Il cane procione.

L’animale di cui vi parlo oggi e’ senz’altro sconosciuto ai piu’. Si tratta di un animale piuttosto misterioso, che si aggira nei boschi di notte e che e’ rarissimo sorprendere di giorno. Tutte le foto del post infatti vengono dalla mia fototrappola. Personalmente, di giorno l’ho visto un paio di volte.

Si chiama: Cane procione o cane viverrino e gia’ dal nome scientifico Nyctereutes procyonoides si identifica come nottambulo. E’ un canide a tutti gli effetti, ma data la sua somiglianza al Procione (l’Orsetto lavatore) gli e’ stato affibiato il doppio nome. Il Procione pero’ e’ un urside, mentre il cane procione e’ un canide, parente della volpe.

In finnico si chiama: Supikoira.

Di aspetto simpatico, ha arti corti, musetto allungato e una folta pelliccia nella stagione fredda. E’ originario delle steppe dell’Asia, dove e’ molto diffuso ed e’ arrivato fino in Europa perche’ e’ stato introdotto come animale da pelliccia.

Il cane procione e’ onnivoro, ma non e’ un gran cacciatore di suo, percio’ mangia cio’ che trova, anche lasciato da altri animali. Viene pero’ classificato come specie invasiva perche’ e’ comunque capace di distruggere nidi di volatili che nidificano sul terreno per cibarsene, oppure di piccoli anfibi… Per esperienza personale, posso dire che mangia i mirtilli e non solo quelli del bosco: anche quelli coltivati nel nostro orto!

Per finire, due rare foto del cane procione sorpreso di giorno ed in estate. Come vedete, la pelliccia e’ stata cambiata nella versione estiva.

Il cane procione sopravvive bene negli inverni freddi anche perche’ va in letargo leggero d’inverno, cioe’ non continuativamente, a differenza degli ursidi e poi perche’ e’ un animale piuttosto bravo a cavarsela e a trovare soluzioni. Vi mostrero’ un video sorprendente a questo proposito, in futuro.

The Raccoon Dog.

The animal I am talking about today is perhaps unknown to most of you. It is a rather mysterious animal, that roams the woodlands at night and is very rarely viewed during the day. All the photos in this post come from my camera trap. Personally, I have seen it just a couple of times during the day.

Its name is: Common Raccoon dog and already from its scientific name Nyctereutes procyonoides it is identified as a night creature. It is a canid in all respects, but given its resemblance to the Raccoon it has been given the double name. However, the Raccoon is a bear, while the Raccoon dog is a canid, relative of the Fox.

In Finnish its name is: Supikoira.

The Raccoon dog look quite cute, it has short limbs, a long muzzle and thick fur in the cold season. It is native to the steppes of Asia, where it is very widespread and has arrived in Europe because it was introduced as a fur animal.

It is omnivorous, but it is not a great hunter by nature, so it eats what it finds, even leftovers by other animals. However, it is classified as an invasive species because it is still capable of destroying nests of birds that nest on the ground to feed on them, or small amphibians… From personal experience, I can say that it eats blueberries and not only those from the forest: also those grown in our garden!

Finally, two rare photos of the raccoon dog surprised during the day and in summer. As you can see, its fur has been changed into the summer version.

The raccoon dog survives well in cold winters also because it hibernates lightly in winter, that is not continuously, unlike bears and also because it is an animal rather good at getting by and finding solutions. I will show you a surprising video about this, in the future.
