Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Anche Novembre e’ stato piuttosto tiepido,  in Finlandia,  con temperature sopra lo zero,  nonostante varie incursioni di aria fredda da nord che hanno portato qualche gelata e perfino qualche spruzzatina di neve.  Solo adesso,  a fine mese,  abbiamo avuto un assaggio d’inverno:  al momento ci sono una decina di centimetri di neve per terra che ha illuminato immediatamente le lunghe serate.

Adesso infatti le giornate sono cortissime:  alle 16.00 c’e’ gia’ piuttosto buio e manca ancora un mesetto alla durata minima.  Ma quel che fa piu’ impressione non e’ tanto la sera,  quanto il mattino:  adesso si puo’ dire che alle 8.30 non e’ ancora giorno.  E le prime luci natalizie baluginano gia’ dalle finestre senza scuri.

La neve ci ha sorpresi:  siamo stati ad una fiera internazionale e quando siamo partiti era ancora autunno,  con le ultime foglie dorate spazzate dal vento,  mentre al nostro ritorno tutto era bianco.  Addirittura alcuni lavori in giardino sono rimasti da fare.  Pero’ approfittando dell’atmosfera magica abbiamo gia’ addobbato il nostro pino argentato piu’ alto ad albero di Natale;  adesso e’ il momento di godere delle lucine e dei loro riflessi sulla neve,  almeno per chi ama il Natale come noi.

Naturalmente anche qui la crisi energetica ci impedisce di scialacquare.  Come detto,  la Finlandia si serve principalmente delle proprie 4 centrali nucleari per produrre energia ma quando il freddo si fa piu’ intenso puo’ non bastare,  per cui c’e un interscambio con gli altri paesi scandinavi.  Ma se le temperature sono proibitive ovunque potremmo avere qualche black-out programmato.

Con il paesaggio totalmente innevato,  tutti i suoni sono considerevolmente attutiti.  In base a questa sensazione verrebbe da pensare che la vita un po’ si ferma:  niente di piu’ falso.  Chi fa anche solo una breve passeggiata attraverso i boschi innevati vede che la vita e’ solo rallentata:  ci sono infatti miriadi di impronte di animali che vanno continuamente in cerca di cibo.  Chi non e’ andato in letargo si da’ molto da fare infatti per sopravvivere,  ma rimane sempre dentro il bosco,  in zona protetta,  non si espone in mezzo ai campi.  Dai Cervi ai Caprioli alle Alci agli Uccellini stanziali,  alle Lepri e perfino a quelli come il Tasso e il Cane-procione che in inverno dormono un sonno leggero e ogni tanto fanno una capatina fuori dalla tana.

In Italia a novembre abbiamo avuto il cambio di stagione che normalmente avviene:  siamo approdati all’autunno conclamato;  l’autunno vero e proprio che nella Pianura Padana significa soprattutto umidità e nebbia.

Purtroppo nella bella Ischia l’autunno ha portato una vera e propria strage,  a seguito dell’alluvione e delle piogge eccezionali.  Ma ancora una volta e’ colpa dell’uomo,  che non si prende cura del territorio in modo adeguato.  Queste povere vite spezzate ci insegneranno a non ripetere gli stessi sbagli nuovamente?

A inizio mese la COP27 non ha certo portato a risultati soddisfacenti:  l’inquinamento continua imperterrito e l’aria diventa sempre piu’ irrespirabile,  i mari pieni di plastica e le temperature da girarrosto.  C’è però qualche piccola cosa che possiamo fare tutti per contribuire ad inquinare meno:  per esempio adesso in occasione del Natale,  cerchiamo di orientarci su regali utili e costruttivi,  ad esempio regaliamo specialità alimentari.  In Italia abbiamo altro che prelibatezze fra cui scegliere:  invece di uno stupido gadget fabbricato in estremo oriente da bambini più o meno schiavi (che fa crescere solamente l’economia di quei Paesi),  regaliamo una bottiglia di vino,  una marmellata ai sapori insoliti,  dei biscotti fragranti magari fatti da noi.  Non facciamolo diventare un Natale di plastica!

A me il calcio non interessa e non lo seguo.  Semplicemente non è nelle mie corde.  Per la verità non seguo alcuno sport dal divano,  perchè a me lo sport piace praticarlo.  Per cui non seguirò nemmeno i Mondiali in Qatar.  Anche perchè trovo che far svolgere il torneo in un Paese manchevole su tanti fronti,  non solo quello dei diritti umani,  sia una scelta sbagliata,  come hanno scritto già vari bloggers.  Per me però vale anche il motivo ambientale:  se per far svolgere le partite bisogna climatizzare perfino l’aria aperta e produrre tonnellate di CO2,  allora abbiamo già perso.  Tutti.

La neve e il freddo devono aver sorpreso anche il povero popolo ucraino martoriato,  al quale va il mio pensiero.  Quella povera gente bombardata continuamente,  al freddo e con scarsi viveri,  mi fa chiedere davvero di che cosa sia capace l’essere umano,  perfino nel terzo millennio,  che dovrebbe essere il massimo della civiltà.

A proposito di esseri umani crudeli:  si e’ appena celebrata la Giornata Internazionale contro la violenza sulle donne e la violenza di genere.  Chi perpetra atti simili non e’ solo crudele,  ma anche perfettamente ignorante,  nel senso di ineducato:  ineducato ai valori,  al rispetto,  alla comprensione,  all’aiuto reciproco,  al gestire le proprie pulsioni…  Comunque visto che il problema e’ enorme,  si spera che almeno il governo non tagli i fondi ai centri anti-violenza,  a maggior ragione dato che anche la Premier e’ donna.

Il covid in Finlandia non fa piu’ paura,  anche perche’ la popolazione e’ vaccinata praticamente tutta,  giovani compresi.  L’ultimo report del Ministero da’ 403 casi per 100.000 abitanti nelle due settimane centrali di Novembre.  C’e’ anche l’influenza stagionale a cui stare attenti,  come sempre,  ma sappiamo bene che il vaccino protegge e in qualche circostanza la mascherina e’ ancora utile.

Una notizia sentita alla radio ieri:  una delle piazze di San Gimignano,  storica cittadina toscana,  e’ stata intitolata a Mahsa Amini,  la giovane iraniana dalla cui vicenda sono scaturite le proteste contro il regime in quel Paese.

A Month in my Photos.

November was also rather warm,  in Finland,  with temperatures above zero,  despite various incursions of cold air from the north that brought some frosts and even a few sprinkles of snow.  Only now,   at the end of the month,  we have had a taste of winter:   at the moment there are about ten centimeters of snow on the ground which immediately brightened up the long evenings.

In fact,  the days are now very short:  it’s already quite dark at 4.00 pm and the minimum duration is still a month away.  But what makes the most impression is not so much in the evening as in the morning:  now we can say that at 8.30 am it is not yet day.  And the first Christmas lights are already glimmering from the shutterless windows.

The snow surprised us:   we were travelling and when we left it was still autumn,  with the last golden leaves swept by the wind,   while on our return everything was white.  Even some work in the garden was left to be done.  But we are taking advantage of the magical atmosphere and have already decorated our tallest silver spruce as a Christmas tree;  now is the time to enjoy the lights and their reflections on the snow,  at least for those who are Christmas fans like us.

Of course the energy crisis prevents us from squandering too.  As mentioned,  Finland mainly uses its 4 nuclear power plants to produce energy but when the cold gets more intense it may not be enough,  so there is an exchange with the other Scandinavian countries.  But if the temperatures are very low everywhere we could have planned blackouts.

With the landscape totally covered in snow,  all sounds are considerably muffled.  Based on this feeling,  one would think that life stops a bit:  nothing could be more false.  Anyone who takes even a short walk through the snowy woodlands sees that life has only slowed down:  there are plenty of footprints of animals that are constantly looking for food.  Actually,  those who have not gone into hibernation are working hard to survive,  but always remain in the woods,  in a protected area,  and do not show themselves in the middle of the fields:  Deer,  Roe deer,  Moose,  sedentary Birds,  Hares and even those like the Badger and the Raccoon dog who sleep lightly in winter and occasionally pop out of their den.

In Italy in November we had the change of season that normally takes place:  it is now fully autumn;  the real autumn which in the Po Valley means above all humidity and fog.

Unfortunately,  autumn brought a real massacre to beautiful Ischia,  following the flood and exceptional rainfall.  But once again it is man’s fault,  who doesn’t take care of the area adequately.  Will these poor broken lives teach us not to repeat the same mistakes again?

At the beginning of this month,  COP27 certainly didn’t lead to satisfactory results:  pollution continues unabated and the air becomes increasingly unbreathable,  the seas are full of plastic and temperatures reach grilling levels in summer.  However,  there is a few small things we can all do to help pollute less:  for example now at Christmas let’s try to focus on useful and constructive gifts like specialty foods.  In Italy we have nothing but delicacies to choose from:  instead of a stupid gadget made in the Far East by children who are more or less slaves (which only makes the economy of those countries grow),  let’s give away a bottle of wine,  a jam with unusual flavours,  fragrant biscuits maybe made by us.  Let’s not make it a plastic Christmas!

I am not interested in football and I don’t follow it.  It’s just not my cup of tea.  Actually,  I don’t follow any sport from the sofa because I like playing sport.  So I won’t even follow the World Cup in Qatar.  Also because I find that being the competition in a country that is lacking on many fronts,  not just that of human rights,  is a wrong choice,  as various bloggers have already written.  For me,  however,  the environmental reason also applies:  if even the outdoors must be air-conditioned and tons of CO2 produced just for football matches,  then we have already lost.  All.

The snow and the cold must have surprised even the poor martyred Ukrainian people,  to whom I am thinking.  Those poor people who are continuously bombed,  in the cold and with little food,  really make me wonder what human beings are capable of,  even in the third millennium,  which should be the highest point of civilization.

Speaking of cruel human beings:  the International Day for the Elimination of violence against women and gender-based violence has just been celebrated.  Anyone who uses violence against a woman is not only cruel,  but also perfectly ignorant,  in the sense of uneducated:  uneducated to values,  to respect,  to understanding,  to mutual aid,  to managing one’s impulses …  In any case,  since the problem is enormous,  I hope that at least Italian government will not cut funds to anti-violence centres,  all the more so given that our Premier is also a woman.

The covid in Finland is no longer scary,  also because practically the entire population has been vaccinated,  including young people.  The latest Ministry report gives 403 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the central two weeks of November.  There is also the seasonal flu to watch out for,  as always,  but we know well that the vaccine protects and in some circumstances the mask is still useful.

News heard on the radio yesterday:  one of the squares of San Gimignano,  a historic Tuscan town,  was named after Mahsa Amini,  the young Iranian whose story sparked the protests against the regime in that country.
