Toledo is an ancient monumental city located in central Spain, in the region of Castilla-la Mancha. It is also the capital town of this region. Toledo is known as the “Imperal City” for being the venue of emperor Charles V’s court and is nowadays a Unesco World Heritage site. In this post I’ll share a few significant views of the city, which boasts a long history: it has been in fact influenced by Roman, Arab, Christian and Jewish cultures. In Toled the famous painter El Greco worked for his last years and died in 1614.
In my first shots above: a general view of the city, built on top of a hill, featuring the old fortress Alcazar, nowadays a library and military museum. The St. Martin’s Bridge, onto the river Tejo, a major city gate.
Among the most visited points of interest in Toledo we find the Catholic cathedral, built onto a pre-existing Arabic Mosque. Its name is: Catedral Primada, being the venue of the Bishop; its architectural style is a mixture from gothic to mudejar and it sacristy and chapels hold a number of valuable artworks by El Greco, Van Dyck and Goya.
A fun fact: a certain number of red hats are hanging from the ceiling of the cathedral: they belong to the bishops who chose to be buried here.
Walking through the streets of ancient Toledo, you can admire its unmistakable architecture: Spanish style with a touch of Arabic. Toledo is just about 70km from Madrid and you can easily get there by train.
Last but not least, let’s talk about food: the most popular specialities in the area are based on game, for instance quail and partridge; but oven-roasted lamb is typical as well as the Toledo trout. In my final shot: a few jolly musicians entertaining tourists in a tavern.
