Percorrendo le strade secondarie in Italia si possono notare costruzioni come questa,  simili a piccoli santuari,  dedicati a figure della religione cattolica.  Sono una tradizione vecchissima:  rappresentano un luogo in cui chi crede può sostare in preghiera.

“Ecco la porta del cielo” è la soave dedica alla Madonna dell’Incontro.

Questi capitelli sono spesso decorati con affreschi,  specie quelli più antichi,  e la gente vi può portare lumini o fiori come omaggio e decorazione.

In questo particolare capitello si ricorda anche San Isidoro l’agricoltore,  vissuto a Madrid nell’anno 1000;  contadino devoto,  lavoratore instancabile ed attento ai poveri.  Fu canonizzato nel 1622 ed è ricordato nella tradizione come vero modello di contadino cristiano.

A Shrine along the Way.        

 It is very common to see shrines like this along secondary roads in Italy.  It is a very old Catholic tradition:  they are just places where to stop for a prayer.  They are dedicated to main figures in the Catholic religion and often decorated with frescoes – especially the oldest ones.  People can carry flowers or lights as a homage or ornament.

This one in my shots is dedicated to the “Virgin of the Encounter”.  The dedication on top of the door says:  “Here is the Gateway to Heaven”,  one of the many names attributed to the Mother of Jesus. 

In this particular shrine,  however,  Saint Isidore the Farm Labourer is also remembered.   He lived in Madrid in the year 1000,  was a farm worker and a pious person;  he became saint in 1622 and in the Catholic tradition he is defined as the real model of pious farmer.

  1. In Austria we call these Marterl (from martyrdom). When I was young these shrines marked the crossroads. In the detailed cards for hiking there was a cross for each and you could find your way with the help of these (we have to turn left at the second Marterl). In times of GPS this is forgotten and I have seen Marterls moved from one place to another by the local communities so that they don’t mark the right way anymore.

  44. Sono toccanti queste cappelle; se ne trovano spesso nei paesi del Lago di Como, ramo di Lecco ed è un momento di piacevole sosta e di raccoglimento durante una passeggiata
