Un uccello buffo.

Cari lettori,  mi sono accorta che non vi avevo ancora proposto alcuna foto di un volatile molto diffuso qui in Finlandia che e’ anche un vero comico:  il picchio.  O meglio:  il Picchio rosso maggiore (Dendrocops major),  in finnico Käpytikka,  uno dei tanti tipi di picchio e senz’altro il piu’ comune.  Io lo trovo buffo per il modo che ha di muoversi,  di volare e di appendersi in verticale ai tronchi degli alberi per cercare il cibo di cui si nutre,  i piccoli insetti.  Nonche’ di scavare la corteccia con quel martello pneumatico che ha in testa. In questi scatti lo vedete appeso ad un contenitore di arachidi,  fuori dalla nostra finestra.

Curiosita’:  ad Aprile qui nel sud Finlandia bisogna rimuovere i contenitori con il cibo d’emergenza per gli uccellini che avevamo appeso a inizio novembre;  il clima primaverile e’ troppo tiepido e umido,  per cui potrebbero svilupparsi malattie come la salmonella…e noi non vogliamo che i nostri uccellini si ammalino.  Tanto,  adesso trovano abbondanza di cibo nei boschi.

A funny Bird.    

My dear readers,  today I’ll share with you some shots of a very common bird here in Finland whom I find also quite funny:  the Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocops major),  in Finnish:  Käpytikka.  I find it funny for the way it flies,  for the way it climbs tree trunks,  for how it hammers the bark to find food,  by way of the jackhammer in its head.  I spotted it while hanging on our little birds’ feeders in its clumsy style.  Among the few types of woodpecker,  this is the one who comes visiting our garden most.

Important:  here in south Finland in April it is recommendable to remove the emergency food and the feeders that we hanged out last November,  as the spring climate is too warm and humid and illnesses may develop…and we do not want our birds to fall ill!  Now they can find lots of food in the woodlands anyway:  snow is gone and new insects have been born.
