Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un Mese nelle mie foto.

Aprile e’ iniziato con un’ondatina di caldo,  che ha fatto fare alla primavera parecchi passi avanti;  dopo pochi giorni pero’ qualche passo e’ tornato indietro…e abbiamo avuto una leggera nevicata.  A meta’ mese di nuovo caldo eccezionale e poi ancora freddo.  Fino a Pasqua,  quando il freddo e la neve si sono trasformati in pioggia.  Ovviamente qui siamo abituati e non ci sorprendiamo.  I riscaldamenti sono comunque ancora accesi e anche il camino,  a seconda della temperatura esterna.

Nonostante i passi avanti e indietro del tempo meteorologico,  la natura si e’ risvegliata anche qui nel sud Finlandia:  gli alberi hanno le loro belle gemme,  i Gattici sono sempre i primi,  e tutti gli uccelli migratori sono tornati.  La terra si sta sgelando anche negli strati piu’ profondi e presto si pianteranno le patate,  si seminera’ la lattuga,  le carote,  l’aneto,  gli spinaci,  la rucola e il prezzemolo.

Anche in Italia il tempo e’ stato molto perturbato in aprile.  Abbiamo avuto piogge consistenti con nevicate in montagna,  freddo e pericolo di tracimazione di alcuni fiumi e frane.

Nei giorni di Pasqua,  mentre in Finlandia e in Italia pioveva a dirotto,  noi abbiamo trovato uno splendido tempo primaverile in Lettonia.  A proposito di Pasqua,  in molti Paesi d’Europa il Lunedi’ dell’Angelo e’ festivo,  inclusi Italia,  Finlandia e Lettonia,  mentre in Estonia non lo e’.

Fra le notizie del mese,  mi fa piacere ricordare che la pittrice finlandese Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946)  sara’ esposta al Metropolitan Museum of Art a New York e sara’ la prima volta che un artista finlandese viene esposto in questo museo.  La mostra si chiamera’:  “Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck”.   Schjerfbeck fu una pittrice modernista,  famosa soprattutto per le nature morte,  gli autoritratti e i ritratti di vita intrisi di realismo.

La notizia piu’ importante qui in Finlandia sono state le elezioni comunali avvenute a meta’ mese,  nelle quali il partito di governo del premier Orpo ha perso molti consensi.  Si tratta di un partito conservatore,  il Kokoomus,  che ha perso voti a causa dei troppi tagli al welfare.  I finlandesi hanno premiato il partito di sinistra,  SDP.   Ma la perdita di consensi piu’ accentuata l’hanno avuta i Perussuomalaiset,  i “Veri finlandesi”,  un po’ la Lega di qui,  partito populista e xenofobo della destra.

Il presidente finlandese Alexander Stubb e’ andato in visita programmata negli USA a inizio mese.  Stubb e’ proprio l’uomo giusto per questo tipo di missione,  poiche’ parla perfettamente inglese,  ha una formazione politica,  ha studiato anche in America e soprattutto…gioca a golf.  Uno degli argomenti,  oltre all’Ucraina sulla quale Stubb ha riportato il punto di vista europeo concordato con Macron e Starmer,  e’ stato senz’altro la compravendita di un paio di navi rompighiaccio,  che gli USA hanno ordinato alla Finlandia.  Forse non e’ notizia troppo nota che il 60% di tutte le navi rompighiaccio a livello mondiale sono costruite nei cantieri finlandesi e comunque l’80% di quelle costruite altrove e’ stato progettato in Finlandia.

Questo mese come sapete tutti e’ pregno di notizie a livello internazionale e geopolitico.  Sembra che ci troviamo ad un punto di svolta nella vicenda ucraina,  speriamo che sia una svolta giusta e soprattutto che porti ad una pace giusta,  che non umili l’Ucraina.  Gli ucraini si sono battuti con estremo coraggio contro un invasore molte volte piu’ potente e non meritano l’umiliazione.  Anche perche’ questo invasore,  malgrado la sua tracotanza,  non e’ riuscito ancora a strappare che inconsistenti vantaggi territoriali.  Tuttavia la trattativa che l’attuale presidente degli Stati Uniti sta portando avanti,  mi sembra sia una trattativa commerciale,  piu’ che altro.  Speriamo che Trump non commetta l’errore che gli inglesi fecero con Hitler:  gli concessero la Cecoslovacchia e sappiamo tutti come ando’ a finire.

Il signor Putin nella sua grande magnanimita’ ci ha concesso di trascorrere una Pasqua tranquilla.  A Natale invece,  proprio il giorno 24 dicembre,  ci aveva fatto il bel regalo di tagliarci un cavo sottomarino per le telecomunicazioni che corre tra Finlandia e Lettonia,  che abbiamo riparato con impiego di uomini,  mezzi e soldi.  Stavolta e’ stato tranquillo:  segnale di pace agli USA?  Oppure le navi della NATO monitorano per bene il mar Baltico?  Oppure ancora come ha azzardato qualche giornalista,  i suoi oligarchi gli stanno facendo notare che e’ tempo di calmarsi un po’,  dato che gli introiti derivanti dalla vendita di petrolio si stanno assottigliando e presto bisognera’ attingere direttamente dai portafogli dei cittadini?  (Fonte:  HS).

Sempre in argomento geopolitico,  ho letto che la piccola Repubblica baltica di Lituania intende alzare al 5% del proprio PIL la spesa per la difesa.  La Lituania condivide la maggior parte del proprio confine con la Bielorussia e con Kaliningrad,  quindi con il famigerato corridoio di Suwalki.  Da qui la sensazione di essere sotto una minaccia costante,  minaccia che vista dall’Italia sembra davvero lontana e remota.

Una parentesi particolare merita il ricordo di Papa Francesco,  certamente un papa che ha vissuto e portato avanti il messaggio del Vangelo:  il papa degli ultimi,  come e’ stato definito.  E’ stato anche molto contestato da piu’ parti,  poiche’ insisteva con l’accoglienza ai migranti,  ma che cos’altro doveva dire?  Nel Vangelo e’ scritto che tutti siamo uguali e tutti siamo fratelli,  non solo la propria famiglia,  non il vicinato o il villaggio…ma tutti!  Per chi si professa credente,  questa e’ la regola.  E’ stato anche contestato per le sue aperture alle comunita’ omosessuali,  per aver concesso la comunione ai divorziati e risposati,  per la possibilita’ di sacerdozio alle donne:  io credo che queste aperture siano necessarie,  per liberare la Chiesa Cattolica da retaggi medioevali.

In occasione della scomparsa di Papa Francesco,  il governo italiano ha indetto ben 5 giorni di lutto nazionale,  per la prima volta nella storia.  Un modo encomiabile di rendergli omaggio.  Purtroppo i 5 giorni sono combaciati con le celebrazioni del 25 Aprile,  data importantissima,  che si sono svolte in tono minore.  Peccato,  perche’ dobbiamo molto a coloro che si sono sacrificati per liberare l’Italia dalla tirannia.   A latere,  va detto che questi 5 giorni hanno causato annullamenti di inaugurazioni ed eventi…che hanno fatto perdere biglietti di treni,  aerei,  giorni di lavoro…non sono sicura che Papa Francesco ne sarebbe stato entusiasta.

Tornando alle notizie piu’ spicciole,  vi racconto che la Finlandia ha approvato una legge che concede il permesso ai 17enni di prendere la patente di guida,  in casi eccezionali;  ad esempio se in famiglia non c’e’ nessun altro che puo’ guidare o se si abita in zone remote e mal collegate.  Ma a seguito di un grave incidente avvenuto nella cittadina di Nurmijärvi nel quale sono decedute due ragazze nate nel 2008,  qualcuno ha iniziato a dire che forse a 17 anni si e’ un po’ troppo giovani per guidare.  Le indagini comunque sono ancora in corso.

Domani e’ il 1 maggio e sia in Italia che in Finlandia si celebra l’importantissima Giornata del Lavoro.  Auguro a tutti voi lettori tutto il meglio!

A Month in my Photos.

April started with a bit of heat,  which made spring take a lot of steps forward;  after a few days,  however,  it took a few steps back… and we had a light snowfall.  In the middle of the month,  it was exceptionally hot again and then cold again.  Until Easter,  when the cold and snow turned into rain.  Of course,  we are used to it here and we are not surprised.  The heating is still on and the fireplace too,  depending on the outside temperature. 

Despite the ups and downs of the weather,  nature has awakened here in southern Finland too:   trees have beautiful buds,  the Catkins are always the first ones,  and all the migratory birds have returned.  The earth is thawing even in the deepest layers and soon we will plant potatoes,  sow lettuce,  carrots,  dill,  spinach,  rocket and parsley.

Even in Italy the weather was very disturbed in April.  We had heavy rains with snowfall in the mountains,  cold and the risk of overflowing of some rivers and landslides.

During the Easter days,  while it was pouring with rain in Finland and Italy,  we had beautiful spring weather in Latvia.  Speaking of Easter,  Easter Monday is a holiday in many European countries,  including Italy,  Finland and Latvia,  while in Estonia it is not.

Among the news of the month,  I am pleased to mention that Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck’s works (1862-1946) will be exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York,  and it will be the first time that a Finnish artist has been exhibited in this museum.  The exhibition will be called:  “Seeing Silence:  The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck”.  Schjerfbeck was a modernist painter,  best known for her still lifes,  self-portraits and life portraits imbued with realism. 

The biggest news here in Finland in April were the regional and municipal elections that took place in the middle of the month,  in which the governing party of Prime Minister Orpo lost a lot of consensus.  It is a conservative party,  Kokoomus,  which lost votes due to the too many cuts done to welfare.  The Finns rewarded the left-wing party,  SDP.  Anyway the most significant loss of consensus was suffered by Perussuomalaiset,  the “True Finns”,   a populist and xenophobic right-hand party.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb made a scheduled visit to the US earlier this month.  Stubb is just the right man for this kind of mission,  as he speaks perfect English,  has a political background,  has studied also in America and most importantly… plays golf.  One of the topics discussed (besides Ukraine on which Stubb reported the European point of view agreed with Macron and Starmer),  was the purchase of a couple of icebreakers,  which the US has ordered from Finland.  It is perhaps not too well known that 60% of all icebreakers in the world are built in Finnish shipyards and 80% of those built elsewhere were designed in Finland.

This month,  as you all know,  is full of news at an international and geopolitical level.  It seems that we are at a turning point in the Ukrainian war,  let’s hope that it is a just turning point and above all that it leads to a just peace,  that does not humiliate Ukraine.  The Ukrainians fought with extreme courage against an invader many times more powerful and do not deserve humiliation.  Also because this invader,  despite his arrogance,  has not yet managed to wrest anything but inconsistent territorial advantages.  However,  the negotiation that the current president of the United States is carrying forward seems to me to be a commercial negotiation,  more than anything else.  Let’s hope that Trump does not make the same mistake that the English made with Hitler:  they granted him Czechoslovakia and we all know how it ended.

Mr. Putin,  in his great magnanimity,  allowed us to spend a quiet Easter.  At Christmas,  on December 24,  he gave us a nice gift:  the damage of an undersea telecommunications cable that runs between Finland and Latvia,  which we repaired employing men,  means and money.  This time he was calm:  a sign of peace to the USA?  Or are NATO ships carefully monitoring the Baltic Sea?  Or,  as some journalists have ventured,  are his oligarchs making him notice that it is time to calm down a bit,  given that oil revenues are dwindling and will soon have to be drawn directly from citizens’ wallets?  (Source:  HS).

Still on the subject of geopolitics,  I read that the small Baltic Republic of Lithuania intends to raise defense spending to 5% of its GDP.  Lithuania shares most of its border with Belarus and Kaliningrad,  therefore with the infamous Suwalki corridor.  Hence the feeling of being under constant threat,  a threat that seen from Italy seems truly distant and remote.

A special mention should be made of Pope Francis,  certainly a pope who lived and carried forward the message of the Gospel:  the pope of the least,  as he was defined.  He was also highly contested from many sides,  because he insisted on welcoming migrants,  but what else was he supposed to say?  In the Gospel it is written that we are all equal and we are all brothers,  not just our own family,  not the neighborhood or the village…but everyone!  For those who profess to be believers,  this is the rule.  He was also contested for his openness to homosexual communities,  for having granted communion to divorced and remarried people,  for the possibility of women becoming priests:  I believe that these opennesses are necessary,  to free the Catholic Church from medieval legacies. 

On the occasion of the death of Pope Francis,  the Italian government declared 5 days of national mourning,  for the first time in history.  It was a great way to honour him.  Unfortunately,  the 5 days coincided with the celebrations of April 25,  the Liberation Day,  which were held in a minor tone.  This was a pity,  because we owe quite much to the men and women who sacrificed to help Italy get rid of tyranny.  Incidentally,  it must be said that these 5 days caused cancellations of inaugurations and events… which caused people to lose train tickets,  plane tickets,  working days…I am not sure that Pope Francis would have been happy with it.

Back to the more ordinary news, I ‘ll tell you that Finland has approved a law that allows 17-year-olds to get a driving license,  in exceptional cases;  for example,  if there is no one else in the family who can drive or if you live in remote and poorly connected areas.  But following a serious accident in the town of Nurmijärvi in ​​which two girls born in 2008 died,  some have started to say that perhaps 17 is a little too young to drive.  Investigations are still ongoing,  anyway.

Tomorrow is May 1st and both Italy and Finland celebrate the very important Labor Day.  I wish all of you readers all the best!
