Tra Italia e Finlandia

La localita’ di Ruka,  nel comune di Kuusamo nel nordest Finlandia,  deve il suo nome a Rukatunturi,  una montagna di 490 metri che domina la zona.  Siamo vicinissimi al Circolo Polare Artico e qui le montagne non sono alte come le nostre Alpi,  avendo una orogenesi molto piu’ antica.

Ruka e’ essenzialmente un luogo dedicato alla natura e allo sport:  in inverno e’ un comprensorio sciistico attrezzatissimo,  con piste innevate (anche artificialmente all’occorrenza) sia da fondo che da discesa;  in estate si praticano trekking,  bici,  paddling,  canoa…

Come ho detto gia’ in molti post,  la zona nord della Finlandia e’ scarsamente abitata:  le cittadine sono piccole e le distanze considerevoli;  vi si trovano ampie estensioni di foreste,  laghi sconfinati e paludi che sono le rimanenze dell’ultima glaciazione.  Ma tutta questa ricchezza paesaggistica ne fa un ambiente ricercatissimo dai turisti che vogliono immergersi nella natura selvaggia,  rilassarsi lontano dal caos e dai rumori e finalmente ritrovare se stessi.

In queste due foto:  Ruka e’ il punto piu’ meridionale del “Karhunkierros”,  il Sentiero del’Orso,  un percorso famoso tra gli appassionati di trekking,  che si estende per 80km per lo piu’ attraverso il Oulanka National Park.  Attrezzato con capanne,  Laavu e punti dove e’ possibile piantare la propria tenda,  il sentiero e’ frequentato da migliaia di hikers ogni anno.  Esiste con le medesime modalita’ un sentiero piu’ breve,  di 12km,  chiamato Pieni Karhunkierros.

Per finire:  in centro a Ruka,  alla partenza della funivia,  il monumento a Kalevi Oikarainen,  famoso fondista olimpionico nato a Kuusamo.

Ruka  (part 1).

The village of Ruka,  in the municipality of Kuusamo in north-east Finland,  owes its name to Rukatunturi,  a 490 meters high mountain that dominates the area.  We are here very close to the Arctic Circle and here the mountains are not as high as Alps,  having a much older orogeny. 

Ruka is essentially a place dedicated to nature and sport:  in winter it is a well-equipped ski area,  with snow-covered slopes (even artificially if necessary) both for cross-country and downhill;  in summer you can go trekking,  biking,  paddling,  canoeing …

As I have already said in many posts,  the northern area of Finland is scarcely inhabited:  towns are small and distances are considerable;  there are large extensions of forests,  boundless lakes and swamps which are the remnants of the last glaciation.  But all this landscape richness makes it a much sought after environment by tourists who want to immerse themselves in the wilderness,  relax away from the chaos and noise and finally find themselves.

Ruka is the southernmost point of the “Karhunkierros”,  the Bear Trail,  a famous route among trekking enthusiasts,  which extends for 80km mostly through the Oulanka National Park.  Equipped with huts,  Laavu and designated camping areas,  the trail is frequented by thousands of hikers every year.  Similarly,  there is a shorter path,  12km long,  called Pieni Karhunkierros.

Finally:  in the center of Ruka,  at the cable car station,  the monument to Kalevi Oikarainen,  a famous Olympic cross-country skier born in Kuusamo.
