Tra Italia e Finlandia

Nella bellissima Piazza Syntagma,  nel cuore di Atene,  ogni ora i soldati Euzoni fanno il cambio della guardia.  La cerimonia e’ particolarmente scenografica poiche’ i soldati si muovono seguendo uno schema rigido ma con movimenti flessuosi,  come al rallentatore.

Naturalmente sono perfettamente sincronizzati,  frutto di addestramento serio e senso del controllo.  I soldati Euzoni sono un corpo speciale dell’esercito ellenico,  fanno parte della Guardia Presidenziale.  Essi hanno il compito di sorvegliare il Palazzo Presidenziale e il parlamento.

Questa particolare cerimonia e’ una grande attrattiva turistica. Una cerimonia di cambio della guardia in grande stile con oltre 100 soldati presenti,  si celebra invece la domenica mattina.

Le uniformi degli Euzoni sono tradizionali e sono composte da vari elementi ricchi di simboli:  il gonnellino ad esempio,  che si chiama “fustanella”,  porta quattrocento pieghe,  tante quanti sono stati gli anni in cui la Grecia e’ stata sotto l’impero ottomano.  Il copricapo invece si chiama “phareon” e il suo colore rosso rappresenta il sangue dei soldati caduti,  mentre la nappa nera che lo adorna rappresenta le lacrime delle famiglie dei caduti.

Changing of the Guard.

In the beautiful Syntagma Square,  in the heart of Athens,  every hour the Evzones soldiers perform the changing of the guard.  The ceremony is particularly spectacular because the soldiers move following a rigid pattern but with supple movements,  as if in slow motion.  Of course they are perfectly synchronized,  as a result of serious training and a sense of control.

The Evzones soldiers are a special corps of the Hellenic army,  they are part of the Presidential Guard.  They are responsible for guarding the Presidential Palace and the Parliament.  This particular ceremony is a great tourist attraction.

The uniforms of the Evzones are traditional and are composed of various elements rich in symbols:  the skirt for example,  which is called “fustanella”,  has four hundred pleats,  as many as the years in which Greece was under the Ottoman Empire.  The headdress instead is called “phareon” and its red color represents the blood of the fallen soldiers,  while the black tassel that adorns it represents the tears of the families of the fallen.
