Buona domenica a tutti,  cari lettori!

Continuando sul tema della FORTUNA,  oggi vi propongo testo e musica del brano  “O Fortuna”,  il piu’noto dei Carmina Burana,  poemi medievali messi in musica da Carl Orff.

O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
mihi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

La Fortuna e’ descritta come volubile,  ma anche nascosta;  “vano benessere” e “condizione passeggera”;  si dice che essa crei il potere,  ma lo sappia anche dissolvere come ghiaccio.  Saggezza da tenere sempre presente.

Nella mia foto:  un pesciolino che ha avuto la fortuna avversa.

Continuing the series of posts dedicated to GOOD FORTUNE,  today I would like to share a part of the text and music of the most famous of the Carmina Burana chants.  This medieval collection of poems was set to music by Carl Orff.

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing,
ever waning,
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice
fate – monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy

Fortune is described as changeable,  but also hidden;  “vain well-being” and “temporary condition”;  it is said to create power,  but it also knows how to dissolve it like ice.  A piece of wisdom to always keep in mind.

  5. Ricordo anche io i brividi, guardando lo spettacolo di Carmina Burana davanti al monumento impressionante Völkerschlachtdenkmal di Lipsia. Una notte d’estate, torce e tutto … Grazie per risvegliare il ricordo!

  25. Tendenzialmente non sono uno che crede troppo ai concetti di fortuna e sfortuna, ma è indubbio che la casualità possa giocare un ruolo molto importante in molte situazioni, da quelle minimali a quelle più importanti della nostra vita.
    Ma io – è sottilissima la differenza – credo più che sia “caso” e non “fortuna”, perché il concetto di fortuna/sfortuna è quello che noi associamo all’evento, e ciò che per me può essere fortuna, per un altro potrebbe essere sfortuna, ma l’evento rimane inalterato.
    (non so se sono riuscito a spiegarmi)

  30. Bella cittadina! Ho abitato a Lipsia per 6 anni. Se non conosci ancora Dresda, la Firenze dell’Elba, che è un must in Germania, da lì fai una gita in giornata a Lipsia. Ciao e buona serata!
