Il nome del grande navigatore portoghese è anche il nome di questo lunghissimo ponte edificato in Portogallo,  sul fiume Tago,  in uscita dalla città di Lisbona.

Il ponte Vasco da Gama è lungo oltre 17 chilometri ed ha ben quasi 5 chilometri di viadotti.   Inaugurato alla fine degli anni ’90 per celebrare il cinquecentesimo anniversario della scoperta della via delle Indie fatta appunto da Vasco da Gama,  questo scenografico ed elegantissimo ponte  è stato per qualche anno il più lungo d’Europa.  Il suo scopo era quello di decongestionare il traffico su un altro ponte preesistente:  il ponte del XXV aprile.

La parte centrale,  più alta,  consente il passaggio alle imbarcazioni più grandi.

Vasco da Gama.

The name of the great Portuguese explorer is also the name of this very long bridge built over the Tagus river,  starting from the city of Lisbon.  The Vasco da Gama bridge is over 17 kilometers long including 5 kilometers of viaducts.

Opened to traffic at the end of the 1990s to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Da Gama’s discovery of the way from Europe to India,  this spectacular and elegant bridge was for a few years the longest in Europe.  Its purpose was to alleviate the traffic congestion from another pre-existing bridge:  the 25 de April bridge.

The center part is higher to allow passage for larger boats.
