Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Ottobre 2023 in Finlandia è stato certamente più freddo e nevoso del normale.  Non è certo una novità:  le fluttuazioni di temperatura e precipitazioni avvengono e gli anni non sono tutti uguali;  ad esempio nel freddissimo ottobre del 2002 avevamo a metà mese una temperatura notturna di -16C e circa una quindicina di cm di neve al suolo.  Questo però non signfica nulla:  l’inverno può ugualmente essere mite e poco nevoso,  nonostante l’incipit,  specialmente alla luce della crisi climatica in corso.

Dicevo che questo ottobre è stato fresco:  abbiamo avuto fino a -8 gradi C di notte e qualche spruzzatina di neve.  Ovviamente io parlo della Finlandia meridionale,  di Somero,  poichè in Lapponia,  nell’estremo nord,  hanno avuto precipitazioni nevose sin da inizio mese.

In Italia invece questo ottobre ci ha regalato una prima metà davvero dolce e calda.  Risto e io eravamo a Verona e ne abbiamo approfittato per visitare le sagre e le fiere in corso,  per assaggiare specialità locali e per stare con gli amici di sempre.  Adesso a fine mese sono arrivate piogge copiose anche nella mia Verona e qualche ponte sul fiume Adige (che arriva da Trento),  è stato chiuso per evitare i danni della piena.

Gli uccelli migratori se la sono squagliata tutti quanti:  adesso sono rimasti i pochi stanziali che vanno aiutati con le mangiatoie ben fornite di semi di girasole e palle di grasso.  Adesso i pettirossi si sentono cantare/trillare nelle siepi e nei campi in Italia.

Le giornate si sono accorciate in maniera incredibile.  Dal cambio dell’ora la differenza è drastica e continuerà così fino al solstizio d’inverno.  Tutto sommato però qui al nord il ritorno all’ora solare è benvenuto,  almeno si guadagnano ore di luce preziosa al mattino,  nel pieno delle attività scolastiche e lavorative:  altrimenti al mattino si farebbe chiaro alle 11…che è decisamente troppo tardi,  secondo me.

Le notizie che arrivano dal mondo e da medio oriente in particolare mi rattristano moltissimo perchè vedo proprio che gli esseri umani non fanno buon uso del loro libero arbitrio e che stanno distruggendo il pianeta per conquistare qualche chilomentro quadrato di terra.  Inoltre la domanda che mi nasce spontanea è la seguente:  ma se nemmeno le religioni ci inducono alla pace,  se nemmeno nazioni che fanno della religione il loro vessillo parlano di pace,  a che servono le religioni?

Fra le altre notizie,  alcune sono interessanti:  ad esempio il presidente Niinistö ha fatto visita di stato al nostro presidente Mattarella,  col quale ha discusso di accordi internazionali e di collaborazione fra i due Paesi a livello commerciale,  scientifico,  culturale.  Nel corso dell’incontro si è commemorata anche la figura dell’ex presidente finlandese Martti Ahtisaari,  premio nobel per la pace nel 2008 e diplomatico di lungo corso che dopo l’esperienza presidenziale creò una fondazione che si occupa di mediazioni per la pace e che ha dato contributi validi a trattative di vario genere in conflitti e non solo.

A livello di curiosità segnalo il fatto che per la prima volta un ingegnere italiano è stato eletto a capo di una multinazionale finlandese,  per la precisione la UPM Corporation,  industria che si occupa della produzione della carta a partire dal taglio dei boschi.

Infine segnalo a chi risiede a Roma che per tutto novembre nella capitale si terranno eventi dal sapore nordico per far conoscere la cultura,  l’architettura e le arti dei Paesi del nord Europa.  Gli eventi (molti gratuiti) vanno dalle mostre,  agli incontri con l’autore,  alle conferenze e si terranno in vari luoghi.

A Month in my Photos.

October 2023 in Finland was certainly colder and snowier than normal.  This is certainly nothing new:  fluctuations in temperature and precipitations occur and not all years are the same;  for example,  in the very cold October of year 2002 we had a night temperature of -16C in the middle of the month and about fifteen cm of new snow on the ground.  However,  this means nothing:  winter can still be mild and not so snowy,  despite the beginning,  especially in light of the ongoing climate crisis.

I was saying that this October has been cool:  we’ve had up to -8 degrees C at night and a few dustings of snow.  Obviously I’m talking about southern Finland,  about Somero,  because in Lapland,  in the far north,  they have already had large snowfalls.

In Italy,  instead,  this October gave us a truly sweet and warm first half.  Risto and I were in Verona and we took the opportunity to visit the ongoing festivals and fairs,  to taste local specialties and to spend time with our old friends.  Now at the end of the month heavy rains have also arrived in my Verona and some bridges over the Adige river (which comes from Trento) have been closed to avoid damage from the flood.

Migratory birds have all fled from Finland:  now only the few resident birds are left.  They need to be helped with feeders well stocked with sunflower seeds and suet balls.  Robins can now be heard singing/warbling in hedgerows and fields in Italy.

Days have become incredibly shorter.  Since the time change the difference is visible and will continue like this until the winter solstice.  All in all,  however,  here in the north the return to wintertime is welcome,  at least we enjoy hours of precious light during the morning,  in the midst of school and work activities:  otherwise in the morning it would be bright at 11.00… which is definitely too late,  in my opinion.

The news coming from the world and from the Middle East in particular saddens me greatly because I really see that human beings do not make good use of their free will and that they are destroying the planet just to conquer a few square kilometers of land.  Furthermore,  the question that arises spontaneously is the following:  but if not even religions lead us to peace,  if not even nations that make religion their banner speak of peace,  what use are religions?

Among other news,  some are interesting:  for example,  President Niinistö paid a state visit to our President Mattarella,  with whom he discussed international agreements and collaboration between the two countries at a commercial,  scientific and cultural level.  During the meeting  they commemorated former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari,  Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2008 and high level diplomat who after his presidential experience created a foundation that deals with peace mediation and has given valid contributions to negotiations in various kinds of conflicts.

Easier news this month were for instance:  for the first time an Italian engineer has been elected head of a Finnish multinational,  the UPM Corporation to be precise,  an industry that deals with the production of paper starting from the very cutting of forests.

Finally,  I would like to point out to my readers who live in Rome that events with a Nordic flavor will be held throughout November in the Italian capital to raise awareness of the culture,  architecture and arts of Northern European countries.  The events (many are free of charge) range from exhibitions,  to meetings with authors,  to conferences and will be held in various places.
