Il Circolo Polare Artico e’ uno dei paralleli di riferimento dell’asse terrestre insieme al Circolo Polare Antartico e all’ Equatore.  La Finlandia e’ attraversata dal Circolo Polare Artico proprio all’estremo sud della regione Lapponia,  appena fuori la citta’ di Rovaniemi e proprio sul Circolo i finlandesi hanno costruito questo monumento,  con tanto di dati scientifici e didascalie.

Curiosita’:  il Circolo Polare Artico in finnico si chiama:  NAPAPIIRI.

Proprio qui si trovano anche la residenza di Babbo Natale,  una serie di piccoli negozietti caratteristici,  bar,  ristoranti e l’ufficio postale ufficiale dove arrivano le letterine dei bimbi di tutto il mondo.  Poteva mancare una ragazza curiosa??

IMG_2665Queste foto le abbiamo scattate a inizio settembre,  durante il nostro viaggio in Lapponia.  Come potete immaginare,  purtroppo nell’anno del Corona-disastro i turisti erano veramente pochi;  solitamente questo posto e’ sempre gremito di gente,  estate e inverno:  bambini entusiasti,  pullman di stranieri,  turisti affamati di selfie…  Addirittura molti negozi erano chiusi,  l’ufficio postale stesso era chiuso,  l’Husky Park era chiuso e pure il parco giochi esterno e ovviamente anche l’enorme Santapark,  il parco divertimenti sotterraneo costruito pochissimi anni fa.

The Arctic Circle is an important circle of latitude on the Earth map,  together with the Antarctic Circle and the Equator.   The Arctic Circle crosses the Finnish territory just at the southern point of the Lapland region,  just above the city of Rovaniemi.  In order to signpost the Arctic Circle,  the Finns have built a huge landmark (grown larger and larger through the years),  with a few scientific information.

As seen from the Arctic, the Sun is above the horizon or 24 continuous hours at least once per year and therefore below the horizon for 24 continuous hours at least once per year.

Just for info:  the Arctic Circle in Finnish is called  NAPAPIIRI.

Along with the Circle monument,  you will find a tourist area well equipped with small quaint shops,  bars,  restaurants and refreshment places.  Even Santa’s office as well as the official Post Office where children send their letters from all over the world are here.   Could a curious little girl miss it??

As a matter of fact,  I took these shots during our recent trip to Lapland in September.  As you can imagine,  tourists were really few due to the Corona-disaster;   this place is usually crowded in winter as well as in summer:  joyful children,  foreigners from every country ever,  tourists buses,  people trying to get the best selfie… Several structures were closed:  some shops,  the Post office,  the Husky Park,  the outdoor playground and the Santapark,  the big underground amusement park.

In the shot video you can appreciate the place and atmosphere.

  1. Curioso che la scritta in terra sia in Italiano, o è scritta in tutte le lingue? E poi finalmente sappiamo che significa il nome di quella marca di abbigliamento. Sulla poca gente, invece vorrà dire che dovrai tornarci quando tutto questo sarà finito!

  6. Buongiorno Giac! La scritta è in parecchie lingue. Ti dirò di più: la famosa marca di abbigliamento ha una J al posto della doppia I, forse per non dover pagare diritti… Ci tornerò volentieri alla fine di questo incubo. 🙂 Buon weekend a te!

    Lapland and the Arctic Circle look like a fun place to visit. It is a shame Covid has stopped many people from traveling. I like the sign with all the cities. Hopefully we all feel safe to travel again soon. Enjoy your day, have a great weekend!

    I have visited the Arctic Circle a long time ago and never the Santa Claus Office. It was very interesting to see the architectural features of the buildings… and compare them to the Santa’s Office of my imagination.
    Yes, I must say I found the brand Napapijri somewhat irritating, especially with the Norwegian flag. 😀

  37. Ho superato il circolo polare artico con l’Hurtigruten nel secolo scorso e non è un caso che sia capitata tempo fa qui da te. Il Nord mi attrae indicibilmente, pur essendo nata a latitudini mediterranee..
