Tra Italia e Finlandia

I teneri e bellissimi uccellini del post di oggi sono i Codibugnoli  (Aegithalos caudatus),  minuscoli uccellini passeriformi della lunghezza di soli 13-16cm (di cui circa 2 terzi costituiscono la coda) e del peso di soli 6-10 grammi.

I Codibugnoli sono diffusi in tutta l’Eurasia,  fino alla Siberia e alla Corea.  Essi vivono nei boschi e si nutrono principalmente di insetti e larve,  che trovano spulciando letteralmente tronchi e rami degli alberi.

Non vi meravigli sapere che questi piccoli uccellini sono stanziali in Finlandia:  essi sopravvivono bene nel folto dei boschi in tutte le stagioni.

Io ho molte foto dei Codibugnoli,  perche’ qualche inverno si sono fermati da noi sporadicamente a cercare cibo alle nostre mangiatoie:  essi infatti si adattano a mangiare granaglie nei periodi di scarsita’ di insetti.

Come dicevo,  si sono fermati da noi solo sporadicamente qualche inverno,  perche’ generalmente se la cavano bene spostandosi in gruppi all’interno dei boschi nella ricerca di cibo.

E qui veniamo ad un altro aspetto tipico di questa specie:  essi vivono in stormi composti da svariati individui e si muovono seguendo le indicazioni del capo-stormo.  Si fermano per pochissimo tempo in una singola zona del bosco,  su un singolo albero:  ben presto il capo da’ l’ordine di ripartenza e tutti lo seguono,  tenendosi sempre in contatto sonoro fra di loro.

Adesso,  in inverno,  gli unici richiami che si sentono camminando nei boschi sono proprio le voci dei Codibugnoli e di qualche sparuto Ciuffolotto.

Il Codibugnolo in finnico si chiama:  Pyrstötiainen,  dove “pyrstö” significa proprio:  “coda”.

Sweet Long-tailed Tits!

The cute and beautiful birds in today’s post are the Long-tailed Tits (Aegithalos caudatus),  tiny passerine birds measuring only 13-16cm long (of which about 2/3 is the tail) and weighing only 6-10 grams. 

Long-tailed Tits are widespread throughout Eurasia,  as far as Siberia and Korea.  They live in the woods and feed mainly on insects and larvae,  which they find by literally scavenging tree trunks and branches. 

Don’t be surprised to hear that these little birds are resident in Finland:  they survive well in the thick of the woods in all seasons.

I have many photos of Long-tailed Tits,  because some winters they have stopped by us sporadically to look for food at our feeders:  in fact they adapt to eating grains in periods of insect scarcity.

As I was saying,  they have stopped by us sporadically some winters,  because generally they do well moving in groups inside the woods in search of food.

And here we come to another typical aspect of this species:  they live in flocks made up of several individuals and move following the indications of their leader.  They stop for a very short time in a single area of ​​the woods,  on a single tree:  soon the leader gives the order to leave again and they all follow him,  always keeping in sound contact with each other.

Now,  in winter,  the only calls you hear walking in the woods are the voices of the Long-tailed Tits and occasionally Bullfinches. 

The Long-tailed Tit in Finnish is called:  Pyrstötiainen,  where “pyrstö” means precisely: “tail”.
