In autunno tutti gli animali del bosco cercano un riparo per la brutta stagione e molti di loro si avvicinano alle case degli umani in cerca di calore e cibo.  Lo fanno anche i topolini e le talpe che vivono nel sottobosco.  Da noi cercano di insinuarsi nella legnaia,  fra i ciocchi.

Talvolta troviamo qualche topolino o qualche talpa nelle trappole che abbiamo messo per scoraggiare questi animali dal venire a fare il nido invernale da noi.  Talvolta ci ricordiamo di posizionare il povero malcapitato davanti alla fototrappola per vedere chi se ne ciba.

Oggi vi propongo le foto della Ghiandaia,  che come il Cane-procione e’ una spazzina dei boschi e mangia anche gli animali gia’ morti.  Generalmente rapaci e predatori non si cibano di prede gia’ morte:  preferiscono catturarle vive.

Effortless Prey.

In autumn all the animals in the woodlands look for shelter from the bad weather and many of them come close to human homes in search of warmth and food.  Even the mice and moles that live in the undergrowth do this.   In particular,  they try to sneak into our woodshed,  between the logs. 

Sometimes we find some mice or moles in the traps we have set to discourage these animals from coming to make their winter nest where we are.  Sometimes we remember to place the poor unfortunate one in front of the trail-cam to see who feeds on it. 

Today I will propose photos of the Eurasian Jay,  which like the Raccoon Dog is a scavenger of the woods and also eats animals that are already dead.  Generally birds of prey and predators do not feed on preys that are already dead:  they want to catch them.

  24. It’s amazing to see how animals like the Jay and Raccoon Dog help keep the forest clean by feeding on what’s already there. I love getting a peek at this side of nature—especially in the cozy autumn season when so many creatures come closer to us for warmth and food. Thanks for sharing these awesome photos and stories!
