Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Se Agosto e’ il mese in cui qui al nord mettiamo un piede dentro l’autunno,  Settembre e’ il mese in cui accendiamo pure i riscaldamenti e i caminetti.Questo Settembre e’ stato molto bello in Finlandia:  poche piogge (anche troppo poche) e molte giornate piu’ o meno soleggiate,  che ci hanno permesso di godere dei meravigliosi colori del foliage,  di qualche biciclettata,  di qualche gita,  di qualche caffe’ all’aperto.  Il panorama e’ adesso completamente dorato:  le betulle e tutti gli altri alberi decidui sfoggiano livree gialle che brillano particolarmente sotto i raggi del mesto sole ottobrino.

La scadenza piu’ importante in questo periodo riguarda il giardinaggio:  per chi ama essere circondato da fiori e piante,  adesso c’e’ da lavorare;  bisogna dismettere le fioriere estive,  spargere il fertilizzante autunnale,  rastrellare…perche’ quelle belle foglie colorate presto saranno tutte per terra.

Le giornate si sono vistosamente accorciate;  dopo l’equinozio in cui in tutto il mondo di’ e notte avevano la stessa durata,  ora qui la notte a poco a poco prende il sopravvento.  Al momento alle 20.00 e’ decisamente buio.

Gli uccelli migratori se la sono squagliata quasi tutti:  rimane il Pettirosso,  qualche stormo di Gru e i Cigni ostinati che non partiranno se non quando il ghiaccio dei laghi gli tocchera’ il culetto.  Gli Zigoli invece   decideranno come sempre di non partire affatto e verranno da noi in cerca di semi di avena.  Dimenticavo:  anche i merli rimangono in gran numero…rovistando nelle nostre aiuole in cerca di vermiciattoli.

Noi siamo stati in Italia per le nostre vacanze ed e’ stato molto rilassante:  abbiamo avuto 30 gradi di giorno e 15 di notte,  senza l’afa estiva.  Settembre e’ proprio il momento migliore per una vacanza (almeno nell’Italia del nord):  consiglio a tutti i miei lettori scandinavi di tener presente questo mese se volete venire – potrete prolungare piacevolmente la vostra estate.

Questa era la nostra terza volta quest’estate e finalmente abbiamo avuto la gioia di vedere un bel po’ di attivita’ in piu’ sia all’aeroporto di Helsinki,  sia a Francoforte.  A Helsinki finalmente e’ stato riaperto il Terminal 1,  dopo un interminabile anno e mezzo.  Fra l’altro l’aeroporto sta facendo dei lavori di allargamento:  non potevano scegliere periodo migliore per non creare troppi disagi ai passeggeri.

In Italia abbiamo avuto l’impressione di un ritorno alla vita normale.  A parte l’uso della mascherina all’interno,  tutto sembrava come nel pre-covid:  le localita’ turistiche pienissime di gente (tedeschi,  danesi,  olandesi…),  i ristoranti,  i bar,  i centri commerciali.  Insomma,  la prova provata che i vaccini funzionano:  con tutte queste aperture se non fossimo vaccinati ci sarebbero gli ospedali pieni!

Per fortuna la stragrande maggioranza degli italiani si e’ vaccinata (il 71% con doppia dose) e cosi’ credo dei turisti stranieri.  In Finlandia abbiamo circa il 69%.

La novita’ che abbiamo trovato in Italia e’ rappresentata dal fatto che e’ stato imposto il Green Pass per accedere a moltissime manifestazioni/luoghi/locali/attivita’.  Qui non e’ cosi’,  qui il pass vaccinale non e’ richiesto,  non e’ ovviamente obbligatorio il vaccino e la mascherina e’ sempre solo stata “raccomandata”,  dopo il primo lockdown.  Ma qui abbiamo avuto “solo” poco piu’ di 1200 morti in tutto e abbiamo avuto “solo” 800 casi giornalieri nel massimo delle varie ondate,  per cui non siamo in emergenza e la situazione e’ stata sempre sotto controllo.  In realta’ i finlandesi hanno adottato comportamenti cauti sempre (ad esempio portando la mascherina che copra bene anche il naso!) e solo adesso stanno “sbracando”,  perche’ sono arcistufi,  come tutti.  Ci sono anche qui i no-vax e hanno fatto le loro colorate manifestazioni,  ma sono una sparuta minoranza e soprattutto non sono violenti.

Dalla prossima settimana le raccomandazioni sull’uso della mascherina sono state ridotte  e cessera’ il report sul numero di casi quotidiani di covid sui media,  anche questo e’ un piccolo segno di ritorno alla normalita’,  forse.

Il Paese ideale per i no-vax e’ invece la Svezia,  che non ha chiuso pressoche’ nulla per legge,  limitandosi a raccomandazioni,  e che adesso ha gia’ riaperto tutto e la popolazione sta gia’ festeggiando per le vie di Stoccolma.  Ma anche la’ le raccomandazioni sono state seguite e adesso un’altissima percentuale di gente e’ gia’ vaccinata:  il 63%.  Comunque,  giusto per fare un confronto,  la Svezia ha avuto oltre 14.000 morti su una popolazione di 10 milioni.

Chi chiede con forza un allentamento delle ultime restrizioni ed un ritorno alla normalita’ e’ invece la regione Lapponia,  che ha bisogno di riaprire il piu’ possibile al turismo;  gli hotel-bungalows dai quali vedere l’aurora boreale,  il villaggio del Babbo con i suoi figuranti,  gli allevamenti di husky per fare le gite in slitta,  le guide che portano i turisti a fare safari in motoslitta…tutti hanno bisogno di tornare a lavorare.

Il governo e gli scienziati pero’ stanno studiando una procedura da mettere in atto in occasione di una prossima epidemia/pandemia/variante,  perche’ purtroppo possiamo aspettarcela e lo vediamo da come trattiamo il nostro ambiente naturale o dall’azzardo con cui trattiamo i virus nei laboratori…

Attenzione:  il Green Pass ci e’ stato richiesto alla frontiera al momento del nostro rientro in Finlandia.  Naturalmente e’ richiesto dalle Compagnie Aeree per poter volare…ergo:  se ti vuoi muovere,  lo devi avere.

A Month in my Photos.

If August is the month in which here in the north we take one step into autumn,  September is the month in which we also turn on the heaters and fireplaces.

This September was very beautiful in Finland:  few rains (even too few) and many more or less sunny days,  which allowed us to enjoy the wonderful colors of the foliage,  a few bike rides,  a few trips.  The landscape is now truly golden:  the birches and all the other deciduous trees show off yellow liveries that shine particularly under the rays of the mild October sun.

The most important thing expecting you in this period is gardening:  for those who love to be surrounded by flowers and plants,  now there is work to be done;  you have to dispose of the summer planters,  spread the autumn fertilizer,  rake … because all those beautiful colored leaves will soon all be on the ground. 

The days have dramatically shortened;  after the equinox when day and night had the same duration all over the world,  now here the night gradually takes over.  At the moment at 8,00 p.m. it is very dark.

Almost all of the migratory birds are gone:  the robin remains,  a few flocks of cranes and the stubborn swans that will not leave until they feel the ice of the lakes beneath their ass.  The Yellowhammers instead will decide as always not to leave at all and will come to us in search of oat seeds. By the way:  Blackbirds will also stay in great numbers.  They will scratch the grass in our garden to search for worms.

We went to Italy for our holidays and it was very relaxing:  we had 30 degrees during the day and 15 at night,  without the summer sticky heat.  September is the best time for a vacation (at least in northern Italy):  I recommend to all my Scandinavian readers to keep this month in mind if you want to come – you can pleasantly extend your summer.

This was our third time this summer and we finally had the joy of seeing a lot more activity at both Helsinki Airport and Frankfurt.  Terminal 1 has finally reopened in Helsinki,  after an interminable year and a half.  Among other things,  the airport is undergoing enlargement works:  they couldn’t choose the best time to avoid creating too many inconveniences for passengers.

In Italy we had the impression of a return to normal life.  Apart from the use of face masks inside places, everything seemed like in the pre-covid:  tourist places were full of people (Germans, Danes, Dutch …),  restaurants,  bars,  shopping centers.  In short:  the proof that vaccines work;  with all these openings,  if we weren’t vaccinated,  the hospitals would be full!

Fortunately,  the vast majority of Italians got vaccinated (71% with a double dose) and so I think of foreign tourists.  In Finland we have around 69%.

The new rule that we found in Italy is that the Vaccination Pass has been imposed to access many events/places/clubs/activities.  Here it is not so.  Here the vaccination pass is not required,  the vaccine is obviously not mandatory and masks have always just been “recommended”,  after the first lockdown.  But here we have had “only” a little more than 1200 deaths in total and we have had “only” 800 daily cases in the maximum of the various waves,  so we are not in an emergency and the situation has been under control all the time.  For sure Finns have always adopted cautious behaviors (for example wearing a mask that covers the nose well!) and only now they are “slouching off”,  because they are bored,  like everyone else.  There are also anti-vax of course and they have had their colorful demonstrations,  but they are a small non-violent minority.

Starting from next week,  recommendations regarding the use of face masks will be reduced and no more update on the number of daily cases on the media,  here in Finland.  This is also a little step towards normality,  at last.

The ideal country for anti-vax is actually Sweden,  which has closed almost nothing by law,  (giving just recommendations),  which has already reopened everything and the population is already celebrating in the streets of Stockholm.  But even there the recommendations were followed and now a very high percentage of people are already vaccinated:  63%.  However,  just for comparison,  Sweden has had over 14,000 deaths out of a population of 10 million.

The Lapland region,  on the other hand,  is calling for an easing of the latest restrictions and a return to normal life,  to be able to reopen as much as possible to tourism;  the hotel-bungalows from which to watch the Northern Lights,  the Santa’s village with its “elves”,  the husky farms for sleigh rides,  the guides who take tourists on snowmobile safaris … everyone needs go back to work.

However,  the government and scientists are studying a procedure to be implemented in the event of an upcoming epidemic/pandemic/variant,  because we know that we can expect it:  consider how we treat our natural environment or how we deal with viruses in laboratories…

The Vaccination Pass was requested from us at the time of our return to Finland anyway.  Of course it is required by all Airlines to be able to fly… therefore if you want to travel, you must have it.
