Tutta bianca.

DSCN6775Viaggiando nel nord Finlandia vi capitera’ di incontrare questo segnale stradale molte volte:  vi avverte che in questa zona del Paese ci sono allevamenti di renne,  le quali sono abituate a muoversi liberamente sul territorio per andare a cercare il cibo che preferiscono,  nella fattispecie i licheni piu’ morbidi e gustosi. 

Le renne sono molto tranquille e si muovono lentamente,  sembrano persino un po’ stupide,  percio’ con la giusta attenzione alla guida si possono evitare.  Anzi,  quando le circostanze del traffico lo permettono,  ci si puo’ godere la visione di questi non certo comuni animali!DSCN6883DSCN6884DSCN6892A noi e’ capitato di incrociarne una tutta bianca;  non so se fosse un caso di albinismo:  le renne hanno il manto anche di questo colore.  Comunque una visione certamente rara e quasi…suggestiva!

When travelling through northern Finland,  you will frequently meet the above road sign:  it is there to remind you that in this area there may be reindeer moving freely,  even on the roads.  They are mild animals,  though,  and if you drive carefully you will avoid them. 

Reindeer can be moving freely in the territory to look for their favourite food:  the softest and best lichen.  When traffic circumstances allow,  that is in full safety,  you can even enjoy the view of these uncommon critters. 

We happened to see a total white one:  I do not know if it was an albino one,  as reindeer can have white fur coat;  anyway it was a rare view and with a slight touch of…magic!

  4. Pio cominciare con la Finlandia, che e’ un po’ meno estrema… Helsinki e’ praticamente una citta’ dell’Europa centrale. Come stare in Germania, Salendo verso nord poi inizi a trovare strade sempre piu’ deserte e distanze sempre piu’ lunghe. Cosi’ ti abitui a quello che ti puo’ riservare l’Alaska.

  10. I´ve never visited Lapland, so haven´t seen raindeer in nature. With Santa I´ve seen it few times in shopping mall or such place. Lovely white specimen, I´ve never saw white one, not even in photo. Seems like you know Finland partly better than me. 🙂

  50. Having seen deer regularly around m previous house, this is definitely an albino male! So true, it gives you the feeling of being in a fairy tale seeing him!
