Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Settembre in Finlandia e’ iniziato con la sorpresa graditissima di gionate calde e soleggiate.  Per la verita’ i primi tre giorni sono stati piovosi,  ma poi cio’ che e’ seguito e’ stato un periodo di temperature tra i 20 e i 25 gradi con punte di 27.  Dunque per noi che eravamo gia’ propensi all’arrivo dell’autunno,  ha segnato un prolungamento di questa bella estate.

Le temperature dicevo sono state al di sopra delle medie del periodo;  in Lapponia specialmente si sono battuti record stagionali:  dove le medie dovrebbero essere 12 gradi,  questo inizio mese ne ha portati 20!  Non e’ l’unico record che questo anno ha battuto:  le statistiche ci dicono che quest’anno per ben 70 giorni (non continuativi) il termometro e’ salito fin sopra i 25 gradi,  al punto che i finlandesi chiamano:  helle,  cioe’ il caldo vero.

Persino i mari che circondano la Finlandia sono stati di circa 6 gradi più caldi di sempre:  sia il Golfo di Finlandia che il Golfo di Botnia.

In Italia a inizio mese invece e’ arrivata una consistente perturbazione atlantica che ha spazzato via l’estate,  con nubifragi e vento.  E’ stata la stessa che ha spinto l’aria calda fin qui al nord e purtroppo e’ stata quella che ha portato a fine mese allagamenti e morti e sfollati in molte parti dell’Europa del centro-est.

Tra le notizie e le statistiche mensili,  il fatto che grazie alla caccia o ad una presenza leggermente maggiore di predatori naturali sul territorio,  il numero di cervi e caprioli e’ diminuito del 20%.  E’ una buona notizia,  poiche’ questi simpatici animali negli ultimi decenni si sono riprodotti e moltiplicati senza controllo e adesso il loro numero enorme e’ un danno per le colture e per orti e giardini;  detto banalmente:  cervi e caprioli mangiano tutto.  E pensare che i cervi non sono animali autoctoni:  ne sono stati importati solo cinque negli anni ’30 dagli USA a scopo di caccia.  Attualmente sul suolo finlandese se ne censiscono 109.000 e (anno 2022),  tutti nella Finlandia meridionale,  poiche’ non resistono alle ristrettezze invernali oltre una certa latitudine.

Un altro animale sempre piu’ presente in Finlandia e’ la Gru,  che pero’ in inverno se ne va in Africa a soggiornare.  Oggigiorno vedere una gru o una famiglia di gru con i piccoli non e’ piu’ una sorpresa,  poiche’ durante l’estate si vedono “pascolare” nei campi e sul bordo dei boschi,  specie nelle zone vicine a corsi d’acqua.  Ricordo io stessa invece che 20 o 30 anni fa si avvistavano solo a prezzo di appostamenti nelle aree predisposte al birdwatching.  Ho letto in questi giorni un paio di curiosita’ sulle gru,  che vi riporto;  i piccoli delle gru crescono anche di due centimetri al giorno:  certamente devono essere pronti ad affrontare la lunga migrazione.  Inoltre,  gli antichi Egizi che le vedevano sparire in estate,  pensavano che si rifugiassero sul fondo del mare.  Le gru sono da sempre esempio proverbiale di resistenza,  sopravvivenza,  resilienza e portatrici di fortuna.

Curiosita’ astronomiche:  la Stella Polare,  che qui splende luccicante nei tersi cieli invernali,  ha un diametro di circa 46 volte quello del sole (che peraltro e’ classificato come “nana gialla”).  La stella Polare pero’ e’ l’ammasso di tre stelle.
Le statistiche ci dicono che molti turisti provenienti dal sud Europa quest’anno sono venuti qui al nord a cercare un clima meno caldo e opprimente.  Probabilmente e’ un trend in crescita;  anche per questo motivo i governi dovrebbero prendere provvedimenti per arginare la crisi climatica,  invece di negarla,  dato che il turismo porta notevoli introiti.  Il turismo poi,  se fatto con buona volontà di capire le popolazioni che si visitano e le loro culture,  è sempre un arricchimento e facilita senz’altro le relazioni internazionali. 

A proposito di questo,  io stessa ho incontrato a Kuopio recentemente due coppie di turisti bergamaschi che stavano girando la Finlandia in treno (lodevoli!),  un altro gruppo di milanesi che mi hanno proprio detto di essere venuti in cerca di refrigerio e una famiglia toscana che invece era in giro in viaggio organizzato.

In Italia nel 2023 e’ cresciuto il numero di abbandoni di cani domestici sulle strade:  sono stati 85.000,  circa l’8,6% in piu’ rispetto al 2022.  (Fonte:  Corriere online).

Il fenomeno esiste anche in Finlandia,  circa 20.000 gatti vengono abbandonati ogni anno.  Il loro destino e’ segnato:  se non vengono raccolti da qualcuno e portati nei gattili,  probabilmente periranno durante l’inverno.  (Fonte:  SEY.fi)

Dal 1 settembre 2024 in Finlandia l’IVA (Imposta sul Valore Aggiunto che qui si chiama ALV),  e’ al 25.5%.   Solo alcuni generi sono esclusi,  come gli alimentari,  per i quali e’ al 14%,  i medicinali,  i libri e i servizi per lo sport per i quali e’ al 10%.  Le indicazioni della UE sono di mantenerla almeno al 15% per tutti i Paesi;  in Svezia e anche in Danimarca e’ al 25.0%,  la Svizzera l’ha al 18% e chi la tiene piu’ bassa di tutti e’ Andorra col 5%.

A Month in my Photos.

September in Finland started with the very welcome surprise of warm and sunny days.  To be honest,  the first three days were rainy,  but then what followed was a period of temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees with peaks of 27.   So for us who were already inclined towards the arrival of autumn,  it marked an extension of this beautiful summer.

As I was saying,  temperatures  were above the averages for the time of year;  in Lapland especially,  seasonal records were broken:  where the average should be 12 degrees C,  this beginning of the month brought 20!  It is not the only record that this year has broken:   statistics tell us that this year for a good 70 days (not consecutive) the thermometer rose above 25 degrees,  to the point that the Finns call:  helle,  that is,  the real heat.

Even the seas around Finland have been about 6 degrees warmer ever,  both the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia.

In Italy,  at the beginning of the month a significant Atlantic disturbance arrived to sweep away the summer,  with downpours and wind.  It was the same one that pushed the warm air up here to the north and unfortunately it was the one that led to flooding and deaths and displaced people in many parts of central-eastern Europe at the end of the month.

Among the monthly news and statistics,  the fact that thanks to hunting or a slightly greater presence of natural predators in the area,  the number of deer and roe deer has decreased by 20%.  This is good news,  because these friendly animals have reproduced and multiplied without control in recent decades and now their enormous number is damaging crops and gardens;  to put it simply:  deer and roe deer eat everything.  Moreover,  deer are not native animals:  only five were imported in the 1930s from the USA for hunting purposes.  Currently there are 109,000 of them on Finnish soil (as of 2022),  all of them in southern Finland,  as they cannot survive the winter cold beyond a certain latitude.

Another animal that is increasingly present in Finland is the Crane,  which however goes to Africa to stay in the winter.  Nowadays,  seeing a Crane or a family of Cranes with their young ones is no longer a surprise,  since during the summer they are seen “grazing” in the fields and on the edge of the woods,  especially in areas near watercourses.  I myself remember that 20 or 30 years ago they were only spotted by stakeouts in areas set up for birdwatching.  I have read a couple of curiosities about Cranes in recent days,  which I will report to you;  Crane chicks grow up to two centimetres a day:  they certainly must be ready to face the long migration.  Furthermore,  the ancient Egyptians who saw them disappear in the summer,  thought that they took refuge on the seabed.  Cranes have always been a proverbial example of resistance,  survival,  resilience and good luck symbols. 

Astronomical curiosities:  Polaris,  (the North star),  which shines brightly here in the clear winter skies,  has a diameter of about 46 times the sun (which is also classified as a “yellow dwarf”).  However, Polaris is a cluster of three stars.

Statistics tell us that many tourists from southern Europe this year have come to the north in search of a less hot and oppressive climate.  It is probably a growing trend;  also for this reason governments should take measures to stem the climate crisis,  instead of denying it,  given that tourism brings in considerable revenue.  If intended with the good will to understand foreign cultures and populations,  tourism is a personal enrichment and a step towards easier international relations. 

Speaking of this, I myself recently met in Kuopio two couples of tourists from Bergamo who were touring Finland by train (praiseworthy!),  another group of Milanese who told me they had come in search of refreshment and a Tuscan family who were on an organised trip.

In Italy in 2023,  the number of domestic dogs abandoned on the streets increased:  there were 85,000;  about plus 8.6% compared to 2022.  (Source: Corriere della Sera online).

From 1 September 2024 in Finland the VAT (Value Added Tax,  here called ALV),  is 25.5%.  Only some products are an exception such as food,  for which it is 14%,  medicines,  books and sports services for which it is 10%.  The EU indications recommend to keep it at least 15% for all countries;  in Sweden and also in Denmark it is 25.0%,  Switzerland has it at 18% and the one keeping it lowest of all is Andorra with 5%.
