Tra Italia e Finlandia

“E’ una verita’ universalmente riconosciuta…”  inizia cosi’ il famosissimo e amatissimo romanzo “Orgoglio e pregiudizio” di Jane Austen;  io mi prendo questo incipit per dire:  “E’ una verità universalmente riconosciuta che la Vanessa occhio di pavone  sia la piu’ bella tra le farfalle”.

E’ anche una delle piu’ conosciute,  anche da chi non si interessa a questi insetti,  a causa dei cerchi sulle ali che lei apre per difendersi dai predatori,  fingendo che siano i suoi occhi e dando l’impressione di essere un grosso mostro,  data la distanza fra di essi. Il suo nome viene dalla sacerdotessa Io,  dalla splendente bellezza  (Aglais Io).

Quando la si vede dal vivo e da vicino,  come tutte le farfalle,  è ancora piu’ splendida:  i colori sulle ali sembrano stesi col pennello da un grande pittore,  sono lucenti e vividi.  Il motivo di questo splendore è che le ali delle farfalle sono costituite di minuscole scaglie cornee che riflettono la luce in maniera del tutto particolare.

E’ presente in quasi tutta Europa;  in Finlandia arriva come migratrice facendosi portare dalle correnti calde.  Si chiama:  Neitoperhonen.

The most Beautiful.   

“It is a truth universally acknowledged…”  so starts Jane Austin’s famous masterpiece “Pride and Prejudice”;  but I will borrow this start to say:  “It is a truth universally acknowledged that the Peacock butterfly (Aglais Io) is the most beautiful of all”. 

It is the most famous as well;  even people who are not interested in butterflies remember the story of the eyespots on its wings,  which look like a monster’s eyes and scare predators who come across it.  It is named after the radiant beauty of the mythological priestess Io.  The most striking feature of this butterfly,  and of all butterflies when seen live and close,  is that the colours on the wings seem brilliant and vivid as laid by the brush of a great painter;  the reason is the way itself the wings of these animals are made:  with many  chitonous layers,  reflecting light in a unique way. 

This butterfly is widespread all over Europe,  but it arrives to Finland taking chance of warm air streams.  In Finnish it is called:  Neitoperhonen.
