Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Maggio e’ stato segnato da un impulso freddo a inizio mese che ha portato notti sottozero anche nella Finlandia meridionale,  fortunatamente nulla era ancora fiorito:  mi riferisco ai frutti di bosco che sono una pregiata fonte di vitamine a km zero.  I mirtilli e i lamponi infatti fioriscono a fine maggio,  mentre altre bacche piu’ avanti. 

Dopo un inizio stentato,  pero’,  il tempo si e’ rimesso al bello e tutta la natura che ci circonda ha ripreso il suo rigoglio:  e’ formidabile vedere quanto velocemente gli alberi fanno germogliare le foglioline nuove e quanto poco tempo impiega la nuova erbetta a spuntare nei giardini.  Letteralmente da un giorno all’altro.

A meta’ mese è scoppiata l’estate,  letteralmente:  temperature fino a 26 gradi e alta pressione stabile.  Noi abbiamo piantato le patate,  seminato carote,  lattuga,  aneto e spinaci.  Le prime patate novelle saranno pronte fra 50 giorni circa e come sapete sono una primizia a cui i finlandesi non resistono.   https://traitaliaefinlandia.com/2017/09/19/i-mangiatori-di-patate/

In Italia tutto maggio e’ stato fresco con abbondanti piogge e temporali,  almeno nell’alta Italia.

A inizio mese il sole ha prodotto una forte eruzione che impattando con la nostra atmosfera ha generato un’aurora boreale storica e potentissima:  e’ stata vista infatti a latitudini bassissime,  perfino in Italia.  Il paradosso e’ stato che noi non l’abbiamo vista perche’ le notti sono gia’ troppo chiare:  alle 1.30 c’e’ ancora luce e alle 4.30 e’ gia’ pieno giorno!  Se ci mettiamo poi che il picco era alle 9.00 di mattina e che…ehm…qualcuno di notte vuol dormire…ecco che proprio non la si puo’ vedere. 😉

Aspetteremo la prossima…tanto ripassa di qui sicuramente.

Gli uccelli migratori sono arrivati proprio tutti:  ho visto anche le rondini e sentito il canto del cuculo.  Non manca piu’ nessuno.  Anzi,  qualcuno e’ gia’ alle prese con la prima covata.  Noi abbiamo sempre in giardino le nostre cassettine di legno per ospitare qualche nido:  ricordo a tutti quelli di voi che volessero metterle,  che vanno accuratamente ripulite ogni primavera,  per non lasciare i residui dell’anno precedente.  Vanno tolti i vecchi nidi e spolverate,  senza usare prodotti,  ma solo con le mani guantate.

La notte dell’aurora boreale ha coinciso con la finale del concorso canoro European Song Contest.  Io l’ho seguito per curiosita’ (erano anni che non lo guardavo) e per restare sveglia e uscire a vedere se arrivava la benedetta aurora.  Devo dire che non e’ il mio genere:  il mio genere e’ una band che suona dal vivo,  con strumenti e sudore,  i cantanti che cantano dal vivo,  senza effetti speciali.  A parte questo,  ho trovato anche le canzoni un po’ inconsistenti.  Pero’ mi e’ piaciuto subito molto lo show e il brano del vincitore:  lo svizzero Nemo.  La sua performance su quel disco-trottola-altalena e’ stata semplice e geniale.  La canzone e’ accattivante e la voce all’altezza.  Senz’altro diverso ma spontaneo.  Non mi ha dato nessun fastidio vederlo in gonna:  in fin dei conti era una performance artistica e poi lui si e’ posto in maniera simpatica,  reclamando il suo posto nel mondo,  senza la violenza con cui lo hanno criticato taluni.  D’altronde artisti come lui trovano precursori in Renato Zero,  Boy George…  La performance di Angelina Mango invece e’ stata simile a molte altre.  Complimenti a lei per la voce, comunque.

Il titolo del giornale dice:  “Alzare il sedere e uscire con i figli!”  E’ un invito che ha fatto l’ Helsingin Sanomat alle famiglie che tendono alla sedentarieta’ e alla pigrizia.  Uscire a camminare/giocare con i figli serve all’unita’ famigliare e ad allontanare il pericolo del sovrappeso,  oltre che a far conoscere la natura…e da dove vengono prodotti come latte,  miele,  frutta.

L’appuntamento piu’ importante che ci attende prossimamente sono le elezioni europee.  Vorrei unirmi alla voce del presidente Mattarella per ricordare a tutti l’importanza del voto:  andiamo a votare,  esercitiamo il nostro diritto,  non diamo spazio alla noia,  all’inutile protesta e soprattutto se non andiamo,  non potremo dire di averci provato.  Inoltre il voto e’ in se’ un privilegio:  pensate ai popoli sottoposti a regime,  che pur volendo non possono.  Vorrei fare mie le parole di Nando Dalla Chiesa:  “Andate a votare,  perchè i mafiosi ci vanno sempre.  Non lasciate che si senta solo la loro voce!” Soprattutto   cerchiamo di documentarci sui candidati e scegliamone di competenti…e soprattutto che non siano assenteisti,  farlocchi e venditori d’aria fritta.

Anche perche’ il prossimo parlamento Europeo dovra’ vedere come proseguire nell’intricata situazione della guerra.  Bisogna arrivare ad una prospettiva di pace.  Ma come si fa la pace con questa Russia cosi’ aggressiva?  Con questa Russia che rompe tutti gli accordi internazionali?  Che non ha nemmeno ricevuto il cardinale Zuppi,  andato per negoziare?  Che vuole alterare a suo vantaggio il confine con l’Estonia?  Cosa gli si concede?  Putin ha detto che raggiungera’ i suoi obiettivi,  ma non ha mai dichiarato quali sono.  Gli basteranno le regioni annesse?  Vorra’ papparsi tutta l’Ucraina?  E gli ucraini,  vorranno essere pappati?  Sono davvero momenti difficili,  che mettono a dura prova le istituzioni.

Proseguono intanto i disturbi ai sistemi GPS nell’area del Baltico e oltre,   che ostacolano la navigazione aerea e marittima,  mettendo a repentaglio la sicurezza degli aerei e delle navi nella zona,  anche NATO e civili,  naturalmente.  Nel grafico seguente la situazione rilevata nei cieli finlandesi nel 2024,  con gli attacchi in sensibile aumento:  a sx i voli finlandesi,  a dx quelli internazionali.

Altre notizie spicciole:   La situazione finanziaria della Finlandia come Paese mostra un notevole rallentamento dell’inflazione,  una lenta ripresa,  ma un aumento del debito pubblico addirittura maggiore di tutti gli altri Paesi UE. 

Il settore turistico ha segnato una notevole flessione dallo scoppio della guerra.  Al momento il bilancio delle attivita’ turistiche dice che i finlandesi hanno viaggiato verso l’estero in maniera molto piu’ massiccia di quanto i turisti stranieri siano venuti qui,  provocando un passivo di quasi 3 miliardi di euro.

In Finlandia ci sono oltre 40 Parchi nazionali.

A Month in my Photos.

May was marked by a cold spell at the beginning of the month which brought below zero nights even to southern Finland,  fortunately nothing had bloomed yet:  I am referring to berries which are a valuable source of easy-to-get vitamins.   Blueberries and raspberries bloom at the end of May,  while other berries bloom later.

After a difficult start,  however,  the weather improved and all the nature that surrounds us has resumed its luxuriance:  it is amazing to see how quickly trees sprout new leaves and how little time it the new grass to appear in gardens.  Literally overnight. 

In mid-month summer burst out literally:  we had 26C and stable high pressure over Scandinavia.  We planted potatoes,  sowed carrots,  lettuce,  dill and spinach.  The first new potatoes will be ready in about 50 days and as you know they are an early produce  that the Finns cannot resist:  https://traitaliaefinlandia.com/2017/09/19/i-mangiatori-di-patate/

Even in Italy the whole May was cool with abundant rain and thunderstorms,  at least in northern Italy.

At the beginning of the month the sun produced a strong eruption which,  impacting our atmosphere,  generated a remarkable and very powerful Northern Lights:  it was in fact seen at very low latitudes,  even in Italy.  The paradox was that we didn’t see it because the nights were already too bright:  at 1.30 a.m. there was still light and at 4.30 a.m. it was already full daylight! If you then consider that the Aurora peak was expected at 9.00 in the morning and that…um…perhaps you prefer to sleep at night…well…then you just can’t see it. 😉

We’ll wait for the next one… it will definitely be back again.

The migratory birds have all arrived:  I also saw the Swallows and heard the Cuckoo sing.  Nobody is missing anymore.  Indeed,  someone is already dealing with the first brood.  We always have our wooden bird nest boxes in the garden to house some nests:  I remind all those of you who want to place them,  that they must be carefully cleaned every spring,  so as not to leave remains from the previous year.  Old nests must be removed and dusted,  without using products,  but only with gloved hands.

The night of the Northern Lights coincided with the final of the European Song Contest.  I followed it out of curiosity (I hadn’t watched it for years) and in order to stay awake and check if the Aurora would arrive.  I have to say that it’s not my genre:  my genre is a band that plays live,  with instruments and sweat,  singers who sing live,  without special effects.  Aside from that,  I also found the songs a bit inconsistent.  But I immediately liked the show and the winner’s song a lot:  the Swiss Nemo.  His performance on that disco-spinning-swing was simple and brilliant.  The song is catchy and his voice is ok.  Certainly different but spontaneous.  It didn’t bother me at all to see him in a skirt:  after all it was an artistic performance and then he posed himself in a nice way,  claiming his place in the world,  without the violence with which some criticized him.  On the other hand, artists like him find precursors in Renato Zero,  Boy George…  Angelina Mango’s performance,  instead,  was similar to many others.  Kudos to her on her voice,  though.

The newspaper headline in the above photo reads:  “Get off your butt and go out with your kids!”  It is an invitation that Helsingin Sanomat made to families who tend to be sedentary and lazy.  Going out to walk/play with your children helps family unity and wards off the danger of being overweight,  as well as raising awareness of nature and learn where milk,  honey and fruit come from.

The most important appointment that awaits us in the near future are the European elections.  I would like to join the voice of President Mattarella to remind everyone of the importance of voting:  let’s go and vote,  let’s exercise our right,  let’s not give space to boredom,  to useless protest and above all if we don’t go,  we won’t be able to say we did try.  Furthermore,  voting is in itself a privilege:  think of the people subjected to a regime,  who cannot,  even if they want to.  So let’s try to find out about the candidates and choose competent ones.  Last but not least:  they should not be absentees.

Also because the next European parliament will have to see how to proceed in the intricate situation of the war.  We need to arrive at a perspective of peace.  But how do we make peace with this aggressive Russia?  This Russia who breaks all international agreements?  Who didn’t even welcome Cardinal Zuppi,  sent by Pope Francis.  This Russia who wants to change the border lines with Estonia by own decision?  What can we allow to this Russia?  Putin said that he will achieve his goals,  but he has never cleared what they are.  Will the annexed regions be enough for him?  Will he want to eat up all of Ukraine?  And the Ukrainians,  will they want to be eaten up?   These are truly difficult times,  which will put the institutions to the test.

Meanwhile,  disturbances to GPS systems continue in the Baltic area and beyond,  hindering air and maritime navigation,  jeopardizing the safety of aircraft and ships in the area,  including NATO and civilians,  of course.  In the above graph the situation as seen in the Finnish sky in 2024,  with significantly increasing attacks:  on the left the Finnish flights,  on the right the international ones.

Other monthly tidbits:   Finland’s financial situation as a country shows a notable slowdown in inflation,  a slow improvement of the economy in general,  but an increase in public debt,  even greater than all other EU countries.

The tourism sector has seen a notable decline since the outbreak of the war.  At the moment the balance of tourist activities says that Finns have traveled abroad much more massively than foreign tourists have come here,  resulting in a deficit of almost 3 billion euros.

In Finland we have over 40 National parks.
