La farfalla che vedete nel mio post di oggi e’ chiamata comunemente:  Vanessa “Occhio di pavone”,  a causa sicuramente della sua bellezza,  ma anche a causa dell’abile trucco che usa per difendersi dai predatori.  Essa infatti e’ stata dotata dalla Natura di due paia di cerchi colorati e giganteschi dipinti sulle sue ali,  i quali sembrano proprio gli occhi di un animale ben piu’ grande.  Ingannati da questa vista,  i predatori si spera la lascino in pace.

Le farfalle non hanno altri mezzi per sfuggire ai predatori se non il mimetismo e il volo arzigogolato e sfuggente (provate a seguirle con gli occhi!) – infatti esse non pungono,  non emettono ronzii od odori fastidiosi,  non hanno veleno.

(Il titolo del post è ispirato ad un vecchio successo di Gianni Morandi: “Occhi di ragazza”).

A Butterfly’s Eyes.

The butterfly you see in my post today is commonly called:  “Peacock butterfly”,  certainly because of its beauty,  but also because of the clever trick she uses against predators.  In fact,  it has been endowed by Nature with two pairs of colored and gigantic “eyes” painted on its wings,  which look like the eyes of a much larger animal.  Deceived by this view,  predators will hopefully leave it alone.

Butterflies have no other means of escaping predators but mimicry and convoluted and elusive flight (try to follow them with your eyes!) – in fact they do not sting,  do not buzz,  do not smell,  they have no poison.

(This post title is inspired to an old song by Italian singer Gianni Morandi:  “Occhi di ragazza”,  literally: “Girl’s Eyes”).

  12. Purtroppo è la triste verità. Stiamo sterminando le farfalle a colpi di veleni e pesticidi, nonostante tutto nella pubblicità ci venga venduto come bio e green! Ormai è chiaro che le poche farfalle più resistenti sono le bianche cavolaie, le altre stanno soccombendo.
