Nella vasta e scenografica Piazza Unità d’Italia,  nel centro di Trieste,  si trova lo storico Caffè degli Specchi.  Fondato nel 1839,  è stato sempre il salotto buono della città,  luogo d’incontro di intellettuali,  letterati,  commercianti,  ufficiali:  ai tavoli del Caffè degli Specchi hanno indugiato James Joyce,  Franz Lehar e nel secondo dopoguerra gli ufficiali della Marina britannica.

L’atmosfera evocata da questo elegante Caffè inserito in un bel palazzo neoclassico,  ci riporta al passato mitteleuropeo,  financo asburgico,  della città di Trieste,  per secoli crocevia di scambi culturali e commerciali con l’Europa dell’est in particolare.

Fra le altre cose,  noi abbiamo assaggiato l’insolito strudel all’arancia.

CURIOSITA’:  Caffè e cappuccino vengono sempre serviti accompagnati da un bicchierino di cioccolata.

The Caffè degli Specchi.

The historic Caffè degli Specchi is located in the vast and scenic Piazza Unità d’Italia,  in the center of Trieste,  capital town of the region:  Friuli Venezia Giulia,  in the north-east of Italy.

Founded in 1839,  it has always been the city’s living room,  a meeting place for intellectuals,  scholars,  traders,  officers:  James Joyce and Franz Lehar lingered at the tables of the Caffè degli Specchi and after World War II even British Navy officers.

The atmosphere in this elegant café located in a beautiful neoclassical building takes us back to the Central European,  Habsburg-like past of the city of Trieste,  which has been for centuries a crossroads of cultural and commercial exchanges with Eastern Europe in particular.

Among other things,  we tasted their special strudel with orange preserve.

A FUN FACT:  Coffee and cappuccino are always served accompanied by a glass of chocolate.

  39. what?? Coffee and cappuccino are always served accompanied by a glass of chocolate?? how cool is that! in Brussels they refuse to serve you tap water with coffee, let alone anything else.
    ps. Trieste is a nice town. have to have a cappuccino there next time.

  40. How funny, in Brussels not even water with coffee, whereas in Vienna it is compulsory and then you can remain in the café all the time you like with your glass of water! Trieste is halfway. Welcome to try it, Klara! 😊

  45. Fantastic city with such an interesting history! A long way from New Zealand but worth the journey.I put up a couple of pictures myself a few weeks ago and look forward to anything else you post about the city. Always enjoy your descriptions of Finland and Italy!
