La bella Basilica di San Domenico,  in Arezzo,  è fra i più importanti edifici sacri della città.  Costuita tra il XIII e il XIV secolo,  essa affaccia sulla piazza omonima e vanta una facciata gotica asimmetrica con il campanile collocato sulla parte destra.

L’interno è a navata singola ed è completamente affrescato con rappresentazioni della vita di Gesù e dei Santi,  per lo più ad opera degli artisti Spinello Aretino e del figlio Parri.

Nella foto sopra,  la cappella Dragondelli,  un’edicola in stile gotico realizzata nel 1368,  reca all’interno un affresco raffigurante Gesù giovanetto che disserta con i dottori del Tempio.

Ma il vero pezzo forte della chiesa,  dal punto di vista artistico,  è questo crocifisso dipinto da Cimabue che si trova all’altare maggiore.  Si tratta di un’opera giovanile del pittore fiorentino.

Lo stile di questo crocifisso è molto particolare:  pur ispirandosi ad un’opera preesistente che si trova a Bologna,  Cimabue riesce con alcune furbizie pittoriche a rendere maggiormente l’idea del Cristo sofferente.  Il corpo è molto arcuato e i muscoli sono accentuati,  per creare un effetto dinamico e prospettico nuovo,  rispetto alla pittura dell’epoca.  Anche il volto di Cristo è dipinto con dovizia di particolari e sfumature,  che guadagna all’opera una acuta drammaticità.

Anche il soffitto a capriate è molto particolare.

The beautiful Basilica of San Domenico,  in the Tuscan town Arezzo,  is among the most important local sacred buildings.  Built between the 13th and 14th centuries,  it overlooks the square of the same name and boasts an asymmetric Gothic façade with the bell tower located on the right side.

The interior has a single nave and is completely frescoed with representations of the life of Jesus and the Saints,  mostly by artists Spinello Aretino and his son Parri.

In my 5th photo,  the Dragondelli chapel,  a Gothic style aedicule built in 1368,  has a fresco inside depicting young Jesus discussing with the doctors of the Temple.

But the real masterpiece in the church,  from an artistic point of view,  is this huge crucifix painted by Florentine painter Cimabue which is located at the main altar.  It is an early work by Cimabue.

The style of this crucifix is very special:  despite being inspired by a pre-existing work found  in Bologna,  Cimabue manages with some pictorial craft to better convey the idea of the suffering Christ.  The body is very arched and the muscles are enhanced,  in order to create a new dynamic and perspective effect,  compared to the painting of the time.  Even the face of Christ is painted with plentiful amounts of details and nuances,  which gives the work a somber gravity.

The trussed ceiling is remarkable too.

  20. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful example of Italian architecture. I love the incredible detail especially the beautiful open ceiling using such care to create a place that is so special to worship in.
