Tutti gli animali hanno le loro strategie per resistere nel crudo inverno nordico:  alcuni uccelli si fanno crescere del soffice piumino;  gli ungulati se ne stanno stretti stretti nel folto del bosco al riparo il piu’ possibile e ricominciano a spostarsi quando la primavera e’ vicina.

Il bellissimo Merlo acquaiolo,  invece,  e’ proprio temerario:  cibandosi di insetti acquatici e loro larve,  piccoli molluschi e crostacei nonche’ uova di pesci,  si tuffa nelle gelide acque dei torrenti senza paura.  Lui non migra in inverno,  semplicemente si sposta un po’ piu’ a sud,  dove sa che i torrenti non sono gelati.

In the Snow.

All animals have their own strategies for resisting in the harsh Nordic winter: many birds grow soft down;  ungulates find shelter and stay quietly in the thick of the forest as much as possible close to each other and start moving again when spring is near. 

The beautiful Dipper,  on the other hand,  is truly fearless:  feeding on aquatic insects and their larvae,  small mollusks and crustaceans,  as well as fish eggs,  it dives fearlessly into the icy waters of streams.  It doesn’t migrate in winter;  it simply moves a little further south,  where it knows the streams aren’t frozen.
