Una “megera”.

Questa bellissima ed appariscente farfalla del genere Nymphalidae (come la famosa Vanessa Occhio di pavone),  si chiama Lasiommata megera.   Si tratta di una farfalla diffusa in tutta l’Eurasia,  ad eccezione dei climi rigidi come quello finlandese.  In particolare questa nelle mie foto e’ probabilmente una femmina,  poiche’ il maschio ha strisce nere piu’ disegnate e visibili.

CURIOSITA’:  Personalmente mi chiedo il motivo del nome,  che in italiano significa “donna brutta e scontrosa”;  ma probabilmente e’ un omaggio alla cultura classica,  essendo Megera una delle Furie.

Il nome in inglese e’ invece:  The Wall o Wall brown,  per la sua abitudine di crogiolarsi al sole su ogni possibile superficie.

The Wall.

This beautiful and showy butterfly of the genus Nymphalidae  (like the famous Peacock butterfly),  is called Lasiommata megera.  It is widespread throughout Eurasia,  with the exception of harsh climates such as the Finnish one.  In particular,  the individual in my photos is probably a female,  as the male has more marked and visible black stripes.

A FUN FACT:  I wonder the reason for the name Megera,  which in Italian means “ugly and grumpy woman”;  but it is probably a tribute to classical culture,  being Megera one of the mythological Furies.

In English the name of this wonderful critter is:  Wall brown,  or simply The Wall,  apparently from its habit to bask in the sun on every surface possible.
