Romantic Rauma!

As mentioned in my previous post,  Rauma is a beautiful city on the west coast of Finland,  about a hundred kilometers north of Turku.  Founded in 1442 on a pre-existing urban center,  Rauma has always played a leading role in naval trade,  sending its ships to Sweden,  but also to Germany and the North Sea.

The nineteenth century marked the moment of maximum splendor for Rauma,  as its fleet was at that time the most considerable in all of Finland.  The beautiful colored houses of its old town date back to this period.  Even today,  the movements at the port of Rauma amount to 4.7 million tons of goods.

In the twentieth century,  Rauma gradually became a more industrial city.  Today it has almost 40,000 inhabitants and its old town “Vanha Rauma” has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1991.  Let’s walk through it with my shots.

The main feature of old town Rauma are its old houses,  entirely made of wood,  perfectly preserved and painted in delicate pastel colors.  Fortunately these picturesque buildings have not been demolished,  which would have cost less,  but restored, so that you can find the atmosphere of times gone by,  very romantic,  despite the city center being vibrant and lively and above all touristic.  Shops,  cafes and restaurants make up a complete description.

  1. We have a bit of a Finnish connection. I researched the country quite a bit as I was preparing to be sent to Finland on assignment, which, unfortunately did not materialize.

Additionally, my nephew married a girl from Helsinki.

Thank you for taking us on a lovely tour of “Vanha Rauma”!
