Tra Italia e Finlandia

Pur non essendo ufficiale,  qualcuno potrebbe pensare che il gatto e’ l’animale simbolo di Riga.   La bella capitale lettone infatti sciorina rappresentazioni di questo animale in piu’ punti del proprio centro storico.

Tutto inizio’ probabilmente dal gatto che vedete nelle foto sopra,  collocato sulla torretta di un grazioso edificio liberty che fatalmente venne chiamato:  “La Casa del Gatto”.   Narra la leggenda che al proprietario fu negata l’appartenenza alla Camera di Commercio e che per vendetta egli abbia fatto installare l’animale in spregio.  (Veramente le torrette sono due e i gatti sono due).

C’e’ un’altra casa nella citta’ vecchia di Riga che ostenta altri due bei felini,  ma non saprei dirvi se sono ispirati alla Casa del Gatto o meno.  Comunque molto carini:

Un simpatico gattone fa mostra di se’ in prossimita’ della “Casa delle Teste Nere”,  sempre nella citta’ vecchia,  ma e’ un punto di ritrovo per i turisti.

Infine,  una delle banderuole piu’ graziose che abbia visto,  sventolava sul tetto di una casa a Jurmala,  la spiaggia di Riga.

Cats of Riga.

Although it is not official,  someone might think that the cat is the symbolic animal of Riga.  The beautiful Latvian capital in fact displays representations of this animal in several places in its old center.  

It all probably started with the cat you see in the first photos above,  placed on the turret of a pretty Art Nouveau building that was inevitably called:  “The Cat House”.   Legend has it that the owner was denied membership in the Chamber of Commerce and that in revenge he had the animal installed in contempt.   (Actually there are two turrets and two cats).

There is another house in Riga’s old town that boasts two more cute cats,  but I can’t tell you if they are inspired by the Cat House or not.  Very cute though.

A friendly cat shows itself near the “House of the Blackheads”,  still in the old town,  but it is a meeting point for tourists.

Finally,  one of the prettiest weathervanes I have ever seen was fluttering on the roof of a house in Jurmala,  Riga’s seaside town.
