Bellino ma anche bruttino.

L’Ibis sacro (Threskiornis aethiopicus) e’ un volatile tipico delle pianure e dei fiumi africani.  Spesso lo si identifica con l’Egitto e con il fiume Nilo,  anche perche’ come quest’ultimo rappresentava una divinita’ nella religione panteistica dell’antica civilta’ egizia:  nella fattispecie  il dio Thoth.

Oggi,  grazie agli evidenti cambiamenti climatici in corso,  e’ possibile vedere uno o piu’ ibis sacri anche nei dintorni di Verona,  nel nord Italia.  Io lo vedo spesso nelle mie passeggiate a Villa Canossa.  Se non lo conoscete, ve ne propongo la camminata aggraziata,  nonostante le zampe infangate.

Ho voluto intitolare questo post “Bellino ma anche bruttino” perche’ nonostante lo splendido piumaggio trovo che testa e becco di questo animale non siano cosi’ aggraziati.

Ugly but handsome.

The  African sacred ibis  (Threskiornis aethiopicus)   is a bird native to Africa who breeds especially in the sub-Saharian areas.  We often associate the sacred ibis with Egypt and the Nile river,  perhaps because it represented a deity in the Ancient Egyptians’ pagan religion,  as well as the river Nile itself.   Namely,  the god Thoth.

This bird has been unfamiliar to western Europe for centuries,  but nowadays it is possible to view one or more ibises even close to Verona,  in the north of Italy,  thanks to the evident climate changes.  I happen to see it in my walks around Villa Canossa.  In the brief video,  you can appreciate its graceful parade,  in spite of the mud in its feet.

I chose to name this post “Ugly but handsome” because in my opinion the head and bill of this bird are not at all attractive, although its body and feathers are incredibly beautiful.

  13. Visto innumerevoli volte proprio in testi di Egittologia e su molti monumenti, da Luxor ad Assuan. Animale sacro simbolo del dio Thor che speso aveva come testa quella dell’Ibis. Divinità della scienza e conoscenza, della scrittura. Figura chiave e molto antica nel pantheon egizio

  24. pur non essendo bellissimo è sempre una meraviglia osservare animali in libertà, danno gioia all’anima e in qualche modo ci fanno distrarre dai troppi problemi del giorno d’oggi.

  26. What a privilege to see this wonderful bird walking in the fields of the Verona area! I like the shape of the head and the beak must have a purpose to do with getting and consuming food. You can identify birds from their shape. Have a good week!

In effetti il titolo del post riassume perfettamente le caratteristiche che contraddistinguono l’ibis sacro: splendido piumaggio ma la testa e il becco… Ma in fondo sono proprio questi gli elementi che ci permettono di riconoscerlo tra altri uccelli magari meno eleganti ma con una testa più aggraziata. Vero?
