Gufi di Lapponia.

Nel bioparco di Ranua,  non lontano da Rovaniemi,  abbiamo potuto deliziarci con la visione di animali selvatici piuttosto rari e difficili da avvistare,  senza lunghi appostamenti. 

Ad esempio questo esemplare di Gufo delle nevi  (Bubo scandiacus).   Il suo nome in Finlandese e’:  Tunturipöllö,  cioe’ letteralmente:  Gufo delle Montagne,  in quanto vive all’estremo nord della Finlandia,  in zone pietrose e sassose dove cresce poco piu’ che qualche ciuffo d’erba e le betulle sono bassi cespugli.  Nell’estremo nord della Finlandia,  proprio al confine con l’estremo nord della Norvegia,  il territorio presenta delle alture chiamate Tunturi. 

il Gufo delle nevi ha il piumaggio sempre bianco,  molto utile per scomparire nell’ambiente circostante;  si nutre di roditori,  talpe e piccoli uccelli.  E’ piuttosto grande:  fra 1,4 e 1,6 metri di apertura alare e come tutti gli appartenenti alla sua specie puo’ ruotare il collo di 270 gradi,  come vedete bene anche nelle mie foto.

Tutti i volatili del bioparco di Ranua sono stati raccolti feriti e sono qui per rimettersi,  quando possibile.  E’ una gioia poter ossevare un animale cosi’ bello,  anche se non libero in natura.

Owls of Lapland.

In the Ranua zoo,  not far from Rovaniemi,  we had the possibility to admire animals which are rarely to be seen in nature,  unless you travel to places or still hunt them.

For instance this gorgeous Snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus).  His name in Finnish is:  Tunturipöllö,  the Mountain owl,  because he lives in the very north of Finland in a stony territory where grass is just a few leaves anymore and birches are just small bushes.  Right there,  at the border with north Norway,  there are mountains called:  Tunturi.

The Snowy owl is a large white owl (between 1.4 and 1.6 metres wingspan),  who blends perfectly in the snowy landscape.  He feeds on rodents,  moles or small birds.  As you probably remember,  owls can rotate their head 270 degrees:  you can appreciate this feature in my shots too.

It was a real excitement to watch this rare critter at Ranua zoo.  All birds present in the zoo were found injured.  Some of them will be here all life as they will not be able to fly any longer.
