Midsummer Kokko  #2.

Salkola (which is correctly pronounced with the accent on the first “a”),  is a tiny village,  the residents are certainly less than fifty,  but it comes to life very much in the summer because it is full of country cottages,  softly placed on the shores of the large lake Salkolanjärvi and surrounded by gardens and woods and lots of greenery.

The Midsummer festival was organized by the local volunteers.  Many ladies had crowns of fresh flowers in their hair…

For those wondering why we weren’t sleeveless,  I’ll say that during the day the temperature was 20 degrees C,  but at midnight… it was 8 degrees C!  Here it’s like being in the mountains and also this June is quite cool.

One person even jumped into the lake and had a swim,  because the water was much warmer than the air.  The hardest part was getting out of the water… 😉

There was a bucket of liquid available for the children to make soap bubbles:  I followed a few and played a bit too…

All the photos surrounded by a coloured margin are edited.

  1. What a lovely tradition! I was fortunate to be in Trondheim, Norway one year for Midsummer. It was still a bit chilly! We were in long sleeves and covering up with blankets in the cafes. The light deep into the night was truly magical. I’d never experienced something like that before.
