Nelle mie foto di oggi vi mostro quattro decori bellissimi che talvolta si possono vedere sulle facciate delle case italiane:  le meridiane.

Sono dipinti che mostrano l’ora solare proiettando l’ombra di uno gnomone (un’asta metallica) su un quadrante.  Spesso riportano anche frasi,  massime,  proverbi,  o semplicemente illustrazioni,  vedute,  allegorie.

Le quattro di oggi le ho tutte fotografate nella regione Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Le prime due sopra hanno un retrogusto patriottico:  ricordano l’entrata dell’esercito italiano a liberare Trento e Trieste dal dominio austro-ungarico il 3 novembre 1918,  al trmine della I guerra mondiale.

Questa terza e’ piuttosto romantica;  la frase dice:  “Fin che ‘l sol se leva,  infiora ‘l mondo”,  che io interpreto come:  “Finche’ abbiamo la luce del sole,  abbiamo fiori,  piante e vita”.

Su quest’ultima non v’e’ dubbio:  “Il tempo e’ sapore”,  riferito all’invecchiamento necessario per alcuni prodotti della terra come vino,  formaggi,  prosciutti…

CURIOSITA’:   Le meridiane per ovvi motivi climatici in Finlandia non si usano dipinte sulle case,  ma come decoro da giardino in metallo:

Friulian Sundials.

In my photos today,  I will show you four beautiful decorations that can sometimes be seen on the facades of Italian houses:  sundials.

They are paintings that indicate the time of day by the position of the shadow cast by a gnomon (a metal rod) onto a dial.  Often they also contain phrases,  aphorisms,  proverbs,  or simply pictures,  views,  allegories.

I photographed today’s four in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

The first two above have a patriotic aftertaste:  they recall the entry of the Italian army to free the cities of Trento and Trieste from Austro-Hungarian rule on November 3,  1918,  at the end of World War I.

This third one is rather romantic;  the words say:  “As long as the sun rises,  it puts flowers on the world”,  which I interpret as:  “As long as we have sunlight,  we have flowers,  plants and life”.

There is no doubt about the latter:  “Time is flavour”,  referred to the seasoning necessary for some products of the earth such as wine,  cheese,  ham…

A FUN FACT:   For obvious climatic reasons,  in Finland sundials are not so much seen painted on houses,  but as metal garden decorations.  In my very final shot you can see what I mean.

  19. I remember being very impressed when I first learned about sundials, and I still think it’s impressive that humans came up with this way to measure time. I particularly like the saying “As long as the sun rises, it puts flowers on the world.”

  20. Very cool shots- sundials are fascinating! I think I saw the top one during my visit to Trieste( wonderful city!) during my visit there in May ( or at least one very similar) . Thanks for sharing the post. Keep up the good work!
