Cari amici,  oggi vi parlo di una tradizione nordica che si interseca chiaramente con una nostra,  mediterranea,  che conosciamo bene:  la presenza in cielo di una vecchina (per lo più strega) che se ne vola a bordo di una scopa.

Nell’immaginario popolare più vicino a noi,  si chiama Befana e solca i cieli la notte del 6 gennaio per portare doni ai bimbi meritevoli o carbone a quelli cattivi per dar loro una lezione.  Nella tradizione finlandese (originata al tempo in cui la Finlandia era parte della Svezia) si chiama Pääsiäisnoita e si attiva la notte del giovedì santo,  è accompagnata da un gatto e non può mancarle il bricco del caffè a bordo della scopa.  Non porta regali, però. Anche se va detto che oggigiorno in Finlandia il mito della Strega di Pasqua è quasi del tutto dimenticato,  mentre in Italia è ancora molto vivo.

Vi lascio con una considerazione:  la mia nonna paterna,  veronese purosangue,  soleva chiamare tradizionalmente il giorno dell’Epifania anche:  Pasquetta,  nel senso di giorno strettamente legato alla Pasqua,  precursore della Pasqua,  dopotutto la più importante festività successiva al Natale appena trascorso.  Nessuna meraviglia quindi che la Befana da noi voli a Pasquetta e in Finlandia a Pasqua!  Incredibile quanto certi miti avvicinino le civiltà e i Paesi apparentemente lontani.

The Easter Witch.

Dear readers,  today I’d like to share with you a Scandinavian tradition which matches exactly with something we know very well in Italy:  an elderly lady (namely a witch) flying across the sky sitting on a broom.

In the Italian popular imagination, it is called Befana and it crosses the skies on the night of January 6th to bring gifts to deserving children or coal to bad ones to teach them a lesson. In the Finnish tradition (originated at the time when Finland was part of Sweden) it is called Pääsiäisnoita and is activated on the night of Holy Thursday.  She is accompanied by a cat and she cannot miss the pot of coffee on board the broom. She does not deliver presents. Although it must be said that today in Finland the myth of the Easter Witch is almost completely forgotten, while in Italy it is still very much alive.

A fun fact for you:  my paternal grandmother,  a thoroughbred Veronese,  used to traditionally call the day of the Epiphany also:   Little Easter,  in the sense of a day closely linked to Easter,  precursor of Easter – after all the most important holiday after Christmas just passed.  No wonder thus that the Befana flies to Italy on Little Easter and to Finland at Easter!  It is incredible how much certain myths bring civilizations and apparently distant countries closer.

    Scherzi a parte, grazie per la condivisione, non immaginavo proprio una similitudine del genere.
    Alla fine le tradizioni hanno tutte radici comuni.

  37. Great and interesting story about the Finnish and Italian traditions for All Seasons! Have not heard about friendly witches, except for in children’s stories. I grew up with the story that witches were evil because they spoke out curses and served satan, the enemy of God.
    Yes, I had the most peaceful Easter, because here, it was at the point of raining and windy all day. Since the service we were planning to go, would be outside for Easter, (but because of the weather) we stayed home. After Easter it warmed up quite a bit, and wear short sleeve tops:) Hope you had a chance to rest at Easter from your busy job:) Have a lovely week, Jesh

  39. Buongiorno cara e grazie per la domanda. Abbiamo i puntini perche’ in compenso non abbiamo accenti (e nemmeno apostrofi). E’ un modo diverso di scrivere i suoni. La Ä si pronuncia leggermente diversa dalla A, come in italiano la E suona diversamente dalla E’. Buonissima giornata a te!

  42. Non conoscevo questa tradizione, forse per il fatto che non porta regali. Tuttavia le festività sono sempre un momento piacevole da trascorrere in famiglia o, nel caso in cui ci sia il “liberi tutti” come accade a casa mia a Pasqua, come meglio si crede.
