Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Dicembre e’ stato caratterizzato da due estremi:  a inizio mese una tagliente ondata di freddo artico ci ha fatto provare i brividi dei -20 gradi per alcuni giorni;  poi il vento e’ tornato a soffiare da sud e il termometro e’ risalito sopra lo zero di 4/5 gradi,  sciogliendo tutta la poca neve che era arrivata.  Di nuovo dal 20 del mese l’aria ha ripreso a convogliare impulsi freddi e siamo ripiombati nel gelo intenso.  Adesso finalmente siamo ancora sottozero ma c’e’ un gradevole manto bianco tutto attorno.

Ovviamente quando il freddo e’ cosi’ intenso c’e’ alta pressione e quindi il sole brilla nel cielo terso e blu:  abbiamo infatti avuto giornate luminosissime,  in cui i riflessi della neve e del ghiaccio hanno creato diamanti dappertutto.

Addirittura il giorno 7 abbiamo rivisto il fenomeno ottico del “Halo”,  cioe’ il “sole con la cuspide”,  che si crea solo in presenza di temperature veramente estreme.  Vi avevo parlato di questo fenomeno nel mio post:  traitaliaefinlandia.com/2018/02/27/effetti-ottici-del-freddo/

Comunque ho provato a scattare una foto il giorno 7 dicembre dal mio telefonino:

Sono le giornate piu’ brevi dell’anno:  adesso alle 8 di mattina inizia ad albeggiare e prima che sia giorno fatto arrivano le 9.30/10,  a seconda che il cielo sia blu o grigio di nuvole.

Una curiosita’ a cui gli amici italiani sicuramente non avevano pensato e’ l’arco ridottissimo descritto nel cielo dal sole.  Mi spiego:  il sole dovrebbe sempre sorgere ad est e tramontare ad ovest;  questo e’ vero fino ad una certa latitudine.  Gia’ a Verona pero’ (che e’ a 45 gradi Nord),  vediamo che il punto da dove nasce il sole e dove tramonta e’ diverso nelle stagioni e che l’arco del sole e’ piu’ largo in estate e piu’ ridotto in inverno.  Qui la situazione e’ portata all’estremo:  il sole in estate nasce a nord-est e tramonta a nord-ovest mentre adesso nasce e tramonta a sud.  Ne consegue che l’arco in cielo e’ strettissimo e bassissimo.  (La latitudine di Somero e’ 60 gradi Nord).

L’atmosfera natalizia qui e’ coinvolgente:  in ogni casa,  in ogni giardino,  ci sono pittoresche luminarie (pero’ sempre con luci ferme,  non intermittenti);  in tutti i luoghi pubblici ci sono luci alle finestre/vetrine,  incluse le banche,  gli uffici,  non solo i negozi.  Inoltre,  quando si va nella natura tutto e’ silenzio:  gli animali non si muovono,  se ne stanno stretti stretti nel folto dei boschi allontanandosi di poco dalle loro tane.  Alcuni naturalmente sono in letargo.  Adesso si sente solo talvolta il martellare ostinato del Picchio o il richiamo lamentoso dei Ciuffolotti.

Anche a noi umani viene la tentazione di andare in letargo,  con queste giornate corte.  In estate dormiamo molto meno,  a causa del chiaro anche di notte,  mentre adesso recuperiamo.  😉

Io e Risto siamo stati in Italia,  questo dicembre e non abbiamo fatto niente di speciale,  ma certamente abbiamo fatto compagnia alla mia mamma.  Quando siamo partiti il termometro segnava -21C e al nostro ritorno +5C.

A proposito di questo,  vi voglio raccontare che cosa ci siamo regalati per Natale,  un dono “immateriale”:  due biglietti di Business class sull’aereo,  per viaggiare comodi e non avere nessuno seduto vicino.   Troppe volte pensiamo che un regalo sia necessariamente un oggetto,  che poi magari si rivela superfluo,  ma allora perche’ non spendere il denaro per regalarsi una comodita’?  (Del resto,  se si prenota con largo anticipo,  le tariffe di Business non sono tanto diverse da quelle di Economy:  senz’altro costano meno di un telefonino nuovo).

Siamo andati e tornati prima dell’avvento delle nuove restrizioni e ci e’ sembrato di ritrovare la benedetta normalita’.  Adesso invece,  con questa nuova variante,  cioe’ praticamente con un nuovo virus,  siamo di nuovo in trincea.  Sarebbe comunque di aiuto una comunicazione piu’ serena da parte dei media come da parte dell’OMS:  per favore,  smorzate i toni…il panico e l’ansia non aiutano.

La situazione covid anche in Finlandia sta peggiorando,  al punto che si stanno predisponendo ulteriori posti letto negli ospedali.  Addirittura si stanno predisponendo ospedali solo-covid,  come la struttura che si trova a Paimio,  a fianco del famoso sanatorio progettato dall’architetto Aalto.  Anche qui il grosso dei ricoverati e’ rappresentato dai no-vax:  peccato,  perche’ obbligano i sanitari ad un superlavoro e   provocano ritardi nell’assistenza degli altri malati.  Per non parlare dei costi delle cure.  Ricordate quando e’ scoppiata la pandemia e tutti aspettavamo il vaccino come la manna dal cielo?  Cosa e’ successo poi?  Dove si e’ interrotto il percorso?  Quando si e’ creato questo abominevole discrimine sociale?

Il governo finlandese e’ stato cauto nell’imporre restrizioni (secondo me troppo cauto) tanto che alcuni gestori di ristoranti,  bar e locali pubblici avevano iniziato a chiedere il Green Pass di loro iniziativa.  Qui sono bene attenti a non limitare troppo le liberta’ individuali,  perche’ la Costituzione non lo consente.  Finalmente in questi ultimi giorni e’ stato imposto l’obbligo vaccinale ai sanitari,  si sono chiuse tutte le attivita’ sportive al chiuso,  annullati eventi e addirittura si e’ deciso di vietare l’ingresso nel Paese ai non vaccinati,  ripristinando anche il controllo passaporti alla frontiera.  La campagna vaccinale comunque va molto bene e siamo ampiamente arrivati alle terze dosi.

Gli ultimi dati:  343 pazienti sono ospedalizzati,  di cui 56 in terapia intensiva;  l’incidenza e’ di 542 per 100,000 abitanti.  Deceduti da marzo 2020:  1548.

In Italia le ultime notizie riportano una forte stretta sull’uso del Super green pass,  che assomiglia molto ad un lockdown per non vaccinati su modello austriaco;  per assurdo puo’ essere una buona cosa per loro,  perche’ se e’ vero che anche noi vaccinati possiamo contagiare,  meglio proteggere chi non ha nemmeno un minimo di protezione.

Il settimanale The Economist ha designato l’Italia come “Paese dell’anno”,  facendo riferimento alla nostra ripresa economica.  Grazie del complimento,  ma…sicuri??  Secondo me,  finche’ non risolveremo il problema dell’enorme evasione fiscale e del debito pubblico non saremo affatto un modello.

A Month in my photos.

December was characterized by extreme weather conditions:  at the beginning of the month a sharp arctic cold wave made us feel the chills of -20 degrees C for a few days;  then the wind turned to blow from the south and the thermometer rose above zero by 4/5 degrees,  melting all the little snow that had arrived.  Again from the 20th cold impulses were conveyed from north and we plunged back into intense frost.  Now we are still below zero and there is a pleasant white covering all around.

Obviously when the cold is so intense there is high pressure and therefore the sun shines in the clear blue sky:  in fact we have had very bright days,  in which the reflections of the snow and ice have created diamonds everywhere. 

On December 7th we reviewed the optical phenomenon of the “Halo”,  that is the “sun with the pinnacle”, which is created only when temperature is truly low.  I told you about this phenomenon in my post:  https://traitaliaefinlandia.com/2018/02/27/effetti-ottici-del-freddo/

These are the shortest days of the year:  now at 8 in the morning it starts dawning and before the day is done it is 9.30 / 10,  depending on whether the sky is blue or gray with clouds. 

A fun fact that my Italian friends certainly had not thought of is the very small arc described in the sky by the sun.  Let me explain:  the sun should always rise in the east and set in the west;  this is true up to a certain latitude.  Already in Verona (which is 45 degrees North),  we see that the point from where the sun rises and where it sets is different through the seasons and that the arc of the sun is wider in summer and narrower in winter.  Here the situation is taken to the extreme:  the sun in summer is born in the north-east and sets in the north-west while now it is born and sets in the south.  It follows that the arc in the sky is very narrow and very low.  (Latitude of Somero:  60 degrees North).

The Christmas atmosphere here is captivating:  in every house,  in every garden,  there are picturesque lights (but always with still lights,  not intermittent);  in all public places there are lights in the windows / shop windows,  including banks,  offices,  not just shops.  Furthermore,  when you go out into nature,  everything is silence:  animals do not move,  they stay in the thick of the woods,  moving a little away from their burrows.  Some of course are hibernating.  In this moment you may just hear the Woodpecker’s stubborn hammering or the Bullfinches’ whining voice.

We humans are also tempted to hibernate in these short days.  In summer we sleep much less,  due to the light even at night,  while now we recover.  😉

Risto and I went to Italy this December and we didn’t do anything special,  but we certainly kept my mum company.  When we started the thermometer was -21C and on our return + 5C.

Speaking of this,  I want to tell you what we gave ourselves for Christmas,  an “immaterial” gift:  two Business class tickets on the plane,  to travel comfortably and not have anyone sitting close to us.  Many times we think of a gift as an object,  perhaps superfluous,  but then why not spend the money to give ourselves a comfort?  (After all,  Business class prices are not so different from Economy class if you book well in advance:  it certainly costs less than a new mobile).

We went and returned before the new covid restrictions and it seemed to us to find the blessed normality again.  Now,  however,  with this new variant,  that is practically a new virus,  we are back at war.   However, a more tactful communication from the media as well as from the WHO would be appreciated:  please do not create panic and anxiety – it will not help.

The covid situation in Finland is also worsening and hospitals are preparing extra beds.  Even dedicated covid hospitals are being prepared,  such as the structure located in Paimio,  next to the famous sanatorium designed by archistar Alvar Aalto.  Here,  too,  most patients are unvaccinated:  it is a pity because health workers must overwork and there are delays in assisting other patients.  Not to mention the costs.  When the pandemic burst out everybody was expecting the vaccine as the salvation,  what happened after that?

However,  the Finnish government is still cautious in imposing restrictions (in my opinion too cautious) so much so that some managers of restaurants,  bars and public places have begun to ask for the Vax Pass on their own.  Here they are careful not to restrict individual freedoms too much,  because the Constitution does not allow it.  In recent days at last the vaccination has been imposed on healthcare workers,   all indoor sports activities have been closed,  many social events annulled and an entry ban for non-vaccinated people has been reinstated,  also restoring passport control at the border.  The vaccination campaign is going well and third doses are being given.

The latest data:  343 patients are hospitalized,  of whom 56 in intensive care;  incidence is 542 per 100,000 inhabitants.  Total deaths since March 2020:  1548.

In Italy the latest news reports a strong squeeze on the use of the Vax-pass,  which looks a lot like a lockdown for non-vaccinated people as Austria did;  perhaps it will be good for them,  because if we vaccinated can also infect,  it is better to protect those who do not have even a minimum protection.  

Weekly newspaper The Economist has designated Italy as “Country of the Year”,  because of the economic recovery.  Thanks for the compliment,  but… are you sure ??  In my opinion,  as long as we do not solve the problem of huge tax evasion and public debt we will not be a model at all.
