Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Ottobre e’ stato molto variabile:  ci ha regalato una giusta alternanza di sole e pioggia,  di tempeste di vento e di gelate notturne.  Alla fine ci ha regalato anche la prima spruzzatina di neve.

La prima meta’ del mese e’ stata parecchio soleggiata e gli uccelli migratori se la sono presa comoda:  c’era ancora cibo in giro per i campi ed hanno atteso il vento da nord per allontanarsi.  Fra gli ultimi a partire c’e’ sempre il pettirosso,  che indugia nel nostro giardino piluccando gli ultimi insetti sui gambi delle nostre rose fino a meta’ ottobre,  dopodiche’ fiuta la mala parata e se ne va.

Con mia grande sorpresa a fine mese ho visto ancora un piccolo stormo di Cardellini gironzolare.  Spero che le gelate li abbiano spinti ad andarsene.

Ho fatto molto birdwatching ed ho visto aquile di mare sorvolare,  probabilmente con l’acquolina in bocca,  le aree dove i migratori si fermano a riposare o a mangiare qualcosa prima di intraprendere il viaggio.  Ho visto un rapace duellare in aria con una cornacchia,  forse per una preda consistente o per un’invasione di territorio.

L’unica cosa che non ho visto e’ l’Aurora boreale,  che le app promettevano ma che non si e’ spinta fin qui nel sud del Paese.  Pero’ uscendo la sera per monitorare la situazione Aurora,  ho sentito stormi di Gru dirigersi verso sud chiamandosi a gran voce ed ho visto parecchie stelle cadenti,  dato che il cielo qui e’ sempre terso e pulito,  quando e’ senza nubi.  Proprio ieri sera era prevista una tempesta solare potente,  ma purtroppo qui era tutto nuvolo.

Le giornate si sono accorciate tantissimo,  specialmente adesso col cambio dell’ora i nostri pomeriggi sono davvero brevissimi e le nostre sere sempre piu’ lunghe.  Approfittando del bel tempo ho trascorso molte ore in giardino a rastrellare,  poiche’ complici giornate ventose e le prime gelate,  gli alberi hanno lasciato cadere tutte le loro foglie dorate;  non solo,  anche i pini in autunno lasciano cadere un’incredibile quantita’ di aghi…lo sapevate?  Ma a me piace rastrellare:  e’ un’attivita’ Zen,  che aiuta la meditazione e soprattutto si vede il risultato del proprio lavoro.  Le foglie noi le smaltiamo nella nostra piccola porzione di bosco dietro casa,  ma si possono mettere nel contenitore del compost (e a primavera spargere nell’orto come fertilizzante) oppure portare alle varie isole ecologiche.

In Italia ottobre e’ stato mite,  come da qualche decennio a questa parte,  ma con tempeste e temporali violenti:  e’ di queste ore la formazione di un vero e proprio ciclone sui cieli della Sicilia che ha provocato danni enormi e morti.  Sono arrivate anche le prime nebbie in Val Padana.

L’Italia quest’anno ha avuto un enorme momento di notorieta’ grazie alle vittorie sportive,  ma voglio ricordare che un nostro scienziato ha vinto il Nobel per la fisica.  Congratulazioni al dottor Parisi!

Le notizie che mi giungono da Verona sono di una ripresa di moltissime attivita’:  il quartiere fieristico (che fino all’estate era un centro vaccinale),  ha ripreso le sue funzioni e fra i primi eventi la fiera del marmo Marmomacc,  che e’ importantissima.  Altrettanto importante e vivace la fiera del vino Vinitaly,  sospesa dolorosamente a marzo 2020,  che ha registrato oltre 12.000 visitatori e il 22% dall’estero.  Sono molto felice che la situazione si stia normalizzando,  anche perche’ la nostra prossima visita laggiu’ si avvicina.

Naturalmente a tutti gli eventi si partecipa col Green Pass,  neanche a dirlo.  Anche la Finlandia ha approvato il Green Pass,  che fino a qualche settimana fa non esisteva e lo ha reso operativo nelle zone dove c’e’ ancora qualche restrizione perche’ i casi sono piu’ numerosi.  Se questo e’ l’unico modo per salvaguardare la propria e l’altrui salute,  ben venga.  La decisione del governo finlandese e’ motivata dal fatto che con tutte le aperture fatte i contagi sono risaliti parecchio:  adesso siamo a 137 contagi per 100mila abitanti (in Italia siamo sotto i 50).  Arriveremo anche qui al Green Pass sui luoghi di lavoro come gia’ stanno facendo Italia e Austria?  Lo concederanno solo ai vaccinati e non anche ai tamponati come sta facendo la Lituania?  Staremo a vedere e soprattutto facciamocene una ragione.

Altro aspetto positivo di questo ottobre e’ stata una notevole ripresa anche del traffico aereo dall’aeroporto di Helsinki.  Sapete bene che il trasporto aereo e’ il mio campo di lavoro,  per cui ne parlo sempre volentieri.  Abbiamo letto sul giornale che prima della pandemia i voli giornalieri dal HEL erano circa 600,  mentre adesso siamo a 200-300.

A Month in my Photos.

October was rather pleasant:  it bestowed the right alternation of sun and rain,  wind storms and night frosts.  In the end even the first sprinkle of snow.  The first half of the month was quite sunny and the migratory birds took it easy:  there was still food around the fields and they waited for the north wind to get away.  Among the last to leave there is always the Robin,  which lingers in our garden picking up the last insects on the stems of our roses until the middle of October,  after which it smells the bad situation and goes away.

To my surprise at the end of the month I saw a small flock of Goldfinches still wandering around,  as you can see in my shot above.  I hope the frosts have prompted them to leave.

I did a lot of birdwatching and saw sea eagles overfly the areas where migrants stop to rest or eat something before the journey,  probably with their mouth watering.  I saw some bird of prey duel in the air with a crow,  perhaps because of a consistent prey or  an invasion of territory.  The only thing I have not seen is the Northern Lights,  which the apps promised but which did not go so far as the south of the country.  However,  when I went out in the evening to monitor the Aurora situation,  I heard flocks of Cranes heading south calling each other loudly and I saw several shooting stars,  since the sky here is always clear and clean,  when cloudless.  Yesterday night a powerful Northern lights show was expected,  but unfortunately the sky was overcast here.

The days have shortened a lot,  especially now with the change to wintertime our afternoons are really short and our evenings are getting longer and longer.  Taking advantage of the good weather,  I spent many hours in the garden raking,  as the trees have dropped all their golden leaves thanks to windy days and the first frosts;  moreover,  even pines in autumn drop an incredible amount of needles … did you know?  But I like to rake:  it is a Zen activity which helps meditation and above all you can see the result of your work.  Here we dispose of the leaves in our portion of woodland behind our house,  but we could put them into the compost container too or carry them to the public waste collecting spots.

In Italy October was mild,  as for some decades now,  but with violent storms and thunderstorms,  which unfortunately still take by surprise those territories that are not respected by man with his buildings.  The first fogs have also arrived in the Po Valley. 

This year Italy has celebrated a lot of sporting victories,  but I would like to celebrate one of our scientists who won the Nobel Prize in physics:  dr. Giorgio Parisi.  Congratulations!

The news that reaches me from Verona is of a resumption of many activities:  the exhibition center (which until the summer was a vaccination center),  has resumed its functions and among the first events was the Marmomacc marble fair,  which is very important.  Equally important and lively is the Vinitaly wine fair,  (painfully suspended in March 2020),  where 12,000 people visited,  of which 22% from abroad.  I am very happy that the situation is getting easier,  also because our next visit over there is approaching.

Of course all events are attended with the Vaccine Pass,  needless to say.  Finland also approved the Vax Pass,  which until a few weeks ago did not exist and made it effective in areas where there are still some restrictions because cases are more numerous.  If this is the only way to safeguard one’s own health and that of others,  so be it.  The decision of the Finnish government is motivated by the fact that with all the openings made,  the infections have risen a lot:  now we have 137 per every 100,000 inhabitants (in Italy below 50).  Will the Vax Pass be compulsory here also in workplaces as Italy and Austria are already doing?  Will it be released only to vaccinated people and not just on a test basis?  We’ll see and above all let’s accept it.

Another positive aspect of this October was a notable recovery also in air traffic from Helsinki airport.  You know that air transport is my field of work,  so I willingly mention it.  We read in the newspaper that before the pandemic daily flights from HEL were about 600,  while now about 200-300.
