Il turista che si trova la domenica mattina a Barcellona,  città meravigliosa e vivace del nord della Spagna,  non si stupisca se vedrà radunarsi una gran folla nella piazza antistante la Cattedrale di Santa Eulalia:  i catalani infatti si ritrovano proprio lì per un rituale amatissimo:  ballare la Sardana.

La Sardana è un ballo antico,  inventato sembra nel XVI secolo quando gli spagnoli conquistarono la Sardegna (da cui il nome),  che si balla tutti in cerchio,  guardandosi e tenendosi per mano.  I passi sono semplicissimi e la musica piacevole,  per cui è molto facile farsi trascinare.  Il cerchio umano di ballerini si apre a tutti coloro che vogliono unirsi,  dando l’idea di inclusione e uguaglianza.  Naturalmente è un ballo adatto a tutte le età.

La Sardana fu proibita in epoca franchista poichè associata all’identità culturale Catalana,  essendo un ballo rappresentativo di questa regione.

A proposito:  in un bel mattino di febbraio 1998 anche una turista italiana si unì ad uno dei cerchi e provò con gusto a ballare la Sardana.

The Sardana.

The tourist who finds himself on Sunday morning in Barcelona,  the wonderful and lively city in northern Spain,  should not be surprised if he sees a large crowd gathering in the square in front of the Cathedral of Santa Eulàlia:  the Catalans in fact meet right there for a much-loved ritual:  dance the Sardana.

The Sardana is an ancient dance,  apparently invented in the 16th century when the Spanish conquered Sardinia (hence the name).  It is danced in a circle,  with everybody facing inwards and holding hands.  The steps are very simple and the music is pleasant,  so it’s very easy to get carried away.  The human circle of dancers opens up to all who want to join,  giving the idea of inclusion and equality. Of course it is a dance suitable for all ages.

The Sardana was prohibited in the Franco era as it was associated with the Catalan cultural identity,  being a representative dance of this region of Spain.

Just for you to know:  on a bright morning in February 1998 an Italian tourist joined the circle and took a few joyful steps of Sardana.
