Cari lettori,  oggi vi porto a scoprire una chiesa medievale in pietra molto suggestiva e pittoresca.  Si trova su una collinetta che domina il paese di Halikko,  non lontano da Salo e nemmeno da Somero.

Questa chiesa fu edificata nella meta’ del secolo XIII ed e’ una delle 100 chiese medievali che abbiamo in Finlandia.  In origine era una chiesa Cattolica ed era dedicata a Santa Brigida di Svezia,  ma con l’avvento della Riforma protestante,  la chiesa fu rivestita di calce e ogni riferimento alla religione Cattolica ando’ perduto.

La chiesa fu rimaneggiata piu’ volte nel corso dei secoli,  vi fu aggiunta una pittoresca torre campanaria e attorno al 1815 vi presto’ la sua opera anche l’architetto finlandese ma di origini italiane Charles Bassi,  rappresentante della corrente Neoclassica.

Oggi la chiesa di Halikko si presenta ampia (ha la capienza di 800 persone),  luminosa e in perfette condizioni.  Nel prossimo post vedremo l’interno.

Come detto,  questa bella chiesa domina il paese e dalla collina dove si trova la vista spazia su campi e foreste.  All’esterno della chiesa come sempre si trova il camposanto.

Halikko Church  #1.

Dear readers,  today I will take you to discover a very suggestive and picturesque medieval stone church.  It is located on a hill overlooking the village of Halikko,  not far from Salo and not even from Somero.

This church was built in the middle of the 13th century and is one of the 100 medieval churches that we have in Finland.  It was originally a Catholic church and was dedicated to Saint Bridget of Sweden,  but with the advent of the Protestant Reformation,  the church was covered in lime and every reference to the Catholic religion was lost. 

The church was remodeled several times over the centuries,  a picturesque belfry was added and around 1815 the Finnish architect of Italian descent Charles Bassi,  representative of the Neoclassical movement,  also worked there.

Today the church of Halikko is large (it has a capacity of 800 people), bright and in perfect condition. In the next post we will see the interior.

As mentioned,  this beautiful church dominates the town and from the hill where it is located the view extends over fields and forests.  Outside the church,  as always,  there is the cemetery.
