Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Dicembre in Italia è stato per lo più soleggiato,  con qualche sporadica incursione nebbiosa,  almeno a Verona,  per cui è stato un mese climaticamente tranquillo.

In Finlandia invece questo dicembre,  come il dicembre scorso,  è stato piuttosto nevoso,  con precipitazioni continue e abbondanti.  Le temperature si sono mantenute sotto lo zero anche di parecchio di notte e chi ha un cortile o giardino grande ha passato del tempo a spalare.  Spalare la neve però non è solo una fatica o un disturbo,  è anche un’ottima ginnastica,  che non si può paragonare nemmeno ad un’ora di palestra.

Le temperature adesso sono ancora bassissime,  addirittura da record:  ad Ylivieska,  nella Finlandia centrale,  la scorsa notte è stata rilevata la minima di -38,5 gradi C.

Ho letto invece nei vari blog tedeschi,  olandesi e belgi che seguo,  che in molte località dell’Europa centrale ci sono state piogge abbondanti,  qualche alluvione e che in UK si sono susseguite tempeste di vento furiose.  Certo la crisi climatica non aspetta e siccome stiamo ancora facendo troppo poco,  si fa sentire.  Anche la conclusione troppo mite della COP28 non lascia molto ben sperare.

Mi ha molto meravigliato invece la crisi durata quasi una settimana che ha coinvolto l’aeroporto di Monaco di Baviera,  dove a causa di abbondanti nevicate,  si sono avuti ritardi,  cancellazioni e dirottamenti.  Certo un evento meteo straordinario può mettere in crisi uno scalo anche grande e ben organizzato,  ma il male oscuro che affligge molti aeroporti ultimamente è la carenza di personale:  dopo gli anni del covid in cui molti operatori sono stati licenziati o si sono licenziati,  non si è ancora tornati a pieno regime,  anche perchè si tratta di  lavori pesanti e con orari a turni.  La ricetta è semplice:  stipendi più alti e orari umani = servizi migliori.

Tra gli avvenimenti da ricordare questo mese:  l’UNESCO ha introdotto nella lista del Patrimonio Culturale immateriale dell’umanità la pratica del canto lirico italiano,  di cui Verona è a buon titolo rappresentante,  dato che la stagione operistica estiva che si svolge nella nostra Arena va avanti con successo da ben 100 anni.

Purtroppo Natale non è trascorso nella pace per milioni di esseri umani,  come ci si augura sempre e sembra che anche il 2024 inizierà sotto le bombe per qualcuno.  Naturalmente non è cosa che nessuno di noi semplici cittadini ha scelto,  sono stati alcuni individui che hanno scelto per noi.  E’ stato scoraggiante sentire i leader di varie nazioni potenti minacciare di distruzione,  di bombardamenti,  di radere al suolo,  di spazzare via…invece che parlar di avvicinamento e di pace.  Ci rimane la speranza che la ragionevolezza prevalga sulla prevaricazione e sull’autodistruzione.

Per pure ragioni di vicinanza,  ci sentiamo molto più toccati dalla guerra in Ucraina,  anche perchè non passa giorno che nei consessi internazionali qualche tirapiedi del signor Putin non lanci minacce sulla Finlandia,  rea di essere entrata nella NATO.  Ovviamente se non avveniva l’invasione dell’Ucraina,  la Finlandia avrebbe preservato la propria neutralità,  ma a sentire loro adesso dovrà soffrire a causa di questa decisione.  Evidentemente gli piace giocare al gatto col topo,  ma farebbero meglio a riflettere su quelle centinaia di migliaia di loro compatrioti mandati a morire inutilmente per oscure ragioni di predominio… 😦

Minacce e movimenti militari al confine finno-russo si sono avuti per tutto il mese di dicembre,  poichè la Finlandia ha chiuso,  riaperto e poi chiuso nuovamente i varchi secondari,  per cautelarsi dall’arrivo di centinaia di migranti spinti verso la UE dalla Russia.  La sorte toccata a questa gente però,  non è stata di rimanere in Russia e richiedere asilo laggiù,  ma essere stati trasportati a combattere in Ucraina.

In Italia l’anno si è chiuso con l’ennesimo femminicidio.  Effettivamente durante il 2023 sono avvenuti alcuni omicidi di donne ad opera di parenti e/o famigliari che hanno scosso particolarmente le coscienze per le modalità e le motivazioni.  Tanto che la parola “femminicidio” è stata scelta come parola dell’anno dall’Enciclopedia Treccani.  La parola femminicidio è importante,  perchè non indica un omicidio qualsiasi,  ma proprio l’ammazzamento di una donna ad opera di un uomo che la ritiene sua proprietà,  bene di cui disporre,  ed è proprio questa la mentalità che dovremmo eradicare.

Come ogni periodo natalizio,  essendo in pieno inverno,  si fa sentire anche il picco influenzale e il picco di contagi covid.  Il ministro della Salute raccomanda la vaccinazione e l’uso delle mascherine e dell’igiene,  soprattutto in presenza di persone fragili.  Ricordiamoci che quando parliamo di gentilezza,  empatia e buone virtù,  una delle prime è il rispetto e la cura dei fragili.

Un’ultima considerazione:  quest’anno i feriti a causa dei botti di capodanno in Italia sono un numero esorbitante,   circa 300.  Ma quanto assurdo è?

A Month in my Photos.

December in Italy was mostly sunny,  with some sporadic foggy incursions,  at least in Verona,  so it was quite a calm month. 

In Finland this December,  like last December,  was rather snowy,  with continuous and abundant snowfalls.  Temperatures remained below freezing even for a long time at night and those with a large yard or garden spent time shoveling.  However,  shoveling snow isn’t just a chore or a nuisance,  it’s also excellent exercise,  which can’t even be compared to an hour in the gym. 

Temperatures are now still very low,  even record-breaking:  in Ylivieska,  in central Finland,  last night the minimum of -38.5 degrees C was recorded.

I have also read in the various German,  Dutch and Belgian blogs that I follow,  that in many places in Central Europe there have been heavy rains,  some floods and that in the UK there have been successive furious windstorms.  Of course,  the climate crisis doesn’t wait and since we are still doing too little,  it is making itself felt.  Even the too mild conclusion of COP28 does not promise well.

I have to say I was very surprised by the crisis that lasted almost a week involving Munich airport,  where due to heavy snowfalls there were delays,  cancellations and diversions.  Of course an extraordinary weather event can cause a moment of crisis even in a large and well-organised airport,  but the dark evil that has afflicted many airports lately is the lack of staff.  After the pandemic years in which many operators were fired or quit,  we are not yet back at full capacity.  As we know,  airport work involves heavy work and shifts.  The recipe is simple:  higher salaries and reasonable shifts = better services.

Among the events to remember this month:  UNESCO introduced into the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity the practice of Italian opera singing,  of which Verona is a good representative,  given that the summer opera season which takes place in our Arena has been going on successfully for 100 years.

Unfortunately,  Christmas did not pass in peace for millions of human beings,  as we always hope and it seems that 2024 will also begin under bombs for some.  Of course it is not something that any of us ordinary citizens chose,  it was a few crazy individuals who chose for us.  It was disheartening to hear the leaders of various powerful nations threaten destruction,  bombing,  razing,  wiping out…instead of talking about rapprochement and peace.  We are left with the hope that reasonableness will prevail over prevarication and self-destruction.

For mere reasons of closeness,  we feel much more affected by the war in Ukraine,  also because day in day out in international forums some of Mr. Putin’s underlings issues threats against Finland,  guilty of having joined NATO.  Obviously if the invasion of Ukraine had not happened,  Finland would have preserved its neutrality,  but according to them it will now have to suffer because of this decision.  They like to play cat and mouse,  but they shoulds better reflect on those hundreds of thousands of their compatriots sent to die needlessly for obscure reasons of dominance… 😦

Threats and military movements on the Finnish-Russian border occurred throughout the month of December,  as Finland closed,  reopened and then closed secondary crossings again,  to protect itself from the arrival of hundreds of migrants pushed towards the EU by Russia.  The fate that befell these people,  however,  was not to remain in Russia and request asylum there,  but to be transported to fight in Ukraine.

In Italy the year ended with yet another femicide.  Indeed,  during 2023,  some murders of women committed by relatives and/or family members occurred which particularly shocked consciences due to the methods and motivations.  So much so that the word “femicide” was chosen as word of the year by the Treccani Encyclopedia.  The word “femicide” is important,  because it does not indicate just any murder,  but precisely the killing of a woman by a man who considers her his property,  an asset to be disposed of,  and it is precisely this mentality that we should eradicate.

As happens at every Christmas time,  being just in the middle of winter,  the flu peak and the peak of Covid infections are also felt.  The Minister of Health recommends vaccination and the use of masks and hygiene,  especially in the presence of weak or elderly people.  Let us remember it when we talk about kindness,  empathy and good virtues:   one of the first is respect and care for the weaker ones.

One last consideration:  this year the number of injured people after the new year’s eve private fireworks in Italy is enormous,   about 300.  Isn’t it absolutely absurd?
