks when indoor,  thanks to the fact that almost all of the population is vaccinated.  Even here,  however,  the pandemic is no longer among the headline news,  even if the recommendation to be cautious is always valid.  Infections are more prevalent in the school population at this time.
