Cari lettori,  oggi vi propongo una passeggiata sui Bastioni di Lappeenranta,  come l’abbiamo fatta noi nell’ottobre del 2011.

Lappeenranta e’ una importante e popolosa citta’ del sud-est Finlandia,  si trova infatti solo a 30km dal confine russo e a soli 64 dalla citta’ di Vyborg  (in finlandese:  Viippuri),  a sua volta  la citta’ piu’ importante che la Finlandia dovette cedere a Stalin in occasione della pace firmata dopo l’invasione sovietica negli anni ’40.

Lappeenranta si situa anche sulle rive del lago Saimaa,  il piu’ esteso in Finlandia.  E’ una citta’ a vocazione turistica,  specialmente da parte del turismo russo,  la mancanza del quale adesso a causa della guerra in Ucraina,  ha provocato seri contraccolpi economici.  Lappeenranta era infatti la seconda meta piu’ popolare dopo Helsinki.

I Bastioni sui quali si passeggia godendo una bella vista della citta’,  sono le antiche fortificazioni,  costruite in parte dagli svedesi (quando la Finlandia era parte della Svezia)  e in parte dai russi (quando la Finlandia era un Granducato di San Pietroburgo).  Sui Bastioni si trovano musei,  la chiesa ortodossa piu’ antica della Finlandia,  negozi di artigianato e caffe’.

Lappeenranta e’ anche una citta’ a vocazione commerciale,  dato che il lago Saimaa e’ collegato da corsi d’acqua e canali vari a molti altri porti.  Inoltre e’ una citta’ universitaria ed e’ molto attenta all’ambiente.

A Lappeenranta e dintorni si possono visitare parchi nazionali,  fare trekking,  crociere sul Saimaa,  vedere la citta’ vecchia,  oltre ai centri commerciali ci sono parchi divertimenti,  festival con rievocazioni storiche e impianti sportivi.  Ancora,  date le spiagge sabbiose sulle rive del Saimaa,  ogni anno viene costuito il castello di sabbia piu’ grande di Finlandia.

Dato che la mattinata ottobrina era fresca e limpida,  la conclusione della nostra passeggiata sui Bastioni di Lappeenranta e’ una sosta al Caffe’ Majurska,  situato proprio li’.

Around the Fortress.

Dear readers,  today I will share with you a walk on the Lappeenranta Fortress,  as we did in October 2011.

Lappeenranta is an important and populous city in south-eastern Finland,  in fact it is located only 30 km from the Russian border and only 64 from the city of Vyborg (in Finnish: Viippuri),  the most important city that Finland had to give up to Stalin as a result of the peace signed after the Soviet invasion in the 40s.

Lappeenranta is located on the shores of Lake Saimaa,  the largest lake in Finland.  It is a city with a slant to tourism,  especially to Russian tourism,  the lack of which now due to the Ukraine war,  has caused serious economic consequences.  Lappeenranta was in fact the second most popular destination after Helsinki.

The Fortress and its embankment, where you can walk and enjoy a beautiful view of the city,  is the old fortifications, built partly by the Swedes (when Finland was part of Sweden) and partly by the Russians (when Finland was a Grand Duchy of St. Petersburg).  On the Bastions there are museums,  the oldest Orthodox church in Finland,  craft shops and cafes.

Lappeenranta is also a commercial city,  as Lake Saimaa is connected by waterways and canals to many other ports.  Moreover it has an important University and is environment friendly.

In and around Lappeenranta you can visit national parks,  go trekking,  cruise on Saimaa,  see the old town,  in addition to shopping centers there are amusement parks,  festivals with historical reenactments and sports facilities.  Furthermore,  given the sandy beaches on the shores of Saimaa,  every year the largest sand castle in Finland is built.

Since the October morning was cool and clear,  our walk along the Lappeenranta Bastions ended up with a stop at the Majurska Café,  located right there.

  1. Mi hai incuriosito, sono andato a leggere su Wiki e guardato dove si trova. Mi sembra una città davvero interessante e molto bella, e la tua descrizione avvalora il tutto.

    E’ paradossalmente più vicina a San Pietroburgo che a Helsinki.

    Certo che il lago Saimaa ha una forma davvero strana.

  4. Oh, guarda Luisella: io adoro la geografia in senso generale. Mi piacciono le città, le nazioni, laghi fiumi etc, ma anche le cittadine “minori” e luoghi che possono essere visitati.
    Con la fantasia mi immagino di poterle visitare, per cui ciò che scrivi è sempre per me fonte di enorme curiosità ed interesse.
