Cari lettori,  oggi vi faccio conoscere un volatile di cui sicuramente pochi di voi hanno sentito parlare:  il Falco pecchiaiolo  (Pernis apivorus).

Si tratta di un rapace molto particolare:  non lo si vede in volo alto circuitare silenziosamente in cerca di prede come fanno gli altri falchi,  perche’ caccia solo da posatoi bassi,  infatti il suo cibo consiste esclusivamente in larve e nidi di varie specie di api e vespe.  Questa sua specializzazione si puo’ evincere chiaramente anche dalla conformazione del suo becco e della sua testa:  sono molto piu’ sottili e slanciati,  appunto perche’ non servono a dilaniare carne.

Questo falco con queste caratteristiche di unicita’ e’ diffuso sia in Finlandia sia nelle zone montane in Italia.  In inverno migra verso l’Africa e,  spiace dirlo,  e’ un facile bersaglio per i cacciatori.

DSCN7123DSCN7119DSCN7110DSCN7121DSCN7108Le foto di questa meravigliosa creatura vengono dal bioparco di Ranua,  ancora una volta,  ma ho visto e fotografato io stessa un esemplare di Falco pecchiaiolo posato sul ramo di un albero vicino a casa.  Postero’ queste foto in futuro.

Il titolo del post deriva dal nome anglosassone di questo bel volatile:  the Honey Buzzard.

The Honey Buzzard.

Dear readers,  today I am introducing you to a bird that almost certainly few of you have heard of:  the Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus).

It is a very particular raptor:  it is not seen in high flight silently soaring in search of preys as other hawks do,  because it hunts only from low perches,  in fact its food consists exclusively of larvae and nests of various species of bees and wasps.  This specialization can also be clearly deduced from the conformation of its beak and its head:  they are much thinner and more slender,  precisely because they do not serve to tear flesh. 

This hawk with these characteristics of uniqueness is widespread both in Finland and in mountainous areas in Italy.  In winter it migrates to Africa and,  sorry to say,  it is an easy target for hunters.

The photos of this wonderful creature come from the Ranua wildlife park once again,  but I have seen and photographed myself a specimen of Honey buzzard resting on the branch of a tree not far from my home.  I will post these photos in the future.
