Buona domenica a tutti!

Oggi vi propongo una curiosità a proposito dei nomi di persona finlandesi,  partendo proprio dal nome di mio marito:  Risto.

Il nome Risto corrisponde al nome italiano:  Cristoforo,  o se preferite alle sue variazioni europee:  Kristo,  Christo,  Krister,  Christopher,  Christoffer,  Kristopher,  Kristoffer,  Chris,  Kris… a loro volta originate dal greco:  Khristoforos,  che significa:  “Portatore di Cristo”.

Chi porta questo nome festeggia l’onomastico il 15 marzo secondo il calendario finlandese.  Nel calendario finlandese tuttavia non vi è il Santo del giorno,  come da noi,  perchè la religione Luterana seguita in Finlandia non compendia i Santi;  il calendario riporta solo il nome del giorno,  che è comunque un retaggio cattolico,  dai tempi in cui la Finlandia era parte della cattolicissima Svezia.

Today I will share with you a fun fact about Finnish personal names,  starting from my husband’s name:  Risto.

The name Risto corresponds to the British name:  Christopher and to its European variations:  Kristo,  Christo,  Krister,   Christoffer,  Kristopher,  Kristoffer,  Chris,  Kris… (Cristoforo in Italian),  in turn originating from the Greek:  Khristoforos,  which means: “Bearer of Christ”.

Who bears this name celebrates the name day on March 15th according to the Finnish calendar.  However,  in the Finnish calendar there is no “Saint of the day”,  because the Lutheran religion followed in Finland does not include Saints;  the calendar shows only the name of the day,  which is in any case a Catholic heritage,  from the times when Finland was part of Catholic Sweden.

  4. I understand that the calendar in your photos is Swedish, not Finnish.
    And you say ” the name of the day, which is in any case a Catholic heritage”. That’s unusual, as names of the days of the week, if they have any religious background at all , are mainly of some pagan origin (Sunday being a common exception).

  20. Oops, sorry for not being so clear in my post: the calendar shown is Finnish. The human names printed on every day of the calendar are just common names, not Saints’ names, as in our Italian Catholic tradition.
    Although the fact of remembering different names every day is due to Swedish influence.
