Gufetto di Natale.

Buongiorno cari lettori, oggi vi propongo un animale davvero raro che abbiamo visto poco prima dello scorso Natale per puro caso in un parco cittadino di Forssa, non lontano da Somero.

Si tratta di un gufo con caratteristiche davvero peculiari, che lo fanno rassomigliare ad un falco. Il nome inglese infatti e’ “Northern Hawk-owl” e dice tutto.

Il nome italiano e’ Ulula (Surnia ulula), ma in Italia questo uccello non vive, essendo stanziale delle latitudini piu’ nord del pianeta. In Finlandia lo troviamo nel centro-nord del Paese, dove rimane per tutto l’anno, con rare incursioni verso sud in cerca di cibo in inverno.

La sua fisicita’ e’ unica nella categoria gufi: e’ lungo fino a 40 cm, con un’apertura alare di 75 cm, con una coda eccezionalmente lunga e senza i tipici ciuffi di piume sulle orecchie. Inoltre, le righe scure ai lati della testa lo rendono facilmente identificabile, come anche le righe sulle piume pettorali, che ricordano quelle dello Sparviero.

Altra caratteristica pressoche’ unica di questo animale e’ il fatto che e’ attivo di giorno, contrariamente alle ben note abitudini dei gufi. Si nutre di roditori e piccoli uccellini.

Nelle mie foto lo potete vedere piuttosto bene: le ho opportunamente schiarite, poiche’ sono state scattate quando il cielo era ormai piuttosto buio. In particolare spero vi godiate quella in cui l’animale ha la testa ruotata di 180 gradi. 😉

In finnico si chiama: Hiiripöllö, cioe’: “il gufo dei topi”.

Christmas Owl.

Hello dear readers, today I will share with you a very rare animal that we saw just before last Christmas by pure chance in a city park in Forssa, not far from Somero.

It is an owl which resembles a hawk, due to very peculiar characteristics. The English name is in fact “Northern Hawk-owl” and it says it all.

The Italian name is Ulula (Sunia ulula), but this bird does not live in Italy at all, being sedentary in the northernmost latitudes of our planet. It nests in northern Finland and in and some parts of central Finland, where it remains for the whole year, with rare forays south in search of food in winter.

Its physical appearance is unique in the owl category: it is up to 40 cm long, with a wingspan of 75 cm, with an exceptionally long tail and without the typical tufts of feathers on the ears. In addition, its head is bordered with black edges, which make it easily identifiable and its breast is coloured with brown bands which remind the Sparrowhawk’s.

Another almost unique feature of this animal is that it is active during the day, unlike most owls do, as we know. It feeds on rodents and small birds.

In my photos you can see it quite well: I contrasted them appropriately, as they were taken when the sky was already quite dark. In particular, I hope you enjoy the one in which the animal has its head turned 180 degrees. 😉

In Finnish it is called: Hiiripöllö, that is: “the mouse owl”.
