  17. When we first moved to Germany in the early 1970’s, our landlady talked about the windows of a house being it’s “eyes” as it looked out into the world. That was followed by a lecture on how important it was to keep those “eyes” clean and filled with flowers!

    We tried to take that lesson with us everywhere we have lived.

Back in the days of our Rintamamiestalo remodel, we stumbled upon a Finnish publication of collected images and details of hundreds of window and trim examples from throughout the country for the last two hundred years or so. Examples ranged from the quite elaborate to the most humble. While this was not much of a surprise, the historical examples were truly lovely – no two were exactly alike. While the houses may have been somewhat similar in shape and design, the windows and trim were areas to impart personal influences. Craftsman of those eras permitted greater expressions of style through their expertise and skill. So, for us, despite being in a modern construction period where anything could be had, it was again a reminder how some things are just not so easily attainable. The examples within your post are wonderful examples and are representative of what was included in the publication we discovered! Thanks for your post and the little jog down memory lane 🙂
