Un mese nelle mie foto.

Novembre e’ stato ancora una volta altalenante fra temperature miti e impulsi piu’ freddi.  Abbiamo aperto il mese con una bella nevicata proprio il giorno 1,  ma si sapeva che non sarebbe durata.  Questa nevicata e’ stata portata da una tempesta atlantica di eccezionale intensita’,  con venti che hanno raggiunto ben 33metri al secondo nel mare al largo di Rauma.  Tale intensita’ e’ stata di breve durata,  ma ha battuto tutti i record di sempre in Finlandia.

Nel prosieguo del mese abbiamo poi goduto di giornate miti,  con fino a 6/9 gradi pomeridiani.  Solo adesso a fine mese e’ arrivato dell’altro freddo,  addirittura una tempesta di neve con forti raffiche di vento,  che ancora una volta hanno portato disagi come cancellazioni e ritardi di treni e aerei e qualche incidente stradale.  Anche questa nevicata pero’ non è durata molto,  dato che dopo qualche giorno il rialzo termico ha portato al completo scioglimento e addirittura ad episodi di inondazioni come in primavera.

Di contro,  abbiamo avuto un record di temperature miti nell’estremo nord del Paese,  nella regione dei Sami.  Tutti eventi eccezionali,   come speriamo che sia stata eccezionale e non si ripeta la dolorosa devastazione portata dalle intense piogge alla citta’ di Valencia e a tutto il sud della Spagna.  Ho dei conoscenti in quelle zone,  che per fortuna non hanno avuto grossi danni.

Le giornate adesso sono drasticamente corte,  pero’ va detto che abbiamo albe e tramonti lunghissimi.  In inverno il tramonto dura circa un’ora,  che qui chiamiamo “l’ora blu” perche’ nelle giornate serene il cielo si tinge di questo colore ad est,  mentre ad ovest e’ rosato.

Il cambiamento verso le giornate cortissime e’ pero’ graduale e il corpo ha tempo di acclimatarsi.  Come reazione alla mancanza di luce naturale,  si vedono comunque spuntare qua e la’ nelle finestre delle case e nei giardini alcune lucine,  che qui chiamiamo “luci di stagione”,  volendo significare che non sono proprio solo natalizie… Mentre all’interno delle nostre case,  le candele accese aumentano la piacevolezza e il calore.

Naturalmente gli uccelli migratori se ne sono andati praticamente tutti,  tranne i cigni e qualche sparuto stormo di pazzi che ha deciso di rimanere,  pensando di trovare cibo per il lungo inverno.  Fra questi i merli.  Noi abbiamo installato le solite due mangiatoie con semi di girasole senza buccia,  per aiutare la sopravvivenza degli uccelli stanziali.  Se poi qualche sparviero viene a cacciarli per mangiarseli,  vorra’ dire che avremo aiutato anche lo sparviero.

La notizia del mese qui e’ naturalmente il danneggiamento dei cavi sottomarini di telecomunicazioni che corrono tra Finlandia e Germania e tra Svezia e Lettonia.  Dalle indagini svolte dalle marinerie degli stati scandinavi,  risulta che un mercantile battente bandiera cinese abbia stazionato proprio nel punto del danneggiamento (dove i cavi si incrociano) per circa 1 ora,  con “transponder” spento.  Le diplomazie dei suddetti stati sono state molto caute ad attribuire responsabilita’ e mandanti:  vogliono terminare le indagini prima di esprimersi.   Purtroppo nel diritto nautico internazionale non e’ previsto questo avvenimento,  per cui non e’ precisata una sanzione contro gli eventuali colpevoli.  I cavi sono lunghi circa 2km e fortunatamente sono provvisti di cavi di back-up,  quindi le comunicazioni non hanno subito interruzioni,  ma i costi per la riparazione sono comunque un grave danno.

Si è apparentemente ripetuto ciò che avvenne due anni fa col danneggiamento del gasdotto Baltic Connector,  ad opera di un altro mercantile battente bandiera cinese.

Un atto di vandalismo gratuito e’ stato perpetrato contro l’ambasciata finlandese a Mosca,  sul muro della quale e’ apparsa la scritta:  “Le Åland sono nostre”.  Le isole Åland sono un arcipelago finlandese situato tra Finlandia e Svezia che gode di una certa autonomia e soprattutto sono demilitarizzate.  Questo gesto ci da’ la misura della volonta’ della Russia di dialogare e di cercare la pace.

Altre notizie spicciole trovate sul Helsingin Sanomat:   Nel mondo nascono ogni giorno circa 62 milioni di polli.

In Finlandia nidificano in estate 400 coppie di Aquile di mare e 190 sono le specie diverse di uccelli migratori che qui nidificano.  Ma in Europa in totale sono stati censiti circa 600 milioni di volatili in meno (di tutte le specie),  rispetto a 40 anni fa.

In Finlandia circa 40.000 persone parlano arabo come lingua madre.

Dalle statistiche del 2023 risulta che gli infrmieri hanno avuto mediamente 23 giorni di congedo per malattia durante l’anno.  I medici in media 6 giorni.

I bambini iniziano a ricordare i sogni (come accade agli adulti) attorno ai 9-11 anni.  L’eta’ nella quale sono maggiormente soggetti ad incubi notturni e’ attorno ai 10 anni.

Il Paese con l’esercito piu’ grande e attivo al mondo e’ la Cina.  Seconda l’India.

La pittrice italiana Sofonisba Anguissola,  vissuta nel 1500,  probabilmente e’ stata la prima a farsi un autoritratto utilizzando uno specchio in vetro,  oggetto appena inventato come lo conosciamo noi.  Prima degli specchi cosituiti da una lastra di cristallo unita a mercurio e stagno,  si utilizzavano altri tipi di “specchi”,  ad esempio semplici lastre di vetro,  metallo…

Solo nel 2024 la Norvegia ha promulgato una legge per proibire i matrimoni tra cugini.  In Pakistan oggi circa la meta’ dei matrimoni avvengono tra consanguinei,  mentre in Iraq il 28% delle ragazze si sposa prima dei 18 anni.

Ogni finlandese acquista tuttora circa 63 borse di plastica per la spesa ogni anno.

L’uso di combustibili fossili e’ salito nel 2023 del 1,5% rispetto al 2022.

Un dato che fa riflettere a proposito delle piogge talvolta consistenti:  ogni grado in piu’ di calore nell’atmosfera,  fa aumentare l’umidita’ del 7%.  (Ditelo anche ai vecchi cantanti complottisti… ;)).

A Month in my Photos.

November was once again a roller coaster of mild temperatures and colder spells.  We started the month with a nice snowfall on the 1st,  but it was known that it would not last.  This snowfall was brought by an Atlantic storm of exceptional intensity,  with winds reaching 33 meters per second in the sea off Rauma.  This intensity was short-lived,  but it broke all records ever in Finland.

During the rest of the month we enjoyed mild days,  with temperatures up to 6/9 degrees C in the afternoon.  Only now at the end of the month has more cold arrived:  even a snowstorm with strong wind gusts,  which once again brought disruptions such as cancellations and delays of trains and planes and some road accidents.  However,  even this snowfall did not last long,  given that after a few days the temperature increase led to complete melting and even episodes of flooding like in spring.

On the other hand,  we have had record mild temperatures in the far north of the country,  in the Sami region.  All exceptional events,  as we hope the painful devastation brought by the intense rains to the city of Valencia and the whole of southern Spain will not be repeated.  I have acquaintances in those areas,  who fortunately have not suffered major damage.

The days are really short now,  but it must be said that we have very long sunrises and sunsets.  In winter,  sunset lasts about an hour,  which here we call “the blue hour” because on clear days the sky is tinged with this color in the east,  while in the west it is pink. 

The change towards very short days is gradual,  however,  and our body has time to acclimatize.  As a reaction to the lack of natural light,  you can already see some lights appearing here and there in homes windows and in gardens,  which here we call “seasonal lights”,  meaning that they are not just Christmas lights… While inside our homes, lit candles increase the pleasantness and warmth. 

Of course practically all migratory birds have gone,  except for the swans and a few scattered flocks of crazy ones that decided to stay,  thinking they would find food for the long winter.  Among these are blackbirds.  We have installed the usual two feeders with sunflower seeds,  to help the survival of resident birds.  If then some Sparrowhawk comes to hunt them to eat them,  it will mean that we have helped the Sparrowhawk as well.

The news of the month here is of course the damage to the submarine telecommunications cables that run between Finland and Germany and between Sweden and Latvia.  From the investigations carried out by the navies of the Scandinavian countries,  it appears that a merchant ship flying the Chinese flag was stationed right at the point of damage (where the cables cross) for about 1 hour,  with the “transponder” turned off.  The diplomacies of the aforementioned states have been very cautious in attributing responsibilities and instigators:   they want to finish the investigations before expressing their opinion.  Unfortunately,  international nautical law does not provide for this event,  so a sanction against any culprits is not specified.  The cables are about 2 km long and fortunately they are equipped with back-up cables,  so communications were not interrupted,  but the costs for the repair are still a serious damage.

What happened two years ago with the damage to the Baltic Connector gas pipeline by another Chinese-flagged merchant vessel has apparently been repeated.

An act of gratuitous vandalism was perpetrated against the Finnish embassy in Moscow,  on whose wall somebody wrtote: “Åland is ours”.  The Åland Islands are a Finnish archipelago located between Finland and Sweden that enjoys a certain autonomy and above all is demilitarized.  This gesture gives us the measure of Russia’s will to dialogue and seek peace.

More small news found on Helsingin Sanomat:  Every day around 62 million chickens are born in the world.

In Finland 400 pairs of White-tailed eagles nest in the summer and 190 different species of migratory birds nest here.  But in Europe around 600 million fewer birds (of all species) have been counted compared to 40 years ago.

In Finland,  around 40,000 people speak Arabic as their mother tongue.

Statistics from 2023 show that nurses had an average of 23 days of sick leave during the year.  Doctors had an average of 6 days.

Children start to remember dreams (like adults) around 9-11 years old.  The age at which they are most subject to nightmares is around 10 years old. 

The country with the largest and most active army in the world is China.  India comes second.

 Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola,  who lived in the 1500s,  was probably the first to paint a self-portrait using a glass mirror,  a newly invented object as we know it.  Before mirrors made of a sheet of crystal combined with mercury and tin were invented,  other types of “mirrors” were used,  such as simple sheets of glass,  metal…

Norway passed a law in 2024 to ban marriages between cousins.  In Pakistan,  about half of marriages are now between blood relatives,  while in Iraq 28% of girls marry before the age of 18.

Each Finn still buys about 63 plastic shopping bags each year.

The use of fossil fuels increased by 1.5% in 2023 compared to 2022 worldwide.

A thought-provoking fact about the sometimes heavy rains:  every additional degree of heat in the atmosphere increases humidity by 7%.  (Tell that to old conspiracy-theorist singers too… ;)).
