Tra Italia e Finlandia

L’isola di Malta,  situata al centro del mar Mediterraneo,  vanta una lunga storia.  A causa della sua posizione strategica e’ stata popolata da numerose civilta’ che hanno lasciato la loro impronta nella cultura locale:  Fenici,  Cartaginesi,  Greci,  Romani,  Arabi,  Cavalieri di San Giovanni,  Francesi e Inglesi si sono succeduti nel corso dei secoli.  Le tracce di questa lunga storia di conquiste,  guerre,  ma anche scambi culturali,  economici e migrazioni umane,  si trovano ovunque.

Nella foto sopra:  il Grand Harbour,  il porto principale di Malta,  situato nella capitale La Valletta,  visto dai giardini sui bastioni.  La scritta di arbusti significa:  benvenuti.

Nella foto qui sotto invece,  parte delle mura fortificate di La Valletta,  che in molti punti offrono scorci e vedute molto suggestive,  attraverso le torri di avvistamento.  A Malta si trovano numerosi forti,  cittadelle,  torrioni,  baluardi,  poiche’ ovviamente la difesa era una necessita’ primaria per un’isola cosi’ piccola e che faceva gola a molti.

Oggi Malta e’ conosciuta soprattutto come meta turistica.  Indubbiamente il clima e’ favorevolissimo:  le estati sono calde e secche,  mentre gli inverni sono tiepidi e piu’ piovosi.  Le strutture ricettive non mancano e nemmeno l’enorme numero di turisti che la scelgono per le proprie vacanze.  Nella mia foto:  la spiaggia di Golden Sands,  situata in una delle tante baie pittoresche dell’isola.  Il colore dorato della sabbia e’ dovuto all’origine tufacea.

Malta e’ anche vita normale,  non solo turistica.  Nelle mie foto la citta’ di Sliema,  la piu’ popolata delle citta’ di Malta.  Centro residenziale e commerciale,  Sliema e’ attiva e sempre in fermento:  giorno e notte,  dato che anche la vita notturna non manca.   Il nome di Sliema significa:  pace.

A Sliema sono concentrate varie scuole di lingua,  in cui si puo’ perfezionare il proprio inglese.  Forti dei 200 anni trascorsi sotto la dominazione britannica infatti,  i cittadini di Malta vantano un inglese fluente.   L’Inglese e’ la seconda lingua ufficiale,  dopo il Maltese.  A Malta quindi si puo’ programmare una vacanza-studio,  abbinando lo studio della lingua all’abbronzatura.  A Malta comunque si parla moltissimo anche italiano.Malta si estende su un’area di 316kmq e ha 515.000 abitanti.  Oggi e’ una repubblica indipendente,  fa parte dell’Unione Europea e dell’area Euro.

La religione piu’ professata e’ la Cattolica,  che e’ religione di stato.  I maltesi sono orgogliosi di raccontarvi che sulla loro isola ci sono piu’ di 360 chiese:  praticamente una per ogni giorno dell’anno.

A small, big Island.

Malta,  located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea,  has a long history.  Due to its strategic position it has been populated by numerous civilizations that have left their mark on the local culture:  Phoenicians, Carthaginians,  Greeks,  Romans,  Arabs,  Knights of St. John,  French and British have followed one another over the centuries.  The traces of this long history of conquests,  wars,  but also cultural,  economic and human migration exchanges can be found everywhere.

Pictured above:  the Grand Harbor,  Malta’s main port,  located in the capital city Valletta,  seen from the  gardens on top of the bastions.  The inscription made of shrubs means:  welcome.

In the photo below instead,  part of the fortified walls of Valletta,  which in many points offer very suggestive glimpses and views,  through the watchtowers.  In Malta there are numerous forts,  citadels,  towers,  bulwarks,  since the defense was a primary necessity for such a small island which was desirable for various powers.

Today Malta is known above all as a tourist destination.   Its climate is very favorable:  summers are hot and dry,  while winters are warm and sometimes rainy.  Everywhere in Malta you will find innumerable accommodation facilities and recreational areas;  a huge number of tourists choose it for their holidays every year.  In my photo:  Golden Sands beach,  located in one of the many picturesque bays of the island.  The golden colour of the sand is due to the tuff rock where it comes from.

Malta means also normal life,  of course.  In my photos the city of Sliema, the most populated of the cities of Malta.  Sliema is an active residential and commercial center always bursting with life:  day and night,  as nightlife is rather hectic too.  Sliema’s name means:  peace.

Various language schools are concentrated in Sliema,  there you can improve your English.  The inhabitants of Malta boast fluent English after their 200 years as members of the British Commonwealth.  English is the second official language:  the first is Maltese.  In Malta,  therefore,  you can plan a study holiday,  combining the study of the language with a tan. However,  a lot of Italian is spoken as well.

Malta covers an area of 316 sq km and has 515,000 inhabitants.  Today it is an independent republic,  part of the European Union and the Euro area. 

The most professed religion is the Catholic, which is the state religion.  The Maltese are proud to tell you that on their island there are more than 360 churches:  practically one for every day of the year.
