Arte al Rotermanni #1.

In una Tallinn prenatalizia senza neve, abbiamo visitato il Rotermanni Quarter, proprio in centro, tra la citta’ vecchia chiamata “Vanalinna” e il porto.

Rotermanni era un polo industriale di una certa importanza, che ora e’ diventato un centro multiservizi: negozi, ristoranti, aree espositive…

La mostra che voglio condividere oggi con voi e’ dedicata all’arte contemporanea dell’artista Kalev Mark Kostabi, ispirata anche alla pittura metafisica di Giorgio De Chirico.

Le opere sono grafiche realizzate con la tecnica giclée, un metodo di stampa digitale fine art di altissima qualità.

La prima opera che vediamo si intitola: “Eternal Future”. (2016)

Kalev Mark Kostabi e’ nato nel 1960 a Los Angeles da una famiglia estone, ha studiato arte alla California State University e negli anni ’80 si e’ spostato a New York, dove ha vissuto nel Village, diventando un figura importante del panorama artistico contemporaneo a livello mondiale. Kostabi ha infatti esposto le sue opere nelle piu’ importanti gallerie e oggi i suoi lavori fanno parte delle collezioni permanenti di musei come il Guggenheim, il Groninger, la Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna a Roma e naturalmente il Museo d’Arte Estone di Tallinn.

Kalev Mark Kostabi e’ conosciutissimo dai piu’, anche se il suo nome puo’ non essere noto, poiche’ ha firmato numerosi oggetti di design: da vasi della ditta italiana Alessi, a tazze da caffe’ di Rosenthal, a bicchieri della tedesca Ritzenhoff, a una maglia rosa del Giro d’Italia. Non solo: Kostabi ha disegnato copertine di album musicali di vari artisti, fra cui i Guns’n’Roses, una shopping bag per Bloomingdales, ha scolpito alcune statue di personaggi celebri che si trovano in Italia. Kostabi e’ anche musicista e il suo primo album ha un titolo spiritoso: “I Did it Steinway”.

Art at Rotermann #1.

In a snowless pre-Christmas Tallinn, we visited the Rotermanni Quarter, right in the center, between the old town called “Vanalinna” and the harbour.

Rotermanni was once an important industrial hub, now a multi-service center: shops, restaurants, exhibition areas…

The exhibition I want to share with you today is dedicated to the contemporary art of Kalev Mark Kostabi, also inspired by the metaphysical paintings of Giorgio De Chirico.

They are all graphic art works, created using the giclée technique, a very high-quality fine art digital printing method.

Kalev Mark Kostabi was born in 1960 in Los Angeles to an Estonian family. He studied art at California State University and moved to New York in the 1980s, where he lived in the Village, becoming a major figure in the global contemporary art scene. Kostabi has exhibited his work in major galleries, and today his works are part of the permanent collections of museums such as the Guggenheim, the Groninger, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, and, of course, t he Art Museum of Estonia in Tallinn.

Kalev Mark Kostabi is well known to most people, even if his name may not be familiar, as he has created numerous design objects: from vases for the Italian company Alessi, to coffee cups for Rosenthal, to glasses for the German company Ritzenhoff, to a pink jersey for the Giro d’Italia. Not only that: Kostabi has designed album covers for various artists, including Guns ‘n’ Roses, a shopping bag for Bloomingdales and has sculpted several statues of famous people located in Italy. Kostabi is also a musician and his first album has the humorous title “I Did it Steinway”.
