Tra Italia e Finlandia

L’aeroporto di Monaco di Baviera,  (MUC),  e’ un grandissimo hub situato appena fuori la citta’ stessa,  nella regione tedesca della Baviera.  Costruito ed inaugurato nei primi anni ’90,  sostituendo tout court il precedente aeroporto di Riem diventato troppo piccolo ed inadatto,  ha iniziato le operazioni nel 1992.  Ad oggi Muc movimenta circa 50 milioni di passeggeri l’anno (statistica del priodo pre-pandemico) essendo il secondo aeroporto piu’ grande della Germania.

Monaco di Baviera ha due terminal principali – uno riservato ai voli Lufthansa e compagnie associate ed uno ai voli delle altre compagnie – piu’ aeree destinate ai voli merci.  A sua volta il terminal LH e’ collegato ad un altro terminal satellite,  altrettanto enorme,  raggiungibile mediante un trenino sotterraneo.  Le piste in servizio sono due. I luminosi terminal sono edificati in ferro e vetro,  con soffitti alti ed ampi spazi a disposizione dei passeggeri anche durante le attese piu’ lunghe;  oltre ai numerosi bar,  ristoranti,  negozi,  duty-free,  ci sono farmacie,  barbieri,  postazioni per massaggi,  edicole,  cabine per dormire ed alcune sale vip.

Personalmente ricordo benissimo il momento in cui questo aeroporto fu aperto in quanto lavoravo gia’ a Verona ed avevamo voli diretti.  Vi ho fatto scalo innumerevoli volte,  trovandomi sempre bene.   Una caratteristica di questo aeroporto, credo piuttosto unica,  e’ il grande cortile fra i due terminal principali che viene intelligentemente sfruttato per eventi e manifestazioni varie,  cui accedono gli abitanti dei dintorni,  ovviamente,  non solo i passeggeri in transito.  Io stessa mi fermo sempre a dare un’occhiata quando c’e’ il mercatino di Natale.

Munich Airport (MUC) is a huge hub located just outside the city of Munich itself,  in the German region of Bavaria.

Built and inaugurated in the early 90s,  replacing the previous Riem airport by the time too small and unsuitable,  it began operations in 1992.  Today Muc handles about 50 million passengers a year (pre-pandemic statistics) being the second largest airport in Germany.  Munich has two main terminals – one reserved for Lufthansa flights and sister companies and one for flights of other companies – plus areas occupied by freight flights.  The LH terminal is connected to another satellite terminal,  equally huge,  reachable by an underground train.  There are two runways in service. 

The airport terminals are built in iron and glass, with high ceilings,  and bright and large spaces available to passengers even during the longest connections;  in addition to the numerous bars,  restaurants,  shops,  duty-free shops,  there are chemists’,  barbers’,  massage stands,  newsstands,  sleeping cabins and some VIP lounges. 

I remember very well the moment this airport was opened as I was already working in Verona and we had direct flights. I have stopped over there countless times,  always finding good service.  A feature of this airport,  I think quite unique,  is the large courtyard between the two main terminals which is cleverly used for various events  accessed by the inhabitants of the surroundings,  of course,  not just transit passengers.  I always stop and have a look when the Christmas market is held.
