Navigazione sul Mincio.

*please scroll down for English version*Appena dopo Mantova, precisamente nel paesino di Grazie, si trova il Santuario di Madonna delle Grazie, da cui il paesino stesso prende il nome. Ma il soggetto del post di oggi non e’ il Santuario, bensi’ l’area che lo circonda.

Proprio dal porticciolo dietro il Santuario infatti partono i battelli fluviali che effettuano giri turistici lungo il fiume Mincio, il fiume di Mantova, alla scoperta degli angoli piu’ belli del territorio. Il Mincio e’ un emissario del lago di Garda che arrivando a Mantova forma tre laghetti, ci quali sono stati dichiarati area protetta a hanno preso il nome di: Riserva Naturale delle Valli del Mincio.

La navigazione (gestita dalla societa’ di Barcaioli del Mincio), dura un’ora circa e ci porta ad osservare la natura rigogliosa che si sviluppa in questa zona: si incontrano volatili gia’ conosciuti come cigni e anatre, ma anche aironi cinerini e rossi, molto piu’ rari.

Ma la parte piu’ pittoresca ed esotica della navigazione e’ senz’altro quella che porta ad osservare lo sbocciare dei Fiori di Loto, che avviene nei mesi di luglio e agosto. Questi fiori non sono certo autoctoni, ma si sono ben ambientati nei fondali talvolta melmosi della Riserva.

I fiori di Loto furono importati in Italia agli inizi del ‘900 dalla botanica Maria Pellegreffi per ragioni di studio, ma si diffusero enormemente, essendo una specie resistente. Oggi le migliaia di piante di Loto sono praticamente infestanti e devono essere tenute sotto controllo per non soffocare la vegetazione locale, cio’ non toglie che la loro fioritura e’ spettacolare.

CURIOSITA’: i fiori di Loto si caratterizzano per l’elevata idrorepellenza delle foglie, che e’ stata studiata nella produzione di alcuni materiali.

Concludendo, un giro in battello sul Mincio nella stagione estiva e’ un modo gradevole per impiegare un pomeriggio nella natura vicina.

Along the Mincio River.

Just after the city of Mantua, in the north of Italy, precisely in the village of Grazie, is the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie, from which the village itself takes its name. The subject of today’s post is not the Sanctuary, anyway, but the area that surrounds it.

In fact, at the small harbour behind the Sanctuary you will find the starting point of local river boats which organize tourist tours along the Mincio river, the Mantua river, to discover the most beautiful corners of the area. As an emissary of Lake Garda, upon its arrival in Mantua, the Mincio river forms three small lakes, which have been declared a protected area and have taken the name of Valli del Mincio Nature Reservoir.

The navigation (managed by the Barcaioli del Mincio company), lasts about an hour and guides you to observe the luxuriant nature that develops in this area: you’ll meet birds already known as swans and ducks, but also Gray and Purple herons, much rarer.

The most picturesque and exotic part of the navigation is undoubtedly viewing the blossoming of the Lotus flowers, which takes place in the months of July and August. These flowers are certainly not native, but they have adapted well to the sometimes muddy seabed of the Reservoir.

Lotus flowers were imported into Italy in the early 1900s by the botanist Maria Pellegreffi for study reasons, but they spread enormously, being a resistant species. Today the thousands of Lotus plants are considered weeds and must be kept under control so as not to suffocate the local vegetation. Although their flowering is spectacular.

FUN FACT: Lotus flowers are characterized by the high water repellency of the leaves, which has been studied in the production of some materials.

In conclusion, a boat ride on the Mincio in the summer season is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon in the nearby nature.
